This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes the story of Clarté, Le Corbusier’s first apartment building, continuing the narrative into the 21st century. The steel skeleton building completed in Geneva in 1930/1932 is a prototype of the Moderne style and a precursor of the Unité d’Habitation. The building was neglected for many decades and not listed as a historic building until the 1990s. In 2007 the external envelope was repaired as the first step, followed by refurbishment of the interior, in which building preservation requirements were taken into account in an exemplary manner. The building log book by the architects and structural engineers is illustrated with numerous new and historic drawings and photographs, and has been supplemented with an account of the building’s history. The renovated building is presented in large photographs.

Book excerpt: Originally published in Germany in 1968, this first comprehensive and critical survey of Le Corbusier's life and work soon became the standard text on the architect and polymath. French, Spanish, English, Japanese and Korean editions followed, but the book has now been out of print for almost two decades. In the meantime, Le Corbusier's archives in Paris have become available for research, resulting in an avalanche of scholarship. Von Moos' critical take and the basic criteria by which the subject is organized and historicized remain surprisingly pertinent in the context of this recent jungle of Corbusier studies. This new, completely revised edition is based on the 1979 version published in English by the MIT Press but offers a substantially updated body of illustrations. Each of the seven chapters is supplemented by a critical survey of recent scholarship on the respective issues. An updated edition of this acclaimed book, an essential read for students of architecture and architectural history.

For this extensively revised and updated fifth edition of Modern Architecture, Frampton added new chapters exploring the ongoing modernist tradition in architecture while also examining the varied responses to the urgent need to build more sustainably and create structures that will withstand changing climates. Book excerpt: "Swiss architects Marianne Burkhalter and Christian Sumi are dedicated to an exploration of the nature of materials and construction. In the last fifteen years, they have built a series of remarkable buildings in wood and stone in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Their work is a thoughtful pursuit of the fundamentals of architectural construction-a style that, like that of Zumthor's buildings, might be called Alpine minimalism. Their interest in simple forms and shapes, in luminous color, in the natural grain patterns of wood, and in the opportunities afforded by joinery and other forms of craftsmanship are evident in every aspect of their built work. This comprehensive monograph includes an in-depth look at 25 of Burkhalter and Sumi's projects, including their most famous built work, the Hotel Zurichberg. Essays by Eugene Asse, Detlef Mertins, Steven Spier, and Lynnette Widder, based respectively in Moscow, Toronto, London, and New York, explore their unique style and demonstrate the growing international acknowledgement of their practice." -- Publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thought-provoking book, Jane Rendell explores how architectural space registers in psychoanalysis. She investigates both the inherently spatial vocabulary of psychoanalysis and ideas around the physical 'setting' of the psychoanalytic encounter, with reference to Sigmund Freud, D.W. Winnicott and Andre Green. Building on the innovative writing methods employed in Art and Architecture and Site-Writing, she also addresses the concept of architecture as 'social condenser' a Russian constructivist notion that connects material space and community relations. Tracing this idea's progress from 1920s Moscow to 1950s Britain, Rendell shows how interior and exterior meet in both psychoanalysis and architectural practice. Illuminating a novel field of interdisciplinary enquiry, this book breathes fresh life into notions of social space."

Book excerpt: Timo Carl presents alternatives to curtain wall facades and other flat boundaries creating autonomous spaces. He investigates facade typologies with multiple material layers to strategize the relationship between buildings and their environment. By revisiting Le Corbusier ́s seminal brise soleil an alternative reading of the modern project emerges: one that is not based on classical compositional rules, but instead on the dynamic relationships with environmental forces. Finally, an exciting series of project-based investigations sets out innovative ways in which novel deep skins combine energy-conscious performance with the poetics of architecture.
