Currently, a knowledge gap exists on the Trinity River (northern California) in how flow releases from Lewiston Dam potentially impact BMI drift and feeding opportunities for juvenile salmonids. Samples of BMIs from drift, benthos, and diets of juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) were collected from two sites in the upper Trinity River February-April 2018, during stable flow conditions (~8 ) and two increased flow conditions peaking at ~50 . Chironomidae (Diptera) and Baetidae (Ephemeroptera) were dominant BMI taxa in the drift, benthos and diets. Although contributions to biomass were more even across BMI taxa in the drift, biomass consumed by fish was dominated by Chironomidae and Baetidae at both study sites. Book excerpt: The widespread construction of dams to regulate rivers has dramatically altered aquatic ecosystems, but these impoundments also provide a unique opportunity to support freshwater conservation goals by implementing functional flow regimes designed to mitigate dam-related impacts on fisheries. Drifting invertebrates are an important food source for stream-dwelling juvenile salmonids such that drift feeding can be an energetically profitable foraging strategy, yet the effect of streamflow alterations on invertebrate drift dynamics is largely undetermined. Drift net samples were collected on four days before and four days during the ascending limb (14-42 m3/s) of restoration pulse flows in April 2020 at four sites located along 48 river kilometers of the Trinity River downstream of Lewiston Dam in northern California. Results provide evidence of an inconsistent response by drifting invertebrate biomass concentration (mg/m3) across pulse flows with increases observed during the first pulse, but little effects or potential decreases in subsequent pulses. Drift response varied among sites, where the effect of pulse flows was greater at sites closer to the dam and that underwent longer durations without disturbance in the preceding months. Weighted mean length (mm) of drifting invertebrates was lower at higher flows, a trend that may be temporally driven by differing aquatic or terrestrial taxonomic groups dominating during base or pulse flows. These findings suggest that dam-release restoration flows can temporarily increase prey availability in the drift for juvenile salmonids, but the exploration of alternative restoration flow actions with meaningful long-term benefits to salmonid populations may be a more beneficial solution.

More than 55,000 0-age chinook salmon were sampled at the John Day Dam airlift facility. This sample included 623 mark recoveries. Four hundred and eight (408) additional marks were recovered from purse seine samples taken at various sites throughout the reservoir. The average passage time of marked 0-age chinook salmon released in the McNary trailrace was 22 days in 1981. There was no statistically significant evidence to indicate that instream flows affected either the rate of movement or residence time of 0-age chinook salmon in John Day Reservoir in 1981. 7 references, 1 figure, 12 tables.

Book excerpt: Streambed particle size is a key factor influencing Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) spawning site suitability. Both the construction and removal of dams alter the sediment in rivers, resulting in changes to suitable habitat for salmon. When in place, dams impede the movement of sediment, resulting in an accumulation of sediment above the dam and a degradation of the riverbed below the dam. The release of this accumulated sediment after dam removal can restore a more natural distribution of sediment size classes below the dam, potentially improving salmon spawning habitat. Dam removal for the purpose of river restoration and improving conditions for salmon has increased in recent decades. The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of the sediment released from two large dam removals on the Elwha River in Washington state on streambed particle size, and the resultant amount of suitable spawnable habitat for Chinook salmon. Pebble counts were conducted in 45 riffles in 2009, before dam removal, and in 21 riffles in 2015, after dam removal, in the mainstem of the Lower and Middle sections of the Elwha River. The fraction of movable particles by a spawning Chinook salmon in the riffle crests increased by 43% after dam removal, resulting in more suitable spawning habitat. After dam removal, there was greater variation in sediment size within riffle crests, whereas there were predominantly larger particles before dam removal. The positive changes in sediment measured in this project support the concept that dam removal is a meaningful strategy for salmon restoration.

Additional marks (279) were recovered from purse seine samples taken at various sites throughout the reservoir. The average passage time to John Day Dam for marked O-age chinook salmon released in the McNary tailrace was 23 days. Weekend flow reductions at McNary Dam did not affect passage time of subyearling chinook salmon in John Day Reservoir. There was no statistical evidence to indicate that instream flows affected either the rate of movement or residence time of O-age chinook salmon in John Day Reservoir.

Weekly mean fork lengths of O-age chinook salmon captured at McNary and John fsm Dams and in the reservoir by purse seine ranged from 103 mm in mid-June to 166 mm in mid-December. Fish captured at the John Day Dam monitoring facility and by purse seine throughout the reservoir were in excellent condition. Preliminary analysis of stomach samples taken in 1982 and 1983 from purse seine catches indicates active feeding is taking place. The average passage time of the fastest moving marked O-age chinook salmon from McNary Dam to John Day Dam was 11 days (based on 25th percentile of mark recaptures). The average reservoir residence time was 22 days. Regression analysis was used to develop a description of the relationship of river flow to the rate of downstream movement of O-age chinook salmon in John Day Reservoir in 1983. The slope of this line and the correlation coefficient (R) were not significantly different from zero.

I assessed how the non-native predator, striped bass (Morone saxatilis), and habitat alterations (small diversion dam and other altered habitats) interact to influence mortality on native juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) migrating to sea on the lower Mokelumne River, CA (USA). Relative abundance and diet surveys across natural and human-altered habitats assessed functional and aggregative responses of striped bass. Striped bass showed elevated per capita consumption of juvenile salmon and behavioral aggregation (estimated as catch per unit effort - CPUE) at a small diversion dam site (Woodbridge Irrigation District Dam: per capita consumption= 3.54 juvenile salmon per striped bass and CPUE= 0.189) over other altered (0 juvenile salmon per striped bass; CPUE= 0.0024) and natural habitats (N/A; CPUE= 0.0003) creating a localized area of heightened predation. At this predation hotspot, experimental predator removals, diet energetic analysis, and before-after impact assessment estimated striped bass consumption of the population of out-migrating juvenile salmon to be between 10-29%. Striped bass per capita consumption rates among the three approaches were 0.92%, 1.01-1.11%, and 0.96-1.11% respectively. This study highlights how interactions between multiple stressors can exacerbate consequences for native species and are important to examine when predicting ecological impacts from stressors and planning local management strategies.
