Book excerpt: Welcome to Detroit, Michigan, home of the grittiest, illest, most hardcore, crime-infested, and poverty-stricken neighborhoods in the country. It’s sometimes referred to as the Murder Capital because of the huge murder rate that never ceases to surprise us, the Murder Mitten, or the Dirty Glove because of the state’s shape on the U.S. map. Detroit is home to many scholars, rappers, athletes, and concerned citizens, but the streets belong to those in the underworld—addicts, dealers, and the women who help run the show from behind the scenes: The Real Hoodwives of Detroit! No, you won’t see these ladies on any television show, but you will see them make appearances in court for their man’s hearing, or at the county jail on visiting day. You might even catch them riding shotgun, with a nine tucked in their Fendi bag, waiting to pop off and protect their men at any cost. And of course, they make appearances in the hood, twenty-four seven, three hundred and sixty-five days of the year. Follow Nikki, Tonya, Chloe, Mina, and Gucci as they ride you through Detroit, one city block at a time. Watch as the tales of the black and dangerous unfold right before your eyes. In Detroit, only the raw and real survive—living to see another day. These streets are known for breaking the weak and leaving them helpless. They aren’t made for everybody. Scared? You should be…WELCOME TO DETROIT!

Baseball is nostalgic in its essence, and I hope that I have captured that feeling in this book. the stories of the rise of many young hopeful ballplayers who had the talent and drive to make it to the big leagues and in some cases rise to the very pinnacle of success is what prompted me to write their stories. Over the years of my stint covering the Appalachian League, I witnessed a great many players make it to "The Show." If you are a fan of baseball, as I am, you will enjoy discovering the history of this talent-rich league as well as the biographies of the players and managers who passed through the Appy League on their way up the ladder. I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I did writing it.

This marathon-running, banjo-picking loner with a bad shoulder, glasses, and a law degree earns a spot on the hometown Gales, a perennial National League also-ran. Moses tries to the lead the Gales to baseball's Promised Land, the World Series. Along the way, he is assisted by a Japanese pitcher, who instills in him a fighting spirit, and a hypnotherapist, who helps him overcome emotional barriers to success. Green helps the team owner's wife discover her Jewish roots. And Green falls in love with the Gales' publicity director. In the final play of the season, Green grabs a handful of dirt to get a better grip on his bat. He remembers digging a hole at the beach when he was a little boy. When he dug deep enough, the hole filled with water from Lake Michigan. The feeling that he is going to come through fills him from some deep source, seemingly remote but immediate and limitless....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Afterword by Franklin S. Odo: The most important feature of Milton Murayama's brilliant All I Asking for Is My Body is the quality of the storytelling. It deserves thorough discussion and criticism among literary professionals and students. The work has a further genius, however, in its evocation of several major topics in modern Hawaiian history, specifically during the 1930s, the decade before United States involvement in World War II. I suggest that Murayama’s novel provides us with valuable insights into the worlds of language, sugar plantation history, and the second-generation Japanese Americans, the nisei. . . . Critic Rob Wilson noted: “Part of the accomplishment of the novel is that the language ranges from the vernacular to the literate and standard, and so reflects the cultural and linguistic diversity of Hawaii.” In the novel, Murayama uses standard English and pidgin. In real life, the narrator Kiyo explains, “we spoke four languages: good English in school, pidgin English among ourselves, good or pidgin Japanese to our parents and the other old folks.” The wonder is that Murayama emerged using any one of the languages well. For most, that experience proved to be an insuperable barrier to good creative writing. . . . All I Asking for Is My Body is the most compelling work done on the Hawaii nisei experience. Murayama understood his theme to be “the Japanese family system vs. individualism, the plantation system vs. individualism. And so the environments of the family and the plantation are inseparable from the theme.” Fortunately for us as readers, however, he understood that the story was the key ingredient; that anything less would simply add to the sociological study of the plantation and the Japanese family in Hawaii.

Book excerpt: Before Shohei Ohtani and Babe Ruth there was Robert Lee "Parisian Bob" Caruthers (1865-1911). A wunderkind pitcher and right fielder known throughout the country, he was the star on the mound for five league championships in 10 years, and one of two players in history--along with Ruth--to lead the Major Leagues in ERA+ (adjusted earned run average) and OPS+ (on-base plus slugging plus). Coming from a wealthy family, Caruthers had something other players didn't--leverage. This resulted in several holdouts, including one which took him to Europe. This first full-length biography rediscovers one of baseball's most interesting characters and first two-way stars.
