Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the 2021 Vine Awards Art, chess, and an $87,000 pipe frame an inside look at the relationship between Dadaist artist Marcel Duchamp and chess Grandmaster George Koltanowski Spanning three decades, two continents, two world wars, and the international art and chess scenes of the mid twentieth century, Duchamp's Pipe explores the remarkable friendship between art world enfant terrible Marcel Duchamp and blindfold chess champion George Koltanowski. Artist and cultural historian Celia Rabinovitch describes each man's rise to prominence, the chess matches that sparked their relationship, and the recently discovered pipe that Duchamp gave to Koltanowski. This tale of genius and resilience offers fresh insights into the essence of the gift in the bohemian underground. Rabinovitch invites us to discover the chess wizard and a Duchamp slightly off pedestal--and ultimately more human.

Samuel Bak's provocative chess-inspired landscapes illuminate the waste of war in a profaned world, and its impact on the human spirit. Peopled by pawns and knights, rooks and bishops, kings and queens, Bak's vision of conflict from the ancient to the modern era deflates romantic notions of heroic combat. His shattered chessboards rise dramatically out of a barren terrain, recording a decline in human majesty even as he invites us to reconstrue more fruitful imaginings.""--BOOK JACKET. ""The Game Continues reproduces in full color a new series of 52 chess paintings by Bak. Holocaust scholar Lawrence L. Langer guides and enriches our understanding of this unusual artist's complex vision.""--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: lThe sacrifice is one of the most beautiful, rewarding and complex aspects of chess. During a game the decision to give up material in order to get an advantage is probably the most difficult one a player has to take. Often, you have to burn your bridges without being able to fully calculate the consequences. Risks and rewards are racing through your mind, fighting for precedence while the clock keeps ticking. Now is the moment, because after the next move the window for this opportunity may be closed. In this book Ivan Sokolov presents a set of practical tools that will help you to master the art of sacrifice. By concentrating on the aim you are trying to achieve, rather than on the opening you are playing or the piece you might be going to sack, he teaches you how to come to a reasonable risk assessment and how to trust your intuition. There is a separate part on seizing the initiative without actually giving up material. Ivan Sokolov has written an entertaining and instructive guide, packed with useful advice and lots of practical examples.

Book excerpt: A sumptuous compendium of Alexander Calder's chess works, with ephemera and archival materials This handsome volume celebrates Alexander Calder's fascination with the game of chess. It comprises two parts: the first features scholarly and experimental texts exploring such topics as Calder's relationship with Marcel Duchamp (who was famously obsessed with chess) and his involvement in the 1944 exhibition The Imagery of Chessat Julien Levy Gallery. Archival documentation, ephemera and reproductions of Calder's chess sets--including photographs of each chess piece and related works on paper--are also featured. The second part of the book presents The Knightmares Portfolio, an approximation of an unrealized publication conceived in 1944 but never published. It comprises 46 chess drawings by Calder inscribed with titles, alternate titles and puns by Duchamp, Mary Reynolds and Calder. Alexander Calder(1898-1976) settled in Paris in the late 1920s, and soon found himself at the center of the city's artistic avant-garde. There, he developed his seminal Cirque Calder, a performance artwork comprising dozens of miniature handmade objects, and a group of standalone figurative works in wire. In 1930, Calder shifted towards abstraction with his invention of the mobile--an abstract sculpture made of independent parts that incorporate natural or mechanical movement. Calder would continue to explore the possibilities of this visual language for the rest of his career, though eventually shifting to monumental constructions and public works.
