It began in May 1989, on a hillside overlooking Lake Zurich in Switzerland, and arrives now in Salem Massachusetts 6,000 kilometers away and 10 years later, in its sixth incarnation, but still with a waterfront view (the Atlantic Ocean). In between, it has visited some picturesque views of other lakes and bays of the world: Palo Alto (1990 - San Francisco Bay), Stockholm (1993 - Baltic Sea), Vancouver (1994- the Strait of Georgia and the Pacific Ocean), and Sophia Antipolis I Nice (1996- the Mediterranean Sea). PfHSN is a workshop providing an international forum for the exchange of information on high-speed networks. It is a relatively small workshop, limited to 80 participants or less, to encourage lively discussion and the active participation of all attendees. A significant component of the workshop is interactive in nature, with a long history of significant time reserved for discussions. This was enhanced in 1996 by Christophe Diot and W allid Dabbous with the institution of Working Sessions chaired by an "animator," who is a distinguished researcher focusing on topical issues of the day. These sessions are an audience participation event, and are one of the things that makes PfHSN a true "working conference.

Book excerpt: The workshop from which these papers originate intended to present the state of the art within the High Speed Local Area Networks (HSLAN) area as well as to give directions for the solution of unsolved problems. Some of the most important questions were: - Which applications for HSLAN? - When will products appear on the market at a more reasonable price? - Which performance is required for connecting stations i.e. will the limited terminal capacity result in serious bottlenecks (as in some established lower speed LAN)? - Are HSLAN the adequate solution for LAN subnetwork interconnection? - Will interconnected HSLAN extend to metropolitan area networks (MAN)? - Will wideband ISDN and its associated PBX make HSLAN concepts obsolete? Results showed that there is enormous progress in concept development and in understanding of specific problems arising in the HSLAN environment. Performance aspects have become much clearer, too. There was a consensus that what the future needs for research and development in the HSLAN field is a change of direction from introduction of new schemes and access methods towards the important feature of gaining experience with pilot installations in a real environment. Furthermore, upcoming standards should be carefully investigated.

Book excerpt: This volume of the LNCS series contains the papers accepted for presentation at the Third IFIP international working conference on active networks (IWAN 2001). The workshop was held at the Sheraton University City Hotel, in Philadelphia USA, and was hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. Active networks aim to ease the introduction of network services by adding dynamic programmability to network devices such as routers, and making aspects of the programmability accessible to users. Active networks research has focused on the development and testing of active techniques, that enable dynamic programmability in a networked environment. These techniques have a wide variety of applications. At IWAN 2001 we aimed to bring together members of the various communities using active and related techniques, and provide a forum for discussion and collaboration, involving researchers, developers, and potential users. Papers presented at IWAN 2001 covered the application of active techniques to many aspects of network based communication, including active multicast, active QoS, active security, active GRIDs, and active management. In addition, there were papers on architectures, language, and API issues. Although there were only 22 submissions, the standard of the 10 accepted papers was very high. This indicated clearly a substantial amount of ongoing high quality research in active networking, despite the current unfavorable economic conditions in the telecommunications industry. The papers also demonstrated that the research is genuinely global, and justifies an international workshop of this type. We would like to thank all the authors who submitted their work.
