Book excerpt: Urbanization is known to change the hydrologic and sediment supply regimes of rivers, causing more frequent, flashier flood events (hydromodification) and a reduction and redistribution of sediment sources. Presently, the impact that these changes have on bedload transport in gravel-bed channels and the resulting impact on bed morphology remains largely unknown due to a lack of process based studies. A better understanding of how riverbed form and processes evolve with urbanization is critical as they are a primary factor in controlling stream stability, providing habitat for aquatic species and influencing flood elevations. Additionally, stream rehabilitation is becoming increasingly common in urban rivers and an understanding of how sediment transport dynamics change with the alterations common to urbanization is critical for a successful design. This thesis explores the impact of urbanization, which is the combination of hydromodification and alterations to sediment supply, on the morphodynamics (linkages between channel form and process) of bedforms in gravel-bed rivers. Specific objectives are: 1) to determine if detectable differences in bed morphology exist between rural and urban rivers in the same hydrophysiographic region; 2) to characterize the sediment transport dynamics of a highly urbanized channel; 3) to investigate the differences in geomorphically significant flows and sediment transport characteristics for different levels of watershed urbanization; and 4) to generalize field specific results using a mobile-bed laboratory flume to investigate the sediment transport characteristics for different levels of watershed hydromodification. Longitudinal profiles of 11 rural and 9 urban watercourses with pool-riffle dominated morphologies in the same hydrophysiographic region (Southern Ontario, Canada) were investigated using three objective bedform identification methods; zero-crossing analysis, bedform differencing technique and residual pool depth analysis, as well as visual field identification. Results indicate that urban rivers possess deeper pools and a more topographically variable bed. A field investigation was undertaken to characterize event-based sediment transport dynamics of a highly urbanized gravel-bed river over a three year period. Mimico Creek, located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is nearly fully urbanized and lacks significant stormwater management controls, therefore making it a representative study reach. Bedload transport was measured using both active and passive sampling methods to characterize the mobility and transport dynamics of the entire range of surface particles. During this time, over 10 floods were sampled ranging from the approximate threshold discharge to well over the bankfull discharge. Coarse particle mobility differed from that previously reported in literature for rivers with more natural flow regimes. A strong link was found between coarse particle mobility and the transport dynamics of finer material which tends to dominate the bedload. The measured bedload transport data were also used to calibrate a fractional sediment transport model which was combined with hydrometric data corresponding to different levels of watershed urbanization to perform a geomorphic work analysis. Urbanization is increasing the frequency, volume and time of competent discharge events (capable of performing work on the channel). Greater increases of intermediate discharge events were observed. Less urban streams are more influenced by larger discharge events, while urbanization is shifting the geomorphic significance to lower (but still competent) discharges. Inspired from the field observations, an unsteady flow laboratory experiment was conducted to provide more generalized results. Three land-use scenarios representing different levels of watershed urbanization were developed from measured hydrometric data. Results show that both unsteady bedload transport dynamics and resulting bed morphology change with different levels of urbanization. Shorter duration hydrographs (corresponding to urban conditions) possess higher transport rates, less pronounced bedload hysteresis loops and more topographic variability of the bed. A proposed parameter for evaluating the degree of hysteresis shows sediment transport is closely linked with falling limb dynamics. The key conclusion from the field, modeling and laboratory studies is that bedforms in gravel-bed rivers appear to be evolving to a state with more topographic variability. This variability is hypothesized to be additional form roughness to dissipate energy introduced due to hydromodification. These results are unique in literature and further our understanding of urban river processes.

