Book Synopsis Lives in Transition by : Slobodan Randjelovic
Download or read book Lives in Transition written by Slobodan Randjelovic and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the ongoing series of photobooks published with the Arcus Foundation and Emerson, Wajdowicz Studios on queer communities around the world, a stunning portrait of a community battling homophobia in Serbia In June 2001, Serbia witnessed its first gay pride parade in history in Belgrade's central square. It was a short-lived march, as an ultranationalist mob quickly descended on the participants, chanting homophobic slurs and injuring dozens. For years afterward, fear of violence prevented further marches, and when, in October 2010, the next pride march finally went ahead, it again devolved into violence as anti-gay rioters, firing shots and hurling petrol bombs, fought the police. It was only in 2014 that a pride march was held uninterrupted, albeit under heavy police protection. In Lives in Transition, photographer Slobodan Randjelovic captures the struggles and successes of twenty LGBTQ people living throughout Serbia—a conservative, religious country where, despite semi-progressive LGBTQ protection laws, homophobia fueled by religious authorities and right-wing political parties remains deeply entrenched. In a country where lack of employment opportunity and hostile families frequently drive queer people into poverty and isolation, these individuals have struggled to build a community that will offer solace, protection, and even joy. Lives in Transition portrays remarkable and inspiring resilience in the human struggle against a repressive social environment and demonstrates how friendship and community can help people shape their own futures. Lives in Transition was designed by Emerson, Wajdowicz Studios (EWS).

Book Synopsis Transitions to Sustainable Development by : John Grin
Download or read book Transitions to Sustainable Development written by John Grin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-05-26 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, there has been a growing concern about the social and environmental risks which have come along with the progress achieved through a variety of mutually intertwined modernization processes. In recent years these concerns are transformed into a widely-shared sense of urgency, partly due to events such as the various pandemics threatening livestock, and increasing awareness of the risks and realities of climate change, and the energy and food crises. This sense of urgency includes an awareness that our entire social system is in need of fundamental transformation. But like the earlier transition between the 1750's and 1890's from a pre-modern to a modern industrial society, this second transition is also a contested one. Sustainable development is only one of many options. This book addresses the issue on how to understand the dynamics and governance of the second transition dynamics in order to ensure sustainable development. It will be necessary reading for students and scholars with an interest in sustainable development and long-term transformative change.

Book Synopsis Image Blending Techniques and their Application in Underwater Mosaicing by : Ricard Prados
Download or read book Image Blending Techniques and their Application in Underwater Mosaicing written by Ricard Prados and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-04-05 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work proposes strategies and solutions to tackle the problem of building photo-mosaics of very large underwater optical surveys, presenting contributions to the image preprocessing, enhancing and blending steps, and resulting in an improved visual quality of the final photo-mosaic. The text opens with a comprehensive review of mosaicing and blending techniques, before proposing an approach for large scale underwater image mosaicing and blending. In the image preprocessing step, a depth dependent illumination compensation function is used to solve the non-uniform illumination appearance due to light attenuation. For image enhancement, the image contrast variability due to different acquisition altitudes is compensated using an adaptive contrast enhancement based on an image quality reference selected through a total variation criterion. In the blending step, a graph-cut strategy operating in the image gradient domain over the overlapping regions is suggested. Next, an out-of-core blending strategy for very large scale photo-mosaics is presented and tested on real data. Finally, the performance of the approach is evaluated and compared with other approaches.

Book Synopsis The Second Jewish Migration by : Ali Arslan, PhD
Download or read book The Second Jewish Migration written by Ali Arslan, PhD and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too often, when examining the history of Jews during the Ottoman period, schlars focus solely on the founding of Israel after World War II and the victimization of Palestinians. But its important to look at every dimension of Jewish life during this time. Ali Arslan, Ph.D., takes a broad view of Jewish/Ottoman history in this academic work, beginning with how the Jews of Western Europe were forced to leave the Ibeian Peninsula and found the Ottomans waiting for them with welcoming arms. The Ottomans saved them from oppression and paved the way for the Jews of Central and Eastern Europe to live more comfortable lives compared with those in Western countries. The Ottomans respected the Jewish way of life and allowed them to move freely within the empire. Both the Ottomans and the Jews should be commended for their productive collaboration at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. Their spirit of cooperation should be seen as a beacon of hope and a roadmap of how people today can overcome differences.
