Book excerpt: The world is full of books about how to be rich. This is not one of them. Today, many of us are feeling the pinch - and being bombarded with portrayals of social media 'perfection' is making that pinch feel more like a punch. We may know that social media - with all its billionaires and beauty queens - is just a highlight reel. So why is it still making most of us feel so low? Comedian Shabaz Ali wants to help you see the funny side of social media again. Because while it looks nice to live up in an ivory tower, this book reminds us that it is much more fun to be part of the baying mob that surrounds it. This laugh-out-loud deep-dive into social media's ridiculously rich, will help you love your own penny-pinched, rough-around-the-edges, extraordinarily ordinary life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you Poor or Are you Rich? Who are you?It really doesn't matter what your religion is, or, for that matter if you believe in a deity. Not important. What is real is you. You are real.Your ideas are your own.Your true accomplishments are your own.Your demeanor is your own.Your thoughts are your own. (Others may have inspired your thoughts but, in the end, you are responsible for your thoughts).Your feelings are your own. (Others may have instigated your feelings, but, in the end, your feelings are your own). You can lie to yourself and you can lie to your friends;But...In the wee hours of the morning when you are all alone, your feelings of joy and your tears of disappointments are your own.In the end, your honesty and your integrity become your best friends. No more lies. You are exactly as you think you are.In the end, sooner or later, YOU must take a good and hard look at your thoughts, and you, and only you, must decide Who you are.Be still. be calm. RelaxListen to your heart. Analyze your thoughts. And, in your solitude, become your best self.Say... Feel... Think... and be...Affirm with conviction.I am.OTHER THOUGHTS OF MICRODAC: No. I have no idea who takes the time to read my rambling. I am just grateful to those who do. Today, I want to share a couple insights about money, what it is and what it does. Money is a common exchange. Its value is in what it does and as a yardstick for judging wealth. Rich people hoard money because it is what they do. Poor people hunger for money because it is what they do. In the end and when each is in the ground, the worms see not distinction. The caution here, though, is on how we feel about money. Our attitude towards money. That, the rich and the poor, controls totally: Our attitude. With me, I try my best not to envy the rich and their wealth. Collecting money is, in essence, no different that me collecting vases from thrift stores. I do what I do (As I suspect the rich does what he does) because I enjoy it; I enjoy shopping for a $2 vase. My joy is in the doing. So, envy like jealousy, I have found, is a total waste of time and energy. And, the results for the one who is envious or Jealous are the same. It is sort of like hating someone. When you hate someone, does the victim of your hate really cares? I doubt it, so, you occupy your soul with a feeling that is only hurting you. You compromise the growth of your enlightenment by a the useless feeling of hate. (Acting on hate, however, is another matter). Here's what I think when one lacks the wealth that is needed. One can either increase one's wealth or live with the constrains of the meager existence. Having had this experience, I know what I am talking about. It boils down to attitude and doing the best that you can.The common sense thing to do is to make your limited funds stretch in getting the things that you want. You use your ingenuity to acquire things of function rather than things of form. In other words, you get the best that you can afford, and not what you are told to get via marketing. For example (and this is a simple example): When you are a bit sluggish you know what to do: You drink two glasses of room-temperature (or warm water) followed by a cup of coffee or tea. The result is almost immediate. OR, you can purchase Polyethylene Glycol for about $20 - the same result. The question is this: What is the VALUE of $20 to you? Think about that when you think of money in terms of its use. Here's a suggestion: Use your imagination to make the best use of your money.Be creative and network. If having your own business is your goal. Then use what is offered and create your own empire. Please read this in jest. Read as if just one sentence will trip the imagination and an idea will be born; one that goes from the perception of being poor to the reallity of having all your needs met. And, of course, have fun with this. Enjoy the pictures.

Book excerpt: The real-life Nickel and Dimed—the author of the wildly popular “Poverty Thoughts” essay tells what it’s like to be working poor in America. ONE OF THE FIVE MOST IMPORTANT BOOKS OF THE YEAR--Esquire “DEVASTATINGLY SMART AND FUNNY. I am the author of Nickel and Dimed, which tells the story of my own brief attempt, as a semi-undercover journalist, to survive on low-wage retail and service jobs. TIRADO IS THE REAL THING.”—Barbara Ehrenreich, from the Foreword As the haves and have-nots grow more separate and unequal in America, the working poor don’t get heard from much. Now they have a voice—and it’s forthright, funny, and just a little bit furious. Here, Linda Tirado tells what it’s like, day after day, to work, eat, shop, raise kids, and keep a roof over your head without enough money. She also answers questions often asked about those who live on or near minimum wage: Why don’t they get better jobs? Why don’t they make better choices? Why do they smoke cigarettes and have ugly lawns? Why don’t they borrow from their parents? Enlightening and entertaining, Hand to Mouth opens up a new and much-needed dialogue between the people who just don’t have it and the people who just don’t get it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dream Hoarders sparked a national conversation on the dangerous separation between the upper middle class and everyone else. Now in paperback and newly updated for the age of Trump, Brookings Institution senior fellow Richard Reeves is continuing to challenge the class system in America. In America, everyone knows that the top 1 percent are the villains. The rest of us, the 99 percent—we are the good guys. Not so, argues Reeves. The real class divide is not between the upper class and the upper middle class: it is between the upper middle class and everyone else. The separation of the upper middle class from everyone else is both economic and social, and the practice of “opportunity hoarding”—gaining exclusive access to scarce resources—is especially prevalent among parents who want to perpetuate privilege to the benefit of their children. While many families believe this is just good parenting, it is actually hurting others by reducing their chances of securing these opportunities. There is a glass floor created for each affluent child helped by his or her wealthy, stable family. That glass floor is a glass ceiling for another child. Throughout Dream Hoarders, Reeves explores the creation and perpetuation of opportunity hoarding, and what should be done to stop it, including controversial solutions such as ending legacy admissions to school. He offers specific steps toward reducing inequality and asks the upper middle class to pay for it. Convinced of their merit, members of the upper middle class believes they are entitled to those tax breaks and hoarded opportunities. After all, they aren't the 1 percent. The national obsession with the super rich allows the upper middle class to convince themselves that they are just like the rest of America. In Dream Hoarders, Reeves argues that in many ways, they are worse, and that changes in policy and social conscience are the only way to fix the broken system.