This change in hydrologic conditions in combination with alterations to the sediment supply regime in urban watersheds leads to adjustments to channel form and the widespread degradation of urban rivers. Urban river management increasingly attempts to balance the societal needs of flood and erosion control, while simultaneously improving the ecological health or waterways. Two common types of river management include stormwater management (SWM), which focuses on the attenuation of urban floods, and in-stream restoration, which attempts to reconstruct stable and ecologically favourable channels. However, current urban river management designs lack consideration of the key process responsible for channel stability and habitat availability: bedload sediment transport. Two reasons for this shortcoming are the lack of bedload sediment data in urban watersheds and the consequent gap in understanding of the bedload transport dynamics of urban rivers. Consequently, the degradation of urban rivers persists. This project investigates bedload transport dynamics in urban rivers with different management scenarios to focus on four themes: (1) how urbanization affects bedload transport dynamics and its relationship to channel morphology, (2) how to best predict bedload transport dynamics in urban rivers, (3) how current urban river management strategies change the transport dynamics of rivers, and (4) how to improve bedload sediment monitoring technology. This project focuses on the grain-scale bedload transport dynamics of coarse material because it links to the morphodynamics and ecological processes of channels, it provides insights on the exact controls and spatial variability of bedload transport, and the responses to individual flood events can be directly measured. The overarching goal of this study is to contribute to improved urban river management strategies that focus on adaptive management and interdisciplinary approaches. Bedload sediment transport was monitored using RFID tracer stones in three streams with different hydrologic settings: rural, urban with no SWM, and urban with SWM. High-resolution water level data confirmed the hydrologic differences expected from the three watershed conditions, as well as channel enlargement characteristic of urban rivers. Results demonstrate that the morphologic differences between the study streams can be linked to changes in the grain-scale bedload transport dynamics of the streams. Bedload transport is accelerated in the urban stream due to an increase in the frequency of bedload mobilization, particularly of coarse sediment sizes. In contrast, SWM hasdecreased the bedload transport to an immobile and armoured state indicative of a competence-limit transport regime. Results are used to make recommendations for improved urban river management. Results from the bedload tracking were used to build predictive models of tracer displacements. A new variable that captures both the mobility and travel length of bed particles is introduced. Several flow metrics developed in the literature in rural and laboratory settings are calculated, and their ability to predict tracer displacements in the three streams is tested. Scaling tracer travel lengths by mean channel width collapses the data into a single, strong relationship with cumulative energy expenditure, providing a single model that can be used across systems with different watershed conditions. To assess the impact of an in-stream riffle-pool channel reconstruction on bedload sediment dynamics, bedload transport and morphologic change was monitored in adjacent unrestored and restored reaches of an urban channel. Results reveal that the restored reach is stable and self- maintaining, mirroring bedform maintenance processes in natural riffle-pool streams. However, the construction is more successful at slowing down the transport of coarse sediment more than fine sediment, leading to a coarse sediment discontinuity that may be contributing to accelerated channel adjustment beyond the limits of the constructed riffle-pool sequences. This project highlights the importance of considering the entire channel corridor when designing and monitoring restoration projects. A large limitation of bedload sediment tracking technology is the inability to determine the vertical position of tracers, which hinders the ability to study vertical mixing and translate tracer data into bedload transport rates. A new Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) bedload tracer stone is presented, along with results of laboratory performance tests. This new bedload tracer improves upon existing bedload sediment monitoring technology by providing the ability to measure the burial depth of tracers without disturbing the bed. An important contribution of this study is the extensive dataset of bedload transport collected in urban rivers. This study attempts to move away from descriptive differences in the characteristics of urban rivers compared to rural streams, and towards a process-level understanding of the anthropogenic effects on river systems. Grain-scale bedload transport theory, developed in rural and laboratory settings, is applied to urban settings to gain insights into the effects of urbanization and common river management strategies on the geomorphic processes of urban rivers. Recommendations for improved urban river management are developed from the results of this thesis.

Book excerpt: Large particles can be deposited in natural stream channels as a result of failed erosion protection measures or geological deposits. The impacts these large particles have on the natural systems have been studied, however the previous literature that has been completed either has a very narrow scope applicable only to alpine rivers or are simplified and do not fully capture the processes that occur in a natural channel system. Additionally, the results often contradict each other, and give an unclear understanding of the effects these large particles have on bed morphology and sediment transport. This thesis utilizes a laboratory experiment to evaluate the effects that varying densities of large immobile particles in a gravel-bed channel have on sediment transport and bed morphology. The objective of this study is to gain further understanding and to consolidate existing literature to provide a more holistic overview of the effects of these large particles on a channel bed. It was expected that large immobile particles would cause an increase in channel roughness, and that the impacts to sediment transport and bed morphology would reflect this. The laboratory experiment consisted of 5 test cases with varying densities of large immobile particles, and one base case with no large particles present. In each case, the flume bed was composed of a poorly sorted gravel mixture with a bi-modal distribution of sand and gravel meant to be representative of a natural gravel-bed channel. The large particles were sized to be representative of common engineering principles by applying a factor of safety to a minimum stable particle size. Each experimental case consisted of a single hydrograph with continuous sediment input scaled to the flow rate. The results of the test cases and the base case proved that relating the large particle density to an increase in channel roughness was too simplistic to explain the trends found within this study. At low densities of large immobile particles, the transported material and the bed material both became coarser. At medium densities of large immobile particles, the bed material size and erosion reached a maximum, and the system also approached equal mobility. Finally, at high densities of large immobile particles, the size of transported material and bed material sizes were similar to that of the base case, and the sediment transport also had the strongest clockwise hysteresis trend. These results indicate the difficult of relating large immobile particle density to channel roughness to explain the effects on sediment transport and bed morphology. In an effort to provide a more holistic explanation, and to consolidate the existing literature, a more complex explanation was developed using the findings of previous research and relating it to the results found within this study. This complex model is made up of 3 main points: 1. Isolated large immobile particles create localized areas of increased erosive forces, and localized protected areas (Brayshaw et al., 1983). 2. At a narrow range of large immobile particle spacings, flow structures build upon each other and amplify their erosive forces (Tan and Curran, 2012). 3. Densely spaced large immobile particles causes high energy skimming flow that is able to create powerful eddies in gaps between the large particles (Hassan and Reid, 1990). This complex model explains the trends and results found within this study. Additionally, the results of this research were used to form the framework for predicting or understanding the impacts to a natural channel system caused by the introduction of large immobile material. Finally, the results of this study can be used to further research and develop design criteria for engineered in-channel structures to remedy imbalanced channel processes.

