They are half as likely to experience long-term unemployment compared with those who have not studied or trained abroad and, five years after graduation, their unemployment rate is 23% lower. The study, compiled by independent experts, is the largest of its kind and received feedback from nearly 80 000 respondents including students and businesses.

Book excerpt: College is designed to prepare students for the workforce, yet students are studying abroad each year without significant research to demonstrate how study abroad impacts their future employment outlook. This study aimed to discover the ways in which college graduates’ experiences studying abroad shaped the way they thought about future employment in terms of social, environmental, or economical influence. Participants where alumni of Fairleigh Dickinson University and had studied abroad either short- or long-term during their undergraduate careers and were employed full-time at the time of the interview. Data from the interviews was evaluated and categorized in order to address the research question and to highlight commonalities in participant responses. The findings included three themes, two of which addressed the research question and one emerged from participant responses. The themes included future employment outlook, social, environmental, and/or economic influence, and skills learned. This study demonstrates additional benefits that studying abroad can provide students. Schools could use these findings to design study abroad programs that allow students to gain professional and personal skills that they can use to focus on their future employment opportunities. This study can be built upon by widening the participant sample and by measuring students’ skills and perceptions before and after participating in a study abroad program.

This figure represents an increase of 2.7% of U.S. students studying abroad from the previous year. Research shows that education abroad provides students with opportunities not only to see the world but also to develop intercultural competence, which is increasingly crucial in the 21st century workplace. There are also numerous studies that show gains in autonomy, confidence, and tolerance for ambiguity in students who complete some type of study abroad experience. In sum, the education abroad experience in itself represents a powerful learning environment that continues to support personal and professional development long after returning home. Nonetheless, these learning environments must be cultivated along with faculty who develop and lead programs, as well as university partners and providers. Furthermore, education abroad programming and assessment is complex and must take into consideration many factors including academic goals, purposeful curricular development, and a balance between academics and leisure activities on site. This book explores the many aspects of education abroad as a learning environment, such as student learning outcomes, faculty development, and program assessment and evaluation. In addition, several chapters present education abroad experiences as a model for community engagement and activism. The authors represent a diverse range of institutions and perspectives and discuss programs around the globe. The book represents the voices of faculty that lead education abroad programs, students who participate in them, and also those of international students on a U.S. campus reflecting on their personal experiences abroad. Furthermore, this book contributes to the discussion of best practices to assist faculty and program directors in creating robust education abroad programs that meet the needs of their students and institutions.

Book excerpt: The number of students from the United States who study abroad as part of their curriculum and the number of study abroad programs for students have been steadily increasing over the past 50 years. A review of literature in this area shows that little significant research addressed the effects of studying abroad upon students' openness to diversity. Further, most studies that have purported to measure study abroad outcomes have failed to use scientifically rigorous methods. This dissertation reports a quantitative study to determine what specific developmental outcome-in terms of openness to diversity-results from students at The Pennsylvania State University participating in an international education program or study outside the United States. The researcher compares measured results with those from a comparison group of students who remained in the United States.
