"Let the country but make the railroads, and the railroads will make the country." — Edward Pease During the mid-1800s, American railroads became the lifeblood of new communities in the West and brought new ways of life and means of commerce to rural communities. Railroads became the shining thread that tied together the tapestry of American life into a land of plenty. The Illustrated Dictionary of North American Locomotives explores the story of railroads and their motive power. Giant beasts of iron and steel once roamed the land. Their descendants still race across the country. This book charts the progress of motive power on America's railroads from 1830 until the present. Its 432 pages illustrate a wide variety of grand and humble locomotives from the steam powered Puffing Billy types of the "Early Days" chapter, to the mighty Allegheny class steamers that were used to haul coal for the American industry in the "Steam in Charge" chapter. Technical specifications are given for each engine type and the book is fully illustrated with both black & white and color photos. The book goes on to show the progress of Diesel Power, including the output of General Electric and General Motors electromotive division (EMD) from the 1920s to the present. Ultimately, the book also explores the Electric Power that powers so many of today's railways.

This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1901 by the merger of eight manufacturers, the American Locomotive Company eventually became the second largest in the United States, behind Baldwin. ALCO built over 75,000 engines, including some of the largest ever constructed, the ¿Big Boy¿ 4-8-8-4s created for the Union Pacific. Originally published in 1908, this 40-page pamphlet is illustrated with photos and diagrams. It includes text written by C.J. Mellin, the Chief Engineer of the Richmond Works and holder of a number of patents related to the articulated compound locomotive. This innovative design spread the locomotive¿s weight across multiple driving wheels of a relatively small diameter. As a result, engines of this type could operate on short-radius curves, while still providing enormous traction power

Book Synopsis American Passenger Trains and Locomotives Illustrated by : Mark Wegman
Download or read book American Passenger Trains and Locomotives Illustrated written by Mark Wegman and published by Voyageur Press. This book was released on 2008-11-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period from the 1890s to the mid-1950s is generally considered the “golden era of passenger rail travel in America. It was a time of celebrated locomotives and luxurious passenger service, a time when rail technology saw its greatest advances and railroads became the nation’s favored mode of transportation. These glory years come alive in American Passenger Trains and Locomotives Illustrated, 1889–1971. For this volume, author and illustrator Mark Wegman has researched original railroad drawings and in some cases even paint chips to render more than 160 profiles, front and top views, and interior layouts depicting the steam, diesel, and electric locomotives, along with passenger cars, of three dozen of the nation’s most celebrated trains of the golden age. Accompanying the author’s drawings are histories of each train, period photographs, postcards, menus, luggage stickers, vintage print ads, and detailed captions. The book is a lavishly appointed journey back in time to the bygone heyday of passenger-train travel.

Book Synopsis From Steam to Diesel by : Albert Churella
Download or read book From Steam to Diesel written by Albert Churella and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1998-08-03 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This overview of the leading locomotive producers in the United States during the twentieth century shows how they responded to a radical technological change: the replacement of steam locomotives by diesels. The locomotive industry provides a valuable case study of business practices and dramatic shifts in innovation patterns, since two companies--General Motors and General Electric--that had no traditional ties to locomotive production demolished established steam locomotive manufacturers. Albert Churella uses many previously untapped sources to illustrate how producers responded to technological change, particularly between the 1920s and the 1960s. Companies discussed include the American Locomotive Company (ALCo), the Baldwin Locomotive Works, the Lima Locomotive Works, Fairbanks-Morse, the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors, and General Electric. A comparative work of business history and the history of technology, the book is not a complete history of any locomotive builder, nor does it explore the origins of the diesel engine in great detail. What it does, and does superbly, is to demonstrate how managers addressed radical shifts in technology and production methods. Churella reveals that managerial culture and corporate organizational routines, more than technological competency per se, allowed some companies to succeed, yet constrained the actions of others. He details the shift from small-batch custom manufacturing techniques in the steam locomotive industry to mass-production methods in the diesel locomotive industry. He also explains that chance events and fortuitous technological linkages helped to shape competitive patterns in the locomotive industry.
