Book Synopsis The Impact of Fire Disturbance on Carbon and Energy Exchange in the Alaskan Boreal Region by : Nancy Hitchcock Farwell French
Download or read book The Impact of Fire Disturbance on Carbon and Energy Exchange in the Alaskan Boreal Region written by Nancy Hitchcock Farwell French and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Land/atmosphere carbon and energy exchange are closely related, and fire has a profound impact on both. The exchange of energy within an ecosystem and between the land and atmosphere is directly impacted by disturbance through changes in surface structure, surface temperature, and surface albedo. Carbon exchange is profoundly impacted initially by the immediate release of carbon-based gases during combustion and dramatic changes in the surface energy budget. Over the long term, carbon exchange is altered by changes in the biologically controlled carbon cycle, which is affected by ecosystem structure and function as well as available energy (for example the influence of soil temperature on soil-based carbon cycle processes). The research described in this dissertation specifically addresses two aspects of this subject: (a) the impact of fire on land surface albedo, both immediately and over several years, and (b) the immediate release of carbon resulting from the burning of biomass"--Leaves 2-3.
Book Synopsis Fire, Climate Change, and Carbon Cycling in the Boreal Forest by : Eric S. Kasischke

This book was released on 2000-01-26 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discussion of the direct and indirect mechanisms by which fire and climate interact to influence carbon cycling in North American boreal forests. The first section summarizes the information needed to understand and manage fires' effects on the ecology of boreal forests and its influence on global climate change issues. Following chapters discuss in detail the role of fire in the ecology of boreal forests, present data sets on fire and the distribution of carbon, and treat the use of satellite imagery in monitoring these regions as well as approaches to modeling the relevant processes.

Book Synopsis Forest Fire Size Distribution in North American Boreal Forests by : Wenbin Cui
Download or read book Forest Fire Size Distribution in North American Boreal Forests written by Wenbin Cui and published by Sault Ste. Marie : Ontario Forest Research Institute. This book was released on 2006 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this report is to investigate and summarize the current knowledge about fire size distribution (FSD), with special reference to how resource professionals and researchers use FSD, and where the gaps in FSD knowledge are. The focus of this investigation, given Ontario's vantage point, was the North American boreal forest. First, the report examines factors necessary to understand FSD; second, it summarizes what is reported on FSD in scientific literature; third, it reviews the past research on FSD, focusing on methodologies and approaches; finally, it offers a summary of the state of knowledge on FSD, including knowledge gap.--Document.
Book Synopsis Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions of Gases and Particles by : Peter S. Liss
Download or read book Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions of Gases and Particles written by Peter S. Liss and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-18 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oceans and atmosphere interact through various processes, including the transfer of momentum, heat, gases and particles. In this book leading international experts come together to provide a state-of-the-art account of these exchanges and their role in the Earth-system, with particular focus on gases and particles. Chapters in the book cover: i) the ocean-atmosphere exchange of short-lived trace gases; ii) mechanisms and models of interfacial exchange (including transfer velocity parameterisations); iii) ocean-atmosphere exchange of the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide; iv) ocean atmosphere exchange of particles and v) current and future data collection and synthesis efforts. The scope of the book extends to the biogeochemical responses to emitted / deposited material and interactions and feedbacks in the wider Earth-system context. This work constitutes a highly detailed synthesis and reference; of interest to higher-level university students (Masters, PhD) and researchers in ocean-atmosphere interactions and related fields (Earth-system science, marine / atmospheric biogeochemistry / climate). Production of this book was supported and funded by the EU COST Action 735 and coordinated by the International SOLAS (Surface Ocean- Lower Atmosphere Study) project office.
Book Synopsis Fire and Vegetation Dynamics by : Edward A. Johnson
Download or read book Fire and Vegetation Dynamics written by Edward A. Johnson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-08-27 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assembles the relevant studies of fire intensity, rate of spread, fuel consumption, fire frequency, and fire weather in the North American boreal forest. The central thesis is that the North American boreal forest has at least four wildfire characteristics that are important in understanding the dynamics of its plant populations: the large size of the burns with respect to dispersal distances; the short recurrence time of fire with respect to tree lifespans; the high mortality of plants due to the predominance of crown fires; and a good germination surface due to the large area of the forest floor that is covered by ash.

Book Synopsis Ecosystems of California by : Harold Mooney
Download or read book Ecosystems of California written by Harold Mooney and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016-01-19 with total page 1008 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This long-anticipated reference and sourcebook for CaliforniaÕs remarkable ecological abundance provides an integrated assessment of each major ecosystem typeÑits distribution, structure, function, and management. A comprehensive synthesis of our knowledge about this biologically diverse state, Ecosystems of California covers the state from oceans to mountaintops using multiple lenses: past and present, flora and fauna, aquatic and terrestrial, natural and managed. Each chapter evaluates natural processes for a specific ecosystem, describes drivers of change, and discusses how that ecosystem may be altered in the future. This book also explores the drivers of CaliforniaÕs ecological patterns and the history of the stateÕs various ecosystems, outlining how the challenges of climate change and invasive species and opportunities for regulation and stewardship could potentially affect the stateÕs ecosystems. The text explicitly incorporates both human impacts and conservation and restoration efforts and shows how ecosystems support human well-being. Edited by two esteemed ecosystem ecologists and with overviews by leading experts on each ecosystem, this definitive work will be indispensable for natural resource management and conservation professionals as well as for undergraduate or graduate students of CaliforniaÕs environment and curious naturalists.