Rainfall variability and, in many places, the increase of rainfall intensity have a direct impact on rainfall erosivity. Increasing changes in demography have led to the acceleration of land cover changes in natural areas, as well as in cultivated areas, and, sometimes, in degraded areas and desertified landscapes. These anthropogenized landscapes are more sensitive to erosion. On the other hand, the increase in the number of dams in watersheds traps a great portion of sediment fluxes, which do not reach the sea in the same amount, nor at the same quality, with consequences on coastal geomorphodynamics. Book excerpt: Large, pulsed inputs of hillslope sediment delivered to gravel-bed rivers are often transported as 'waves' of material, modifying transport capacity as they accumulate and evacuate, altering river morphology. In particular, the alteration of bed surface texture is important, as this has direct implications for sedimentary and hydraulic processes, and ultimately in-stream habitat and flood risk. It is difficult to detect and accurately measure bed surface changes in real-world fluvial systems; however, with emerging technologies in the realm of sUAS, SfM, photosieving and roughness estimation it is now possible to rapidly quantify the textural changes associated with the passage of a sedimentary wave. The largest landslide triggered in the 7.8 Mw, 2016 Kaikōura earthquake dumped approximately 13M m3 of sediment into the Hapuku River, inducing dramatic morphological changes within the valley-confined downstream reaches. This study leverages emerging technologies to investigate subsequent changes to the grain-size distribution, effective roughness and facies unit assemblage of a site downstream of a steep canyon, during the initial build-up and migration of a wave of this pulse material. Four repeat sUAS surveys were completed between April and September, 2019, and were used to create sub-centimetre resolution SfM models. A new method for the extraction of surface grain-size distributions was then tested, pairing high-resolution orthomosaics with Purinton & Bookhagen's (2019a) edge-detection tool, PebbleCountsAuto. Effective roughness was extracted from the dense point cloud surfaces, and both measurements were used to quantify texture change and assist surface mapping of the site's facies assemblage alterations. Changes to bed texture were also related to ongoing processes of aggradation and erosion, based upon bed elevation change revealed by coeval airborne LiDAR surveys, collected in parallel research. Over the survey period, the bed surface grain-size distribution showed a significant change, at the 95% confidence level. D50 and D84 percentiles decreased by 6.7% and 10.1% respectively between July and September 2019, as the proportion of new wave material increased. The standard deviation of the grain-size distribution also lowered by 17%, indicating the improved sorting of the surface sediment mixture as the wave deposits buried and infilled the previously heterogeneous surface gravel units. This was also reflected in the 38% decrease in site's effective roughness and the 17% increase in the aggradation-linked facies units that characterised the surface of the wave deposit's downstream end. Overall, the final results revealed the fining, smoothing and homogenising effects of wave arrival upon the site's bed surface, while also presenting a real-world example for the application of emerging technologies for pulse research at the bed surface scale. The findings also emphasised the necessity of a multi-faceted approach to bed assessment, using facies assemblages to give spatial context to wave migration effects, something that is lost when considering averaged roughness and grain-size values alone.

Book excerpt: A technique is developed and tested to analyze the interaction of flowing water, bed topography, and bedload sediment transport in meandering channels where gravel bars are removed. The method relates the local velocity distribution, bed shear stress and sediment transport conditions to the local bed configuration in river bends before and after gravel bar removal. Specific attention is given to pool-depth changes as an immediate result of gravel removal, the residual effects of boundary shear stress changes, and the potential long-term consequences from subsequent runoff events with brief periods of increased streamflow and sediment transport. The most significant new aspect of this work is the ability to predict whether or not periodic gravel "mining" by means of bar scalping has a residual or cumulative effect on channel morphology and pool depth, particularly in bends. This application is tested against field data collected for the Chetco River and South Santiam River in Oregon, the East Fork River in Wyoming, and the upper Rhone River in France. Some of these sites have been partially subjected to gravel mining; others offer contrasting circumstances to allow comparisons of effects. The study suggests that the maximum velocity distribution shifts inward toward the convex bank of a channel bend at high water levels after gravel removal from a point bar, assuming that sediment transport rates and resupply from upstream are the same as before bar scalping. The inward shift of the maximum velocity distribution causes changes of boundary shear stress distribution in pool zones. Weaker boundary shear stresses are expected in pool zones after bar scalping. This will result in fewer incipient motion events in pool zones over each runoff season. As a result, the pool will experience net sediment deposition as a long-term effect of sediment transport events separated by periods of bed stability.
