Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the jungles of Vietnam, where he shot a photo of "the loneliness and desolation of war" that won a Pulitzer Prize, to the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton, David Hume Kennerly witnessed and photographed most of the history-making moments of the last third of the twentieth century. As the millennium turned and he set out to cover his eighth presidential campaign, however, the veteran photojournalist sensed something missing. In his words, "I had the uneasy feeling that I couldn't focus only on the story at hand while bypassing the texture of life that surrounds it.... This time I wouldn't speed across that covered bridge to get to the big event on the other side, but instead I would slow down a bit, maybe even pause to take a picture of the bridge." Photo du Jour is Kennerly's visual diary of "the texture of life" at the start of the twenty-first century. As he traveled more than a quarter of a million miles across thirty-eight states and seven countries, Kennerly took a picture every single day in the year 2000, using just one camera and one lens. Some offer candid, behind-the-scenes glimpses of the men who would be president--John McCain, Al Gore, and George W. Bush. Most of the photographs, though, seek to capture not the big, historic moments but rather the ordinary, even whimsical moments when the essence of a person or a place reveals itself to the observer who takes the time and has the heart to really see. Travel with him from Beijing to Boston, Moose to Miami, and Whynot to Weimea in Photo du Jour, and you'll quickly discover that David Kennerly is just such an observer.

Book excerpt: This book covers new ground on the diffusion and transmission of geographical knowledge that occurred at critical junctures in the long history of the Silk Road. Much of twentieth-century scholarship on the Silk Road examined the ancient archaeological objects and medieval historical records found within each cultural area, while the consequences of long-distance interaction across Eurasia remained poorly studied. Here ample attention is given to the journeys that notions and objects undertook to transmit spatial values to other civilizations. In retracing the steps of four major circuits right across the many civilizations that shared the Silk Road, The Journey of Maps and Images on the Silk Road traces the ways in which maps and images surmounted spatial, historical and cultural divisions.

Book excerpt: Rediscover—or discover for the first time—the things that make you passionate in life Vital Signs is about what inspires passion and what defeats it. How we lose it and how we get it back. And ultimately it’s about the endless yet endlessly fruitful tug-of-war between freedom and domestication, the wild in us and the tame, our natural selves and our conditioned selves. Each chapter in Vital Signs will contain a core sample, an intimate biography of one of the strategies we employ to gain or regain our passion. The book also affirms the importance of courageous inquiry into dispassion—where we’re numb, depressed, stuck, bored—so the reader can recognize and change these tendencies in themselves.

