This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon chip technology; microprocessor technology; information technology; or quite simply new technology. These are some of the names representing the microelectronics revolution depending upon the audience being addressed by speaker or writer. No previous new industrial development has caused such widespread publicity and discussion amongst users and researchers as the new technology. Concern is being expressed about the effects of new technology on employment, job satisfaction, social life, leisure activities and the economics of commerce and industry. The late 70s saw many doom-laden predictions of those effects but by 1983 both management and trade unions were taking a more objective view of the social and economic impacts, and many correspondents now see the new technology as a means of opening up new industries and overcoming the effects of world recessions. The "chip" has involved the factory floor, the office, the supermarket and the home. Electronic funds transfer, electronic shopping, microelectronic domestic appliances, word processors and microprocessor-controlled machinery mean that the new technology has pervaded all aspects of social and economic life, and the developed countries are now coming to accept it as part of society as a whole. Inevitably the flood of literature on the social and economic impacts of new technology has been overwhelming. Unfortunately the quality of information and arguments propagated at conferences, in journal papers and research reports has indicated that there has been little quantifiable evidence available on the effects of these impacts.
Book Synopsis The Socio-Economic Impact of Microelectronics by : J. Berting
Download or read book The Socio-Economic Impact of Microelectronics written by J. Berting and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Socio-Economic Impact of Microelectronics contains papers presented at an international conference on socio-economic problems and potentialities of the application of micro-electronics held in Zandvoort, the Netherlands, in September 1979. Organized into eight sections, this book begins with the technological evaluation of microelectronics. Subsequent sections focus on the social economic and political consequences of the widespread use of microelectronics; opportunities and problems for socialist countries brought about by microelectronics technology; effects of microelectronics on developing countries; as well as problems connected with industrial relations and organization of work. The influence of the technology on political/economic, epistemological, ethical/moral, and esthetic values and a broad concept of informatics introducing the notions of living and non-living environments as well as of human, non-human, constructed, natural, and abstract systems are explained. The last section contains the conclusions of the chairman of the conference on the application of microelectronics.
Book Synopsis Computers on the Job by : Heather Menzies
Download or read book Computers on the Job written by Heather Menzies and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written as the computer revolution dawned on Canadian society, Computers on the Job introduces the effects of technological change on people in their homes and workplaces. Heather Menzies explains, in clear, nontechnical terms, how the microcochip unleashes the full potential of computers, allowing employers to automate many routine jobs and transform others--sometimes for the benefit of employees, sometimes not. She traces the effects of computerization on office work, on the service industry and on traditional blue-collar occupations, forecasting changes that, in many cases, have come to pass. Computers on the Job is a pioneering study of the impact of widespread computer use on Canadian society.

Book Synopsis Design Discourse by : Victor Margolin
Download or read book Design Discourse written by Victor Margolin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1989-09-15 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The editor has gathered together a body of writing in the emerging field of design studies. The contributors argue in different ways for a rethinking of design in the light of its cultural significance and its powerful position in today's society. The collection begins with a discussion of the various expressions of opposition to the modernists' purist approach toward design. Drawing on postmodernist theory and other critical strategies, the writers examine the relations among design, technology, and social organization to show how design has become a complex and multidisciplinary activity. The second section provides examples of new methods of interpreting and analysing design, ranging from rhetoric and semiotics to phenomenology, demonstrating how meaning is created visually. A final section related to design history shifts its emphasis to ideological frameworks such as capitalism and patriarchy that establish boundaries for the production and use of design.

Book Synopsis European Modernism and the Information Society by : W. Boyd Rayward
Download or read book European Modernism and the Information Society written by W. Boyd Rayward and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uniting a team of international and interdisciplinary scholars, this volume considers the views of early twentieth-century European thinkers on the creation, dissemination and management of publicly available information. Interdisciplinary in perspective, the volume reflects the nature of the thinkers discussed, including Otto Neurath, Patrick Geddes, the English Fabians, Paul Otlet, Wilhelm Ostwald and H. G. Wells. The work also charts the interest since the latter part of the nineteenth century in finding new ways to think about and to manage the growing body of available information in order to achieve aims such as the advancement of Western civilization, the alleviation of inequalities across classes and countries, and the promotion of peaceful coexistence between nations. In doing so, the contributors provide a novel historical context for assessing widely-held assumptions about today's globalized, 'post modern' information society. This volume will interest all who are curious about the creation of a modern networked information society.

Book Synopsis International Competitiveness in Electronics by : Congress of the U.S., Washington, DC. Office of Technology Assessment
Download or read book International Competitiveness in Electronics written by Congress of the U.S., Washington, DC. Office of Technology Assessment and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1983 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This assessment continues the Office of Technology Assessment's (OTA) exploration of the meaning of industrial policy in the United States context, while also examining the industrial policies of several U.S. economic rivals. The major focus is on electronics, an area which virtually defines "high technology" of the 1980's. The assessment sets the characteristics of the technology itself alongside other forces that exert major influences over international competitiveness. Specific areas addressed include: electronics technology; structure, trade, and competitiveness in the international electronics industry; quality, reliability, and automation in manufacturing; role of financing in competitiveness and electronics; human resources (education, training, management); employment effects; national industrial policies; and U.S. trade policies and their effects. The report concludes by outlining five options for a U.S. industrial policy, drawing on electronics for examples of past and prospective impacts, as well as on OTA's previous studies of the steel and automotive industries. A detailed summary and introductory comments are included. Also included in appendices are case studies in the development and marketing of electronics products, a discussion of offshore manufacturing, and a glossary of terms used in the assessment. (JN)
