Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Xi Wu examines how national and transnational forces and discursive logic mediate international secondary school students’ educational routes and life trajectories. Drawing upon an ethnographic research program involving Chinese students in a Canadian international secondary school, Wu employs Ong’s notion of transnational cultural logics to examine students’ lives and how they flexibly and not-so-flexibly engaged in their learning and self-making in their transnational spaces. The book provides a comprehensive understanding of international students as agentic and socially regulated subjects in their transnational routes. These insights contribute to advancing curriculum and program improvements. Furthermore, Wu applies theoretical notions of "transnationalism" and "global and transnational cultural logics" to the examination of specific phenomenon and analyzes how cultural logics stemming from families, nations, and societies govern subjectivities in their actions and aspirations. This insightful book will be of interest to a wide range of education stakeholders, as well as scholars and researchers in comparative and international education.

Although many of the chapters focus on specific content or places, a transdisciplinary problem and project-based experiential critical pedagogy is an ultimate goal. This necessitates developing awareness, advocacy and action / engagement regarding issues of race, ethnicity, gender, ability, choice, and culture to promote equity and social justice. The stories included in this collection are those of educators in a variety of contexts, but always through a public education framing. The stories come from educators at all levels of public education who are currently practicing in one of the most diverse urban areas of the U.S. Their experiences serve to provide hope for transformational change in education where the priority is truly equity and social justice for all. The idea is to provide voices of these brave educators who are striving to address equity and social justice issues is schools, education, and society – on their teaching and in the students’ learning.

This book was released on 2013-07-26 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years, various approaches to validation have emerged in psychological and educational assessment research, which can be classified into traditional approaches and modern approaches. Traditional approaches view validity as a multicomponential concept including, for example, content, construct, and predictive validity, while modern approaches conceptualize it as a unitary concept evaluated through argumentation. Drawing on the modern approach, this book builds a validity argument for an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) listening test sample. The book provides some insights into the listening sub-skills that the test engages, the psychometric dimensionality of the test, variables that predict item difficulty parameters, bias across age, nationality, test experience, and gender, as well as predictive-referenced evidence of validity. A variety of techniques including the Rasch model and structural equation modelling are used to answer the research questions and to build a validity argument framework; this argument organizes the thematically related findings into a coherent treatment of the validity of the listening test. The book presents the first treatment of validity argument and related analytical tools in one volume and maps the psychometric/statistical analysis tools onto the validity argument framework. It also provides an extensive literature review of listening comprehension, validation, and psychometric modeling and proposes both methods for developing and validating self-assessment instruments and novel approaches to improving the quality of language assessments.
