Download or read book Placemaker written by Christie Purifoy and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Placemaker is a call to tend our souls, our land, and our homes--to cultivate comfort, beauty, and peace in the places God has us. Images of comfortable kitchens and flower-filled gardens stir something deep within us--we instinctively long for home. In a world of chaos and conflict, we want a place of comfort and peace. In Placemaker, Christie Purifoy invites us to notice our soul's desire for beauty, our need to create and to be created again and again. As she reflects on the joys and sorrows of two decades as a placemaker and her recent years living in and restoring a Pennsylvania farmhouse, Christie shows us that we are all gardeners. No matter our vocation, we spend much of our lives tending, keeping, and caring. In each act of creation, we reflect the image of God. In each moment of making beauty, we realize that beauty is a mystery to receive. Weaving together her family's journey with stories of botanical marvels and the histories of the flawed yet inspiring placemakers who shaped the land generations ago, Christie calls us to cultivate orchards and communities, to clap our hands along with the trees of the fields, to step into our calling to create, to make a place in the place God made for us. Placemaker is a timely yet timeless reminder that the cultivation of good and beautiful places is not a retreat from the real world but a holy pursuit of a world that is more real than we know.

This book was released on 2020-02-19 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last 50 years, the Netherlands has undergone a process of massive secularisation, in terms of the decline of institutionalised religion. This study tests a wide range of explanations for this process, built on modernisation theory, with high quality survey data. In addition, despite modernisation and the rise of gender equality in the area of social structural location, a religious gender gap persists in the Netherlands with women being more religious than men. With a comprehensive model of social and psychological differences between Dutch men and women, this study contributes to an explanation for this gap.

Download or read book Kubrick's Hope written by Julian Rice and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2008-09-29 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been two common assumptions about Stanley Kubrick: that his films portray human beings who are driven exclusively by aggression and greed, and that he pessimistically rejected meaning in a contingent, postmodern world. However, as Kubrick himself remarked, 'A work of art should be always exhilarating and never depressing, whatever its subject matter may be.' In this new interpretation of Kubrick's films, Julian Rice suggests that the director's work had a more positive outlook than most people credit him. And while other studies have recounted Kubrick's life and production histories, few have offered lucid explanations of specific sources and their influence on his films. In Kubrick's Hope, Rice explains how the theories of Freud and Jung took cinematic form, and also considers the significant impression left on the director's last six films by Robert Ardrey, Bruno Bettelheim, and Joseph Campbell. In addition to providing useful contexts, Rice offers close readings of the films, inviting readers to note details they may have missed and to interpret them in their own way. By refreshing their experience of the films and discarding postmodern clichZs, viewers may discover more optimistic themes in the director's works. Beginning with 2001: A Space Odyssey and continuing through A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut, Rice illuminates Kubrick's thinking at the time he made each film. Throughout, Rice examines the compelling political, psychological, and spiritual issues the director raises. As this book contends, if these works are considered together and repeatedly re-viewed, Kubrick's films may help viewers to personally grow and collectively endure.

Book excerpt: The culmination of Kärkkäinen's multivolume magnum opus This fifth and final volume of Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen's ambitious five-volume systematic theology develops a constructive Christian eschatology and ecclesiology in dialogue with the Christian tradition, with contemporary theology in all its global and contextual diversity, and with other major living faiths--Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. In Part One of the book Kärkkäinen discusses eschatology in the contexts of world faiths and natural sciences, including physical, cosmological, and neuroscientific theories. In Part Two, on ecclesiology, he adopts a deeply ecumenical approach. His proposal for greater Christian unity includes the various dimensions of the church's missional existence and a robust dialogical witness to other faith communities.

Download or read book In the Image of God written by Shirley Mayhood and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-05-02 with total page 1104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We were created in the image of our Creator! It was a perfect and loving relationship, but when Adam and Eve chose evil over that relationship with their Creator, that image of God we were created with was lost to us.In our world today, many Christians are more attuned to the world than to God's Word. Many seem to have the attitude that because they are in the world, they must be like the world. But this world is not anything like God, and Christians need to come to the certain knowledge that they are in the world, but not of the world. We as God's kids are not to live in the image of a lost world careening into a dark and bottomless pit of pure evil.Jesus Christ became our atoning sacrifice so that you and I can return to that original image of God that we were created to be. This ought to be our goal in life: to be like God, to do our very best to live in the image of God.This book is a daily devotional of biblical attitudes, characteristics of Jesus Christ, the deep meaning and example of God's amazing precepts and loving actions.God gave us a book to show us His right and loving law, but when Jesus came, He condensed all of the Father's law into just two:Jesus said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." (Matthew 22:37-40)It is my sincere hope that this book of devotions will help all who read it to know God better, to love Him more, and to understand what the true image of God means.451

Many seek the truth about God from other men and women who have no personal relationship with God themselves. Friend, I have good news. God is love. He doesn’t have love, He is love, and we were created by love, for love, and this very same God of love desires agape for you!

This book was released on 2016-03-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A] sharply observed study . . . richly detailed portraits.”—Economist Somini Sengupta emigrated from Calcutta to California as a young child in 1975. Returning thirty years later as the bureau chief for The New York Times, she found a vastly different country: one defined as much by aspiration and possibility—at least by the illusion of possibility—as it is by the structures of sex and caste. The End of Karma is an exploration of this new India through the lens of young people from different worlds: a woman who becomes a Maoist rebel; a brother charged for the murder of his sister, who had married the “wrong” man; a woman who opposes her family and hopes to become a police officer. Driven by aspiration—and thwarted at every step by state and society—they are making new demands on India’s democracy for equality of opportunity, dignity for girls, and civil liberties. Sengupta spotlights these stories of ordinary men and women, weaving together a groundbreaking portrait of a country in turmoil.
