Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With clear purpose and remarkable style, David Baily Harned writes about our identity as an imaginative act of mind and spirit. In this important theological work, Harned shows that the “master images” of self as player, sufferer, and vandal are fundamental ways of understanding who we are and what we might be in our lifetime. The book points out that conflicting images of ourselves often develop out of our social relationships and our bodily experiences. Some images are more important than others, and it is these “master images” that express what is most fundamental to our self-understanding. The extent to which the master images are recognized by us and allowed to subdue lesser images determines our stability and wholeness as persons. Recognition of God’s presence, especially as it is disclosed to us in hearing and sensing, is the primary way to growth in wisdom, character, and virtue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carroll Saussy believes that women, especially, have difficulty with self-esteem because their lives are shaped and controlled by patriarchal rules and roles that make them second-class citizens. Only in recent decades and in highly educated or politically active communities have women awakened to and begun to expose the damaging effects of the domination-subordination soul of patriarchy. Saussy takes a theological and ideological approach in reviewing the system that fosters such poor self-esteem.

Book excerpt: Andre Rival, at home in both Paris and Berlin, has created a fascinating project out of a relatively simple idea: 100 women taking photographs of themselves. The outcome is both startling and impressive. It is an expression of contemporary female identity - self-aware, distinctive and thoroughly positive, in a series of nude photographs that inexorably capture and hold our attention, revealing at the same time the artist's highly creative approach to the medium of photography and to the individual selves of the women portrayed. The author describes his project in this way: "We are inundated with pictures of women in the media. Ordinarily, the pictures we see seek to achieve a kind of 'sameness' based on unwritten ideals of beauty; physical perfection, total fitness become the determining factors. These images of women, provoked as they are by the media industry, awakened in me the urge to confront both that industry and myself with something else. I chose to set aside my own ways of thinking and do a series of 100 women in which it was not I who would put together the photographs, but the women themselves. For this purpose, I gave them each a shutter-switch and left the room. That represented the beginning of the attempt to enable the women to become photographic subjects rather than objects; they were left to decide on their own which personal image of themselves they wanted to convey. The conditions were the same for all of the women: the same lighting, the same white background and the same unchanged camera position. It was essential to fix the location of the camera, so that the women did not perceive themselves as being pursued by an 'observer'; instead, they were able to establishdistance and camera angle themselves with the aid of a video screen that showed them each camera exposure as a still photo".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. This text looks at what being Russian means to a Russian politician, the country they live in and what they think it ought to be. It is a study of self-images in Russia, pertaining to the Russian state policy and the cognitive and affective strands regarding Russia's past, its friends and foes externally and internally, and Russia's role in the international arena, as well as key issues related to internal developments. This book attempts to assess to what extent a new sense of identity emerged in Russia during the decade after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. In this book Petersson argues that the development of a civic national identity, centered around belonging to the state and not an ethnic community, is the only viable option to prevent further disintegration and bring about stability and cohesion for the country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores a central political paradox: why American scholars, journalists, and citizens periodically question the viability of their presidential electoral system and yet believe that presidential elections are our best hope for tomorrow. The book argues that the key to understanding this paradox lies in the concept of "self-image," exploring relationships between campaign activities and political culture. After presenting an introduction to the history of presidential campaigning and a theory of political image, the book arranges essays in three parts: images centered on candidates, mass media, and the public. A final essay assesses explanations of the contrasts between the 1988 and 1992elections and suggests tomorrow's research agenda.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The societal web of life is underpinned by one concept - that of Self and Other - which emerged earlier in this century. The concept has received a new formulation within the field of the phenomenology of life and the human creative condition, finding a foothold, a point of reference that radiates novel, seminal insights. It is nothing other than the creative fulcrum of human functioning. The self-individualisation of the human being, as revealed in the present collection, is existentially and vitally intertwined with that of the Other. Tymieniecka's seminal idea of the `trans-actional' is explored in this collection of essays, which reveals a variety of significant perspectives, weaving the cycles of the human universe of existence in an essential oscillation between the Self and the Other. In this oscillation we throw out our existential tentacles, trying to gain a living space with respect to each other, all the while engaging in a mutual creative prompting and attunement.

Book excerpt: Thanks to recent advances in sensors, communication and satellite technology, data storage, processing and networking capabilities, satellite image acquisition and mining are now on the rise. In turn, satellite images play a vital role in providing essential geographical information. Highly accurate automatic classification and decision support systems can facilitate the efforts of data analysts, reduce human error, and allow the rapid and rigorous analysis of land use and land cover information. Integrating Machine Learning (ML) technology with the human visual psychometric can help meet geologists’ demands for more efficient and higher-quality classification in real time. This book introduces readers to key concepts, methods and models for satellite image analysis; highlights state-of-the-art classification and clustering techniques; discusses recent developments and remaining challenges; and addresses various applications, making it a valuable asset for engineers, data analysts and researchers in the fields of geographic information systems and remote sensing engineering.
