Book excerpt: This study aims to examine the impact of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) on China's international agricultural trade and its regional agricultural development, using the Global Trade Analysis Project model and the China Agricultural Decision Support System. Our analysis showed that: (i) CAFTA will improve resource allocation efficiencies for both China and ASEAN and will promote bilateral agricultural trade and, hence, will have positive effects on the economic development of both sides' (ii) CAFTA will accelerate China's export of the agricultural commodities in which it has comparative advantages, such as vegetables, wheat and horticultural products, but at the same time bring about a large increase in imports of commodities such as vegetable oil and sugar; and (iii) CAFTA will have significantly varying impacts on China's regional agricultural development because of large differences in the agricultural production structure in each region. Our results indicate that agriculture in the northern, northeastern and eastern regions of China will benefit from CAFTA, whereas agriculture development in southern China will suffer. Those regional specific impacts are quite different from the effects brought by multilateral free trade treaties, such as those of the WTO, which usually have positive effects on south China but negative impacts on the northern and western parts of China.

Book excerpt: China's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) has had profound consequences for the structure of its economy, and there will many more before the full benefits of an open trading regime will be realised. AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY IN CHINA explains the background to China's WTO accession and links accession to reforms beginning as far back as 1979. The book highlights China's policymakers' decision to move away from protectionism and grain self-sufficiency and illustrates how China's step away from direct participation in the agricultural sector to indirect regulatory involvement and liberalisation could encourage further economic growth. Yet not all economic growth is cost-free. AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY IN CHINA explores the short-term impacts of WTO accession as well as the mid and long-term implications of greater market involvement at an economy-wide and regional level. Growing divides between coastal and inland regions - and differences in rural and urban growth - will require a better understanding of the consequences of greater market dependency. AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY IN CHINA adds to the existing knowledge of China's agricultural growth as well as the impacts and interrelationships between WTO accession and China's participation in other regional free trade agreements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural products are one of Vietnam’s most important exports, contributing considerably to the overall export turnover of the country. Vietnam’s agricultural exports are easily affected by external factors. It is overly dependent on the Chinese market, and its agricultural products do not as yet meet strict global standards. Challenges facing Vietnam’s export of fruits and vegetables to the Chinese market include technical barriers, long risk assessment periods, restrictions on products exported through official quotas to the Chinese market, and frequent changes in China’s policy on border crossings. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of market diversification to this sector. To further develop its agricultural export sector, Vietnam needs to gather and consolidate information on import standards and guide its farmers on product quality requirements. Besides, efforts to gradually diversify its markets are essential for it to avoid being dependent on a small number of partners and markets. Vietnam’s participation in international organizations such as ASEAN, APEC, WTO, and AEC exemplifies its increasingly active efforts at seeking new development opportunities. The seventeen bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements which have been signed by Vietnam partly demonstrates efforts at achieving market diversification.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) was created as early as 1967 but ASEAN economic cooperation moved in a lackluster pace with few concrete accomplishments. To move the organization from its benign state of economic cooperation, the member states signed in 1992 the agreement on ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) which is to be fully realized by the year 2003. Although agricultural products were initially excluded from the agreement to protect a sensitive sector like agriculture from open regional competition, the member states decided to include them in AFTA in 1995. Through application of a spatial price equilibrium model, the effects of AFTA on demand, supply, prices and trade of selected agricultural products in ASEAN countries and their major trading partners were analyzed. The spatial characteristic of the model analysis facilitated simulation of trade flows and thus provided insights on the possible changes in intra- and extra-ASEAN trade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 2002 ASEAN and China signed an agreement to form an FTA by 2010. It is anticipated that both parties will gain from the FTA. However, the rapid growth of China since the early 1990s is now seen as a threat to the future of ASEAN's economic growth. The trade sector is the backbone of ASEAN's economic growth, and China's impressive economic growth and development, coupled with its low cost of production have created trade and investment diversions for most members of ASEAN. The strong competition between the regions is attributed to the factor of homogeneity in production and exports: what ASEAN produces and exports, China produces and exports as well. Thus, countries which have the lowest cost of production will gain in trading. Investment diversion happens in two forms: (1) new investments or foreign firms preferring China to ASEAN; and (2) re-location of foreign firms from ASEAN countries to China (Singapore and Malaysia have experienced this phenomenon). We believes that the ACFTA does not promise total gains to members of ASEAN.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenal rise of China as an economic power, as well as her heightened political and military clout that has been growing in tandem with this, inevitably brought forth, both regionally and globally, increasing concern over whether she is posing a threat to regional stability and prosperity, and if so, in what way. It is the modest aim of this book to contribute to the study of the impact of this Asian giant upon the global economic landscape, to address a question that lingers in the psyche of a world that is watching her rise with a mix of curiosity, hope and trepidation: whether this emerging great trading nation represents an opportunity or a threat, a partner or a rival. The first section of the book, "China in the World", addresses the opportunities and challenges presented by China's increasing presence in Latin America, analyzes the recent Sino-Scandinavian trade and investment relations, and introduces an eclectic model to explain China's trade based on factor endowments, increasing returns, nonhomothetic preferences, and trade costs. The second section, "China and Malaysia in the Regional Economy", scrutinizes the changes of China's perception in respect of free trade agreements from early skepticism to seeing FTA as an effective tool to defuse persistent fears among her neighbours of a "China threat", tests the impact of Sino-Malaysian trade integration on Malaysia's growth, assesses the opportunities and challenges that are open to Malaysian firms under ACFTA, investigates the extent of production sharing and the position of Malaysia's exports in the quality ladder with China, and looks at whether the comparative advantages of Malaysia in goods have altered significantly since China's entry into the WTO. The last section of the book, "Challenges of Reform", focusing on the domestic political and socioeconomic nexus involved in the transformation of modern China, provides an interregional comparative.

Increasingly, the development agenda in the region, focusing on growth, jobs and social stability, has become interconnected with trade policy aspects, including market access and competitiveness. In the light of these links, this collection of papers discusses fundamental strategies to promote cross-border trade flows, both globally and regionally, along with domestic policies on logistics, trade facilitation, standards and institutions, in order to maximise development outcomes and distribute the gains from trade widely.