Book excerpt: ". . . a wonderful teaching tool for those who are welcoming refugees into their community."—The New York Times With haunting echoes of the current refugee crisis this beautifully illustrated book explores the unimaginable decisions made as a family leave their home and everything they know to escape the turmoil and tragedy brought by war. This book will stay with you long after the last page is turned. From the author: The Journey is actually a story about many journeys, and it began with the story of two girls I met in a refugee center in Italy. After meeting them I realized that behind their journey lay something very powerful. So I began collecting more stories of migration and interviewing many people from many different countries. A few months later, in September 2014, when I started studying a Master of Arts in Illustration at the Academy of Lucerne, I knew I wanted to create a book about these true stories. Almost every day on the news we hear the terms "migrants" and "refugees" but we rarely ever speak to or hear the personal journeys that they have had to take. This book is a collage of all those personal stories and the incredible strength of the people within them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How This Book Came About This book is, in some sense, the soul, underlying an earlier book that I had written, a book about modern science, which had the title The Search for the Meaning of Space, Time and Matter. The book was written for people with interest in modern science. It had the subtitle Images from Many Travels. The subtitle of that earlier book and the final decision to write it had its origin in a restless wanderlust, which, in the last twenty years, has driven me irresistibly to travel to the most remote places on earth. I traveled into the Arctic, the waters between North Norway and Svalbard, to Tibet over the plateau to the foot of Mount Everest, to North India to the remote monasteries in the Ladakh, along the Silk Road around the Taklimakan Desert into Inner Asia, to Timbuktu at the edge of the Sahara, to the Antarctic, and to the Skeleton Coast in Namibia. These journeys were driven by the urge to somehow grasp the whole world and make it my own. It was the Brahma in me who is creating a world in himself, in his mind. It is Odysseus in me, Faustus, the restless, forever searching until his life dissolves. I had to wander the many roads that all led to the same place, that vastly complex unfolding essence of Being, in all its colors and textures and shapes. I had to go and see this wonderful tapestry of life that is of deep inner beauty, even in its squalor, its suffering and pain and the dirty ugliness that I saw on some of these travels. I had to wander to fully accept all that life is, into myself, to feel at home on the earth. That same kind of yearning had driven me in my youth to discover the mysteries of space, of time, and of matter. After WWII, at age sixteen, I had acquired rudimentary knowledge of Heisenberg’s and Einstein’s attempts to create that all-encompassing unified theory that captures the observed phenomena of space and the world of the elementary building blocks of matter. A sort of obsession to learn all that is known about these things 8 Kai Woehler accompanied me on my journey to study physics, spending some years in Heisenberg’s institute, and eventually, after circuitous routes, teaching physics at a graduate school for military officers at the California coast. The above-mentioned book then is somewhat of an amalgam of these two kinds of journeys during my life. Many dear nonscientist friends took an interest in that book, and I recommended to them to just read the first and the last chapters, which carry more of my personal reflections about our lives in this cosmos. The final impetus to write this separate book, which is in your hands, was the fact that, as an orderly, circumspect person, I had “put my worldly affairs in order” sometime ago under the title “The Kai-X-File,” containing instructions for the executer of my will, in the case of my departure. This file contains a letter, which was to be my farewell letter to my closer friends, to be sent instead of some standard obituary notice. The file contains many other writings, some short, others not so short, reflections about my life, writings, which did not have a good place in that first book, mentioned above. This then led to this book. It is a collection of thoughts, essays, some poems of my own, some other poems that were important to me, some of them German poems, which I have translated into English as I could, some dreams that had great meaning in my life. The above-mentioned farewell letter is now at the very end of this second book. The items in each chapter were collected over a span of time, and there are themes to which I returned often. So there are some duplications of “Kai’s sayings” in this book, but I will leave them as they are and hope you understand. I am somewhat arbitrarily terminating the collection now while I am still here and reasonably coherent, and I will share this collection with you, my friends, when there is a good time for this. And just a

Book excerpt: An exploration of echoes and resonances across two millennia of visual culture, this book brings together weird, wondrous, and unforgettable imagery in one stunning volume. A remarkable collection of over five hundred images, Affinities is a carefully curated visual journey illuminating connections across more than two thousand years of image-making. Drawing on a decade of archival immersion at The Public Domain Review, an online journal and not-for- profit project dedicated to exploring curious and compelling works from the history of art, literature, and ideas, this volume has been assembled from a vast array of sources: from manuscripts to museum catalogs, and ship logs to primers on Victorian magic. The images are arranged in a single captivating sequence that unfurls according to a dreamlike logic, through a play of visual echoes and evolving thematic threads—hatching eggs paired with early Burmese world maps, marbled endpapers meet tattooed stowaways, and fireworks explode beside deep sea coral. At once an art book, a sourcebook, and a kaleidoscopic visual poem, Affinities is a unique and enthralling publication that will offer something different on each visit. A compelling art object and visual experience in its own right, this collection provides a launchpad for further exploration and inventive engagement across all forms of visual culture and expression.

This book was released on 2019-07-18 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SCIVIAS (Know the Ways) is the story of the journey in which the humanity, or bright stars in Eve's womb, join with the stars in the sky; a possibility offered to each soul, to return back to the Light of the origins of the Earth. An experience belonging to Hildegard in her visions and narrated, in obedience to the voice of God, leaving behind her fears, in a precious manuscript where images make the story come alive. The complexity of the prophetic text is difficult for our present times to access, leaving the images enveloped in a kind of symbolism that is hard to decipher. A Journey into the Images of Hildegard von Bingen is born in the hopes of satisfying this desire for knowledge, revealing the Ways the title of the work promises, in a reading guided by images. The central pages present the 35 original-size miniature reproductions with alongside a key that easily illustrates the symbolic meaning and a concise description of the vision. These Plates that offer a grammar of symbols are followed by richly illustrated pages of rhetoric, a themed reading that crosses the entire work where the details of the figures are highlighted against the miniatures. Here each element of the images - colours, frames, forms, numbers - is not random and, after crossing the threshold, leads inside the work. All seems interrelated and connected in an admirable unitary design where the traveller may virtually enter thanks to an accurate 3D reconstruction. The numerous quotations in the text let us be accompanied on this journey by the living voice and figure of this Saint and Doctor of the Church, narrated in the initial Portrait, a real witness to the possibility of walking along the Ways.
