Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Said’s Orientalism, now more than fifty years old, has to be one of the most frequently cited books among academics in a wide range of disciplines, and the most frequently assigned book to undergraduates at colleges. Among the common questions raised in response to Said’s book: Did scholars in Western Europe provide crucial support to the imperialist, colonialist activities of European regimes? Are their writings on Islam laden with denigrating, eroticized, distorting biases that have left an indelible impact on Western society? What is the "Orientalism" invented by Europe and what is its impact today? However, one question has been less raised (or less has been done about the question): How were the Orientalist writings of European scholars of Islam received among their Muslim contemporaries? An international team of contributors rectify this oversight in this volume.

Book Synopsis Schools of Koranic Commentators by : Ignác Goldziher
Download or read book Schools of Koranic Commentators written by Ignác Goldziher and published by Harrassowitz. This book was released on 2006 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goldziher, the greatest Islamicist of his day, and one of the most profound and original scholars in Europe in an age that produced veritable giants in this . eld, is presented here with what he considered his great opus, first published in 1920 in Leiden. Since his study tour in the East, 1873-1874, he had such a command of Arabic so as to discuss matters of dogmatics, fiqh, poetry, and syntax with local scholars. The work is largely based on his study and translation of Arabic primary sources. He treats the evolution of the science of tafsir from its most elementary stage, the 'Uthmanic' recension, down to early twentieth century interpretations of Rashid Rida and Syed Ameer Ali, touching upon dogmatics, asceticism, mysticism as well as rationalism. The translator, an old hand at translating Goldziher, displays a sensible, pragmatic attitude towards the considerable problem presented by Goldziher's style.

Book Synopsis Orientalism, Gender, and the Jews by : Ulrike Brunotte
Download or read book Orientalism, Gender, and the Jews written by Ulrike Brunotte and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originating in the collaboration of the international Research Network “Gender in Antisemitism, Orientalism and Occidentalism” (RENGOO), this collection of essays proposes to intervene in current debates about historical constructions of Jewish identity in relation to colonialism and Orientalism. The network’s collaborative research addresses imaginative and aesthetic rather than sociological questions with particular focus on the function of gender and sexuality in literary, scholarly and artistic transformations of Orientalist images. RENGOO’s first publication explores the ways in which stereotypes of the external and internal Other intertwine. With its interrogation of the roles assumed in this interplay by gender, processes of sexualization, and aesthetic formations, the volume suggests new directions to the interdisciplinary study of gender, antisemitism, and Orientalism.

Download or read book Der Orient written by Lena Salaymeh and published by Wallstein Verlag. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imaginationen vom "Anderen": deutsche Orientbilder.
