In Images of Faith, Miriam Rockness invites us to learn this art of seeing, so that we are able, as C. S. Lewis declared, "to attend ... to come awake ... still more, to remain awake" to the reality of God's presence in our own lives. This is an invitation well worth accepting.
Book Synopsis Seeing Faith, Printing Pictures: Religious Identity during the English Reformation by : David J. Davis
Download or read book Seeing Faith, Printing Pictures: Religious Identity during the English Reformation written by David J. Davis and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-03-27 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarship on religious printed images during the English Reformation (1535-1603) has generally focused on a few illustrated works and has portrayed this period in England as a predominantly non-visual religious culture. The combination of iconoclasm and Calvinist doctrine have led to a misunderstanding as to the unique ways that English Protestants used religious printed images. Building on recent work in the history of the book and print studies, this book analyzes the widespread body of religious illustration, such as images of God the Father and Christ, in Reformation England, assessing what religious beliefs they communicated and how their use evolved during the period. The result is a unique analysis of how the Reformation in England both destroyed certain aspects of traditional imagery as well as embraced and reformulated others into expressions of its own character and identity.

Book excerpt: "Jack Shainman Gallery is pleased to present 'Faith' Jackie Nickerson's second solo exhibition at the gallery. 'Faith' is a compelling portrayal of a hidden world, the Catholic religious orders of Ireland. Nickerson was granted unprecedented access to places that have never been seen before by outsiders. For two-and-a-half years, Nickerson photographed inside the churches, convents and abbeys of Ireland. 'Faith' juxtaposes gentle portraits with straightforward images of daily rituals and communal devotion - neatly swept wooden floors on long corridors, sunny libraries attended by Virgin Mary figurines - to suggest an austere existence grounded in optimism, strength and contentment."--Gallery website.

Book Synopsis Portraits in Faith by : Daniel Epstein
Download or read book Portraits in Faith written by Daniel Epstein and published by . This book was released on 2021-11 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 15 years, Daniel Epstein, a Marketing Director at one of the world's largest corporations, Procter & Gamble, traveled the world for business and for faith. Motivated by his own search to fill the "God-sized hole" in his life, he did not know where it would lead. He felt that if he did not develop some type of spiritual faith he would die. Born and raised a Jew, Daniel's challenges with relationships, work, and "life" forced him at age 36 to get on his knees and pray to a God he did not know, a higher power not specific to either his own Judaism or any religion, and ask for help. In order to keep his new found sense of faith alive and to gain from the experience of others, Daniel created a spiritual exercise out of interviewing people around the world about the role of faith in their lives. As a photographer, Daniel also captured a moment with each person in a black and white portrait meant to evoke their true spirit. In 2012, Daniel launched Portraits on Faith online as the largest documentary project on faith ever compiled by a single person. Over 100 of the 500 portraits shot have been published from 27 countries, which have been viewed over 300,000 times by people around the world. As a culmination of all the work that has to this moment, Daniel is publishing the first volume of Portraits in Faith, which include over 100 portraits, quotes, and reflections on faith from people spanning the world, from over 40 faith traditions and denominations.
Book Synopsis Creative in the Image of God by : Katherine M. Douglass
Download or read book Creative in the Image of God written by Katherine M. Douglass and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The declining religious participation among young adults, or “Rise of the Nones,” has signaled alarms across American Christianity. A closer look into the faith lives of thirty young adults who are, or were at one time, connected with a church, however, shows an articulate and aesthetically embodied faith life that seeks out connection with others, expression of their identity, and an openness to encountering God. Young adults see themselves, and all people in this pluralistic world, as bearing the image of God. They see creativity, in their own lives and in the lives of others, as evidence of this identity. This book is not an appeal to put more art into congregations, but rather an invitation to attend to aesthetic, embodied ways of knowing that exist among all people.

Download or read book Approval Junkie written by Faith Salie and published by Crown. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From comedian and journalist Faith Salie, of NPR's Wait Wait…Don't Tell Me! and CBS News Sunday Morning, a collection of daring, funny essays chronicling the author's adventures during her lifelong quest for approval Faith Salie has done it all in the name of validation. Whether she’s trying to impress her parents with a perfect GPA, undergoing an exorcism to save her toxic marriage, or baking a 3D excavator cake for her son’s birthday, Salie is the ultimate approval seeker—an “approval junkie,” if you will. In this collection of daring, honest essays, Salie shares stories from her lifelong quest for gold stars, recounting her strategy for winning (very Southern) high school beauty pageant; her struggle to pick the perfect outfit to wear to her divorce; and her difficulty falling in love again, and then conceiving, in the years following her mother’s death. With thoughtful irreverence, Salie reflects on why she tries so hard to please others, and herself, highlighting a phenomenon that many people—especially women—experience at home and in the workplace. Equal parts laugh-out loud funny and poignant, Approval Junkie is one woman’s journey to realizing that seeking approval from others is more than just getting them to like you—it's challenging yourself to achieve, and survive, more than you ever thought you could.
