Questi sapevano valutare la forma delle ossa, degli organi e dei muscoli esattamente come i cerusici, ma in più disponevano degli strumenti per rappresentare il corpo in tavole anatomiche di grande verità. La mostra di Palazzo Poggi illustra in oltre 200 dipinti, disegni, sculture, incisioni e codici il rapporto di scambio tra scienza e arte, che permetteva al medico lo studio dei disegni fuori dall'obitorio e all'artista di acquisire nuove abilità nella rappresentazione plastica dei soggetti umani. L'esposizione procede dagli esordi della disciplina, dovuti al manuale di Anathomia compilato da Mondino sulla scorta dei modelli classici e arabi, al genio pratico e artistico di Leonardo. Documentato con otto disegni provenienti dalla Royal Library. Poi, nel XVI secolo, il sapere potrà contare su un nuovo strumento di diffusione e riproduzione sempre esatta in ogni copia: il libro a stampa. E il De humani corporis fabrica di Andrea Vesalio si gioverà di tavole realizzate dalla bottega di Tiziano. Ma il punto di partenza resta l'osservazione durante la dissezione del cadavere: come Padova, anche Bologna si dotava di teatri anatomici. E depongono a favore del grande significato sociale della lezione anatomica le opere che le gilde dei chirurghi olandesi commissionano tra Sei e Settecento a Aert Pietersz e Michial van der Meer. Di questo salto di qualità nella rappresentazione si giovano i teschi e le ossa che il Barocco dissemina sulle tele, nei temi della vanitas e del memento mori. Il percorso espositivo si conclude nelle stanze del Museo che ospitano le statue e i preparati anatomici in cera dell'Istituto delle Scienze.

Book excerpt: Socrates, Or On Human Knowledge, published in Venice in 1651, is the only work written by a Jew that contains so far the promise of a genuinely sceptical investigation into the validity of human certainties. Simone Luzzatto masterly developed this book as a pièce of theatre where Socrates, as main actor, has the task to demonstrate the limits and weaknesses of the human capacity to acquire knowledge without being guided by revelation. He achieved this goal by offering an overview of the various and contradictory gnosiological opinions disseminated since ancient times: the divergence of views, to which he addressed the most attention, prevented him from giving a fixed definition of the nature of the cognitive process. This obliged him to come to the audacious conclusion of neither affirming nor denying anything concerning human knowledge, and finally of suspending his judgement altogether. This work unfortunately had little success in Luzzatto’s lifetime, and was subsequently almost forgotten. The absence of substantial evidence from his contemporaries and that of his epistolary have thus increased the difficulty of tracing not only its legacy in the history of philosophical though, but also of understanding the circumstances surrounding the writing of his Socrates. The present edition will be a preliminary study aiming to shed some light on the philosophical and historical value of this work’s translation, indeed it will provide a broader readership with the opportunity to access this immensely complicated work and also to grasp some aspects of the composite intellectual framework and admirable modernity of Venetian Jewish culture in the ghetto.

Yet paintings didn’t always have titles, and many canvases acquired their names from curators, dealers, and printmakers—not the artists. Taking an original, historical look at how Western paintings were named, Picture Titles shows how the practice developed in response to the conditions of the modern art world and how titles have shaped the reception of artwork from the time of Bruegel and Rembrandt to the present. Ruth Bernard Yeazell begins the story with the decline of patronage and the rise of the art market in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as the increasing circulation of pictures and the democratization of the viewing public generated the need for a shorthand by which to identify works at a far remove from their creation. The spread of literacy both encouraged the practice of titling pictures and aroused new anxieties about relations between word and image, including fears that reading was taking the place of looking. Yeazell demonstrates that most titles composed before the nineteenth century were the work of middlemen, and even today many artists rely on others to name their pictures. They do so interweaving various paths, and various structures, in order to arrive at different destination points. Which temporalities, one may wonder. On the boundary between cinema and contemporary art, where boundaries actually no longer exist, the idea of temporality is affected by paths opened up in historical moments which are actually so recent as to be simply in front of our eyes. Video, for example, derived from television, has since been “overtaken” by the digital evolution, yet does not relinquish its domestic function: it re-creates itself in new forms. The same also applies to cinema. Art is certainly not limited to this, but, since it is determined by its technical form, in this it continually finds essence and continuity: thus a temporality emerges which is determined by technology and by technological change. Just as with the temporality determined by the spectator’s viewing experience, it reveals itself as being, in part, the personal essence of the subject. Therefore they are extended temporalities, since they are determined by the unique and unrepeatable combination of the length as predicted by the creator of the work, and the unpredictable time management of the observer of the work, sometimes bored, thoughtful, concentrated, patient... An extendable temporality.
