Book Synopsis A Philosophy of Walking by : Frédéric Gros
Download or read book A Philosophy of Walking written by Frédéric Gros and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2023-07-11 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “passionate affirmation of the simple life” explores how walking has influenced history’s greatest thinkers—from Henry David Thoreau and John Muir to Gandhi and Nietzsche (Observer) “It is only ideas gained from walking that have any worth.” —Nietzsche In this French bestseller, leading thinker and philosopher Frédéric Gros charts the many different ways we get from A to B—the pilgrimage, the promenade, the protest march, the nature ramble—and reveals what they say about us. Gros draws attention to other thinkers who also saw walking as something central to their practice. On his travels he ponders Thoreau’s eager seclusion in Walden Woods; the reason Rimbaud walked in a fury, while Nerval rambled to cure his melancholy. He shows us how Rousseau walked in order to think, while Nietzsche wandered the mountainside to write. In contrast, Kant marched through his hometown every day, exactly at the same hour, to escape the compulsion of thought. Brilliant and erudite, A Philosophy of Walking is an entertaining and insightful manifesto for putting one foot in front of the other.

God has designed us to win in life. The enemy sees your purpose early on. His mission is to destroy every aspect of your life. I know that it is rough out here in this world today with the enemy running rapid. But we all need to come together as one to stop the enemy in his tracks. Amen. The enemy is the negative force. He is the one that’s always putting obstacles in front of us in our lives today. Always have Father God deep in your spirit, your soul, and your mind. Always put Father God ahead of your life. Always put your family next and always have your fellow man’s back Always pray and have that mind-set to have God on your mind. Amen. God has given us each a purpose in life. It is embedded deep in our spirit; all we have to do is release it. Amen. God is the source of our well-being. All we need to do is keep Father God in our lives and in our hearts, and everything should be fine for us. Amen. God bless. I hope you get something positive out of The Enemy Will Try to Steal Your Purpose. Enjoy.
Book Synopsis I'm not a numbers person by : Selena Fisk
Download or read book I'm not a numbers person written by Selena Fisk and published by Major Street Publishing. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life in the 21st century dictates that you need to know your numbers and use them to improve your decision-making and enhance your impact. From organizing the home budget, tracking health, understanding social media metrics, to running multi-national, multi-million-dollar organizations, it is no longer acceptable to claim 'but I'm not a numbers person' and believe that it is someone else's job. Data is everywhere. Smart watches track our steps, heart rate, and blood-oxygen levels, social media platforms recommend people we might know and products we might like, and map applications on our phones suggest when we should leave home, taking into consideration where our next appointment is and what the traffic is like. Dr. Selena Fisk believes that the data-informed can use the numbers in conjunction with an understanding of contexts, people, and different situations, to lead change and make shifts in what they do. This book steps through the 'why' of data and the types of data we often see and use through three key areas: data literacy, data visualization, and data storytelling.

Book excerpt: The primary appeal that Boil the Frog will have, for most people grabbing it off the shelf or off the internet, will be the step-by-step guide on how to lose the weight you want to lose. However, this book will actually surprise you about how it dives deep into the very depths of your mind to find where you got lost and show you how to come back, even from addiction. It will show you how to find who you were before the world told you different and about why you behave a certain way, but most importantly, it will show you how you can fix it. Boil the Frog shows you how to strip all that away and become the person you were supposed to be, to be the best version of yourself. Take this book home for the weight loss, it really can help you with that, but keep it as a guide for life in general and pay it forward. Help others as it helped you, share your success, and together we can all become the best versions of ourselves.
Book Synopsis Walking in the European City by : Timothy Shortell
Download or read book Walking in the European City written by Timothy Shortell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sociologists have long noted that dynamism is an essential part of the urban way of life. However, walking as a significant social activity and crucial research method (in spite of its ubiquity as part of urban life) has often been overlooked. This volume considers walking in the city from a variety of perspectives, in a variety of places and with a variety of methods, to engage with the question of how walking can contribute to the sociological imagination and reveal sociological knowledge. Bringing together new research on sites across Europe, Walking in the European City addresses the nature of everyday mobility in contemporary urban settings, shedding light not only on the ways in which walking relates to other social institutions and practices, but also as a method for studying urban life. With attention to intersections of race and ethnicity, gender and class, as well as the manner in which processes of gentrification transform urban space, this book examines questions of access to public places, exploring the ways in which urban dwellers’ use of and relation to neighbourhood spaces are shaped by inequalities of status and power. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology, geography and anthropology with interests in urban studies, mobility and research methods.
Book Synopsis A Good Pair of Boots and A Road to Walk On by : C. H. Evers
Download or read book A Good Pair of Boots and A Road to Walk On written by C. H. Evers and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details the foot travels of a young impressionable boy in the middle of the last century. Being enticed by the call of the long winding road, he foot travel's Canada's landscapes in all provinces coast to coast. With this desire to explore his homeland, the boy seeks to experience the unique smells, tastes, and textures of every terrain, of every geographic location, needing to feel a belonging and welcome. This book will track his journey as he moves into adulthood, into the domesticity of a typical Canadian community, and into retirement. Initially innocent and trusting, he is confronted by a society that he sees as hypocritical and criminal and without a moral or social compass. Now as a young man raising a family he sets out to question the social re-engineering of the Canadian establishment and the apathy of his fellow countrymen bothers him deeply. Curious now, he sets out to investigate this troubling situation. Inquisitive and concerned, he approaches this task with the same vigour, determination, and sensitivity that he sustained through his teen years exploring his Canadian homeland. Now he finds that the re-engineering of his society does not allow for queries or legal protest. Wishing to understand and having an inquisitive nature, he sets out with intent and allows himself to be incarcerated, where he is introduced to Canada's criminal courts and justice system. His suspicions of corruption are confirmed. "However, his findings of this criminal activity are distorted by the compliant criminal media using fabrication and lies." The socially re-engineered community where the older man now lives accepts the media's distortions and inventions as truths and therefore self-evident. The reader of this book will be taken into a neighbourhood unremarkable on the face of it, but a community that sustains a situation that is toxic and unliveable for a man who only sought to feel at home and belong to what he feels could have been a greater country. It is at this point that the reader will come to the realization that they are complicit in this collective malaise, and that they are this man's community and neighbour. They will have seen the enemy and it is they, themselves.