Book excerpt: That was the simple yet groundbreaking question William T. Vollmann asked in cities and villages around the globe. The result of Vollmann's fearless inquiry is a view of poverty unlike any previously offered. Poor People struggles to confront poverty in all its hopelessness and brutality, its pride and abject fear, its fierce misery and quiet resignation, allowing the poor to explain the causes and consequences of their impoverishment in their own cultural, social, and religious terms. With intense compassion and a scrupulously unpatronizing eye, Vollmann invites his readers to recognize in our fellow human beings their full dignity, fallibility, pride, and pain, and the power of their hard-fought resilience. Book excerpt: Show off your outrageous disposable income with this amazing, ridiculous, opulent, luxurious manuscript. This book is perfect for: An item to show off on your #richkidsofinstagram feed A conversation starter for your next outrageous caviar laden 1,000 year old wine and cheese / single issue advocacy reception A coffee table book for your evil lair, island get-a-way, or fifth vacation home. The multi-millionaire who will not be shamed into responsibly, socially conscious uses of their money. A gift to a loved one, namely myself because of the royalties this book is worth. But seriously, this book is written as both a shameless capitalist endeavor and a social experiment. By a shameless capitalist spirit, I mean that we are supposed to be living in a new world, where the internet gives us an amazing opportunity to develop wealth in an entrepreneurial manner. However, everytime I wikipedia some famous internet billionaire, I find that they went to the absolute best schools in the nation, had a degree in computer science, and some start-up money from a family member to launch a website or product. Instead, I'm sitting here with a PhD in a social science, typing these words in an attempt to see if anything with a half-assed marketing plan will actually sell Now if you are a #richkidsofinstagram or trust-fund baby who wasted much of the opportunity you had in your elite schools, well, there will be a simple version of this book made available if you take enough pity upon me to buy it. As for the social experiment, perhaps this book functions as an avenue to see how foolish people can be on the internet. Perhaps this book will result in an amazing peer-reviewed article in a prestigious journal, thus eternally out of reach of any graduate student without access to a library with a specific set of journal subscriptions. Perhaps the social experiment is inverted, as I am already rich and just wanting something to talk about at my next decadent social extravaganza. Actually, more than any of the aforementioned reasons, the primary impetus for this book was to win a metaphorical bet with my wife.We are too poor to wager anything against each other, and the effort is pointless with a joint bank account, but good God almighty will I never shut up about this book and that bet if this book sells a single damn copy. If you've actually read this far, then great. You are a man/woman/alien/child who stole their parent's credit card and will hopefully click enough buttons to buy this book. However, instead of talking about what this book means for you, and your ever increasing vanity or need to feel completion, attainment, and psychological sense of security through the purchase of material goods with a socially constructed hierarchy, let's take a moment to talk about what the purchase of this book means for me. Actually, another moment, since I just used half of this description to talk about myself and my needs above. When you purchase the full paperback version of this book, you'll be providing me with a 2,000 dollar royalty (don't cheap out and go for the kindle version, that just shows you a "middle class"). What does that mean for me and my family? It means a lot actually: 10 months of my toddler's health insurance 2.5 months of my mortgage That 401k I never started A college fund, else my child will be eternally stuck making less than 10 dollars an hour or faking a disability for government benefits Does your facebook have a ton of people posting gofundme links for their health insurance? Probably not, because again, you have to be insanely rich to even buy this book. Well, consider this the classy version of a gofundme account, just on amazon, and written as a lackluster book that may or may not be complete garbage once you buy it.

Book excerpt: A Recommended Read from: Good Morning America • Good Housekeeping • Esquire • Shondaland • Atlanta Journal-Constitution • The Week • Lit Hub • Publishers Weekly An illuminating, poignant, and savagely funny examination of modern marriage from Ask Polly advice columnist Heather Havrilesky If falling in love is the peak of human experience, then marriage is the slow descent down that mountain, on a trail built from conflict, compromise, and nagging doubts. Considering the limited economic advantages to marriage, the deluge of other mate options a swipe away, and the fact that almost half of all marriages in the United States end in divorce anyway, why do so many of us still chain ourselves to one human being for life? In Foreverland, Heather Havrilesky illustrates the delights, aggravations, and sublime calamities of her marriage over the span of fifteen years, charting an unpredictable course from meeting her one true love to slowly learning just how much energy is required to keep that love aflame. This refreshingly honest portrait of a marriage reveals that our relationships are not simply “happy” or “unhappy,” but something much murkier—at once unsavory, taxing, and deeply satisfying. With tales of fumbled proposals, harrowing suburban migrations, external temptations, and the bewildering insults of growing older, Foreverland is a work of rare candor and insight. Havrilesky traces a path from daydreaming about forever for the first time to understanding what a tedious, glorious drag forever can be.
