The author details construction of a sub-10 femtosecond and sub-10 nanometer spatiotemporal resolution ultrafast photoemission microscope which is subsequently used for the discovery of topological meron and skyrmion-like plasmonic quasiparticles. In particular, this enabled the creation of movies of the surface plasmon polariton fields evolving on sub-optical wavelength scales at around 0.1 femtosecond per image frame undergoing vortex phase evolution. The key insight that the transverse spin of surface plasmon polaritons undergoes a texturing into meron or skyrmion-like topological quasiparticles (defined by the geometric charge of the preparation) follows. In addition, this thesis develops an analytical theory of these new topological quasiparticles, opening new avenues of research, while the ultrafast microscopy techniques established within will also be broadly applicable to studies of nanoscale optical excitations in electronic materials.

Book excerpt: Heat transport in solids is one of the oldest problems in physics, dating back to the earliest formulations of thermodynamics. The classical laws of heat conduction are valid as long as the observed time and length scales are larger than the relaxation time and mean free path of the underlying microscopic heat carriers, such as electrons and phonons. With the advent of ultrafast lasers and nanoscale systems these regimes can now be surpassed and new refined models of heat transport are needed. In particular, the interaction of ultrashort light pulses with matter can excite electrons to high temperatures, leading to a local non-equilibrium of electrons and phonons. Under these conditions, also the transport properties of the carriers are altered.So far, these effects have typically been studied in the time domain. The cooling of photo-excited hot electrons has been studied both in metals as well as novel 2D materials, such as graphene. However, due to a lack of spatio-temporal resolution, it has not been possible to distinguish the effects of hot-electron diffusion from other cooling mechanisms, such as electron-phonon coupling.In this thesis, I directly track such ultrafast heat and carrier diffusion in space and time with ultrafast microscopy. By using the recently developed technique of probe-beam-scanning transient-absorption microscopy on thin gold films I directly resolve, for the first time, a transition from hot-electron diffusion to phonon-limited diffusion on the picosecond timescale. I support the understanding of these complex dynamics by theoretical modeling of the thermo-optical response based on a two-temperature model.I apply the same technique to study hot carrier diffusion in atomically thin monolayer graphene. By comparing differently prepared samples, I study the strong influence of external parameters, such as production type, substrate, and environment on carrier diffusion. Finally, I study hot carrier diffusion in exfoliated and encapsulated graphene devices with a novel technique of ultrafast spatio-temporal photocurrent microscopy based on the photothermoelectric effect. I extract diffusion dynamics for electrically characterized samples with the help of theoretical spatio-temporal modeling, thereby testing the fundamental relationship between electrical and thermal carrier transport.The precise quantification of ultrafast and nanoscale carrier transport with these state-of-the-art techniques leads to a broader understanding of non-equilibrium dynamics and could ultimately help the design, optimization, and heat management of the next generation of ultra-compact (opto-) electronic devices, such as solar cells, photodetectors, or integrated circuits.

Book excerpt: Conjugated polymers are poised to play an important role in emerging organic electronic applications because they are soft and flexible, chemically versatile, relatively low-cost, and solution processable. This unique combination of properties enables conjugated polymers to be used in various applications, such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), and organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Despite the advantages of conjugated polymers, however, their mobilities and device performance still lag behind their inorganic semiconductor counterparts. Across the various applications that conjugated polymers are used in, the structure and morphology of the active layer is intimately tied to their properties, such that better methods of characterizing morphology are a crucial step towards improving device performance. In this dissertation, we will introduce transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as a powerful characterization tool that can be used to better understand the structure and morphology of conjugated polymers. TEM is a valuable characterization tool because it has a multitude of modalities such as bright/dark field imaging, energy-filtered TEM (EFTEM), scanning TEM (STEM), diffraction, electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM). However, the main limitation in polymer TEM is electron beam damage. Although the primary processes of radiation damage in soft materials are known to be ionization and excitation, the secondary processes that follow are complex and not well understood. In this thesis, we seek to better understand beam damage of soft materials in the TEM and develop approaches for mitigating damage such that higher resolution can be achieved. We begin by establishing an optimized protocol for EFTEM of polymeric materials which enables sulfur elemental mapping on a series of high-performance organic photovoltaic polymer/fullerene blends. We find that beam damage is not detrimental for this technique, as heavy sulfur atoms do not tend to diffuse and we are effectively imaging sulfur atoms in a carbon-rich matrix at high doses. While this improves our understanding of morphology of large-scale phase separation, the bulk of this thesis focuses on pushing towards sub-nanometer resolution in conjugated polymers. We will discuss a systematic set of beam damage studies on a series of conjugated polymers. These damage experiments lead to imaging conditions that minimize damage, and we demonstrate that it enables the direct imaging of 3.6 Å [pi]-[pi] stacking in a solution processed conjugated polymer, establishing a new record for this class of materials. These damage experiments also suggest that the dominant mechanism of beam damage is the diffusion of a reacting species that is likely generated by ionization of side chains. This proposed mechanism leads to the discovery that the addition of antioxidants can be used to mitigate beam damage at room temperature, as antioxidants are able to neutralize free radicals. We also explore the probe size dependence of beam damage and show that damage decreases as probe size decreases. This is likely because damage is occurring through the diffusion of a reacting species not just within the illuminated area, but also outside the illuminated area, such that smaller probe sizes undersample the damaged area. Thus, we demonstrate that convergent beam techniques such as scanning nanodiffraction, also known as four-dimensional scanning TEM (4D STEM), are amenable to beam-sensitive materials. Finally, we explore the challenges of characterizing biological materials, which face many of the same challenges as polymers. For example, we use strategies developed for EFTEM of polymers on calcium mapping of canine parvovirus. We also transfer strategies from liquid TEM to liquid resonant soft X-ray scattering (RSoXS) of lipid vesicles. It is our hope that the results established throughout this work will help further development in the field of soft materials characterization, particularly in our understanding of conjugated polymers for organic electronics. This work demonstrates that length scales previously thought to be unachievable in soft matter electron microscopy are within reach, and we hope that the techniques and protocols established here will enable structure-property investigations at lengths scales that were previously difficult to observe in the TEM.
