Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion of Liquid Fuel Sprays outlines the fundamentals of the combustion of sprays in a unified way which may be applied to any technological application. The book begins with a discussion of the general nature of spray combustion, the sources of liquid fuels used in spray combustion, biomass sources of liquid fuels, and the nature and properties of fuel oils. Subsequent chapters focus on the properties of sprays, the atomization of liquid fuels, and the theoretical modeling of the behavior of a spray flame in a combustion chamber. The nature and control of pollutants from spray combustion, the formation of deposits in oil-fired systems, and the combustion of sprays in furnaces and engines are elucidated as well. The text is intended for students undertaking courses or research in fuel, combustion, and energy studies.

Book excerpt: One-dimensional unsteady calculations to study the spray ignition process were performed first for a monodisperse fuel-air spray in front of a planar heated wall and later for polydisperse single-component fuel sprays. The effect of different droplet heating models was investigated and it is found that at certain equivalence ratios ignition delay time and energies can be smaller in the heterogeneous case than in the limiting gaseous premixed case. Because of the critical dependency of ignition upon the distance of the heat source to the nearest droplet, spray ignition criteria are not precisely defined by fuel type, droplet size distribution and equivalence ratio but a range of ignition delay times and ignition energies is found due to the probabilistic effect of droplet ignition. For polydisperse sprays it was found that ignition can be well correlated with an equivalent monodisperse spray by using a mean diameter based on the total surface area of the spray and not the Sauter-mean-diameter. the experimental part of the program was designed to verify the theoretical spray ignition description and should help in understanding the physics and chemistry of the process. it focused on the importance of transport mechanisms on individual fuel droplet ignition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed parametric study of the ignition of a monodisperse fuel-air spray in contact with a hot wall was conducted. The theoretical model was one-dimensional unsteady and employed a hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian numerical scheme. Effects of drop size, chemical kinetics, fuel-air ratios, fuel type and other parameters were examined. The results indicated the statistical character of the spray ignition, the existence of optimum droplet size and optimum fuel-air ratio for the minimum ignition delays. The study was extended to the polydisperse spray. The major conclusion was that the polydisperse results can be correlated with an equivalent monodisperse spray represented by a mean diameter based on the total spray surface area. The study of ignition for sprays flowing over a hot plate as initiated. The formulation and the numerical coding were completed. Currently the code is being employed to predict the ignition delays for the flowing sprays. Preliminary experiments were conducted to investigate the ignition of a single droplet stream along a heated surface. The results show an optimal distance from the surface for the droplet stream. It is speculated that this distance depends on the characteristic evaporation time, diffusion time and convective time inherent to the system. Experiments separating the effects are underway to investigate this interactive process. (Author).

Book excerpt: The utilization of mathematical models to numerically describe the performance of internal combustion engines is of great significance in the development of new and improved engines. Today, such simulation models can already be viewed as standard tools, and their importance is likely to increase further as available com puter power is expected to increase and the predictive quality of the models is constantly enhanced. This book describes and discusses the most widely used mathematical models for in-cylinder spray and combustion processes, which are the most important subprocesses affecting engine fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. The relevant thermodynamic, fluid dynamic and chemical principles are summarized, and then the application of these principles to the in-cylinder processes is ex plained. Different modeling approaches for the each subprocesses are compared and discussed with respect to the governing model assumptions and simplifica tions. Conclusions are drawn as to which model approach is appropriate for a specific type of problem in the development process of an engine. Hence, this book may serve both as a graduate level textbook for combustion engineering stu dents and as a reference for professionals employed in the field of combustion en gine modeling. The research necessary for this book was carried out during my employment as a postdoctoral scientist at the Institute of Technical Combustion (ITV) at the Uni versity of Hannover, Germany and at the Engine Research Center (ERC) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phenomenology of Diesel Combustion and Modeling Diesel is the most efficient combustion engine today and it plays an important role in transport of goods and passengers on land and on high seas. The emissions must be controlled as stipulated by the society without sacrificing the legendary fuel economy of the diesel engines. These important drivers caused innovations in diesel engineering like re-entrant combustion chambers in the piston, lower swirl support and high pressure injection, in turn reducing the ignition delay and hence the nitric oxides. The limits on emissions are being continually reduced. The- fore, the required accuracy of the models to predict the emissions and efficiency of the engines is high. The phenomenological combustion models based on physical and chemical description of the processes in the engine are practical to describe diesel engine combustion and to carry out parametric studies. This is because the injection process, which can be relatively well predicted, has the dominant effect on mixture formation and subsequent course of combustion. The need for improving these models by incorporating new developments in engine designs is explained in Chapter 2. With “model based control programs” used in the Electronic Control Units of the engines, phenomenological models are assuming more importance now because the detailed CFD based models are too slow to be handled by the Electronic Control Units. Experimental work is necessary to develop the basic understanding of the pr- esses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Task 1 an experimental study of the ignition of Jet-A fuel sprays by an isothermal hot surface was conducted in a vertical axisymmetric duct. In addition to measurements of the wall temperature necessary for ignition, local measurements of velocity, turbulence intensity, fuel concentration, and the fraction of fuel vaporized were measured in the boundary layer at surface temperatures just below that required for ignition. In Task 2 two combustion tunnel facilities were used to investigate the stabilization of aircraft fires. Results showed that the shape of a bluff-body flameholder affects its stability characteristics through its influence on the size and shape of the wake region. Another significant finding was that the flameholding properties of the single-vortex flow pattern are markedly superior to those of the double-vortex pattern. In Task 3 experimental studies were conducted on: (1) Entrainment of an external flow into a cavity, with a small opening or vent in a side wall, when there is a small flow through the cavity; and (2) Fluid dynamics and ignition and flame stability characteristics of a jet of gaseous fuel through a protrusion of different shapes and heights in the wall of a cavity with a small flow of air through the cavity.
