Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the world, policymakers and civil society are debating how economic and trade policies shape public health. This edited collection adds a new dimension to this debate. It synthesizes research from a variety of disciplines to analyse how the liberalization of international trade affects reproductive health and rights. Case studies from Mexico, Sri Lanka, China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Egypt illuminate how trade-related changes in women’s employment influence their reproductive needs and capacities. The book demonstrates how global and national trade policies affect the quality, quantity, and cost of reproductive health services. Contributors also explore the implications of the World Trade Organization and the various trade agreements under its purview for reproductive health services and rights. Ultimately, this collection addresses the key policy issues for advocates of both reproductive health and rights and economic justice, and shows how trade agreements weighted against the poor in the South have very specific gendered consequences. This book is aimed at an inter-disciplinary audience of economists, public health professionals, demographers, sociologists, anthropologists, and women’s studies specialists. It will also be of interest to policymakers and representatives of civil society organizations working on health, economic justice, and employment issues.

Book excerpt: Bangladesh is relatively underprivileged country in terms of such key indicators as per capita income and proportion living below the poverty line which constitute 40% of total population and 43.8% of rural population. Most of the rural women are illiterate, and possess very low socio-economic status. They are not aware of using family planning methods and this tendency of the rural women increases the rural fertility. There are some social stigmas such as early marriage, dowry, and limited property inheritance rights that cause misery for many rural women. For being married early, our rural women enter in the reproductive age very earlier. Moreover, Early marriage act as a great hindrance against women education.Rural women are excluded from social and household decision making process. Besides these, in the rural area fertility is directly and significantly influenced by the socio-economic status of the women.

Book excerpt: The study attempts to explain changes in reproductive behaviour of rural women of Bangladesh that has occurred at a time when the country was predominantly poor and agricultural. Three different areas were studied, using time series analysis, and changes measured by demand for additional children and current contraceptive use. The findings show that demand for no additional children was generated prior to the fertility decline and that the family planning programme helped to mitigate the demand for fertility control modifying supply logistics since the late 1970s. Reproductive behaviour of women is strongly affected by biosocial and cultural factors related to patriarchal social structure. Desired family size in all three areas were similar prior to the fertility decline of the 1980s. It was lower than the fertility rate and is probably affected by prior improved survivorship. During the period studied, desired family size reduced equally in all three areas. With this same level of desired family size, an efficient Matlab Family planning programme successfully reduced fertility from the mid 1970s, while high fertility in the other two areas began to decline from the 1980s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2011. This study is Volume I of the Global Environment and Development 7 volume set. One of the most promising areas identified in the initial study was female labor-force participation. If good jobs at decent wages were offered to women, particularly those living in rural areas, would such employment have an effect on family size? Would their jobs compete for the women's time as mothers and housewives, offer them an alternative route to acquiring status and a sense of purpose, and perhaps also provide the women with an independent source of income which would enable them to achieve more control over their lives? But, as the original volume makes clear, the situation is more complicated than it first appears to be.
