Book excerpt: Discover the technology for the next generation of radar systems Here is the first book that brings together the key concepts essential for the application of Knowledge Based Systems (KBS) to radar detection, tracking, classification, and scheduling. The book highlights the latest advances in both KBS and radar signal and data processing, presenting a range of perspectives and innovative results that have set the stage for the next generation of adaptive radar systems. The book begins with a chapter introducing the concept of Knowledge Based (KB) radar. The remaining nine chapters focus on current developments and recent applications of KB concepts to specific radar functions. Among the key topics explored are: Fundamentals of relevant KB techniques KB solutions as they apply to the general radar problem KBS applications for the constant false-alarm rate processor KB control for space-time adaptive processing KB techniques applied to existing radar systems Integrated end-to-end radar signals Data processing with overarching KB control All chapters are self-contained, enabling readers to focus on those topics of greatest interest. Each one begins with introductory remarks, moves on to detailed discussions and analysis, and ends with a list of references. Throughout the presentation, the authors offer examples of how KBS works and how it can dramatically improve radar performance and capability. Moreover, the authors forecast the impact of KB technology on future systems, including important civilian, military, and homeland defense applications. With chapters contributed by leading international researchers and pioneers in the field, this text is recommended for both students and professionals in radar and sonar detection, tracking, and classification and radar resource management.

Such systems are called discrete event dynamic systems and are of a subject of immense interest in a variety of disciplines, which range from telecommunication systems and transport systems to manufacturing systems and beyond. There has always been an intense need to formulate methods for modelling and analysis of discrete event dynamic systems. Petri net is a method which is based on a well-founded mathematical theory and has a wide application. This book is a collection of recent advances in theoretical and practical applications of the Petri net method and can be useful for both academia and industry related practitioners.

Book excerpt: This book provides a real-time and knowledge-based fuzzy logic model for soft tissue deformation. The demand for surgical simulation continues to grow, as there is a major bottleneck in surgical simulation designation and every patient is unique. Deformable models, the core of surgical simulation, play a crucial role in surgical simulation designation. Accordingly, this book (1) presents an improved mass spring model to simulate soft tissue deformation for surgery simulation; (2) ensures the accuracy of simulation by redesigning the underlying Mass Spring Model (MSM) for liver deformation, using three different fuzzy knowledge-based approaches to determine the parameters of the MSM; (3) demonstrates how data in Central Processing Unit (CPU) memory can be structured to allow coalescing according to a set of Graphical Processing Unit (GPU)-dependent alignment rules; and (4) implements heterogeneous parallel programming for the distribution of grid threats for Computer Unified Device Architecture (CUDA)-based GPU computing.

At the beginning of the 1980's many saw 'robotics' as being something of a pana cea for those problems in the manufacturing industries which had been exacerbated by the world recession. Those working at the time in the field of robotics stressed that robots themselves were only part of the solution. Yet in many quarters the 'hype' for the new technology apparently knew few bounds, resulting, inexorably, in many industries painfully discover ing for themselves a new realism, closely followed by disillusionment. In its wider sense the term 'robotics' covers an extremely broad spec trum of technologies ranging from extremely flexible, highly sensory and integrated systems capable of handling a very diverse product range, through to comparatively inflexible, high volume systems which can merely handle slightly different variations of the same basic product. As a result of the one 'buzzword' referring to such a variety of actual system types, the disillusionment which started to become apparent during the early 1980's acted as something of a double edged sword. A given com pany might consider a particular robotics-based technological solution to its production problems, find that it was unsuitable, and so renounce all robotics approaches as inappropriate. Yet just because one position on that spectrum of technological solutions was unsuitable for the company should not have led them to assume that there was no other robotics solu tion that was appropriate.

Book excerpt: Fuzzy knowledge and fuzzy systems affect our lives today as systems enter the world of commerce. Fuzzy systems are incorporated in domestic appliances (washing machine, air conditioning, microwave, telephone) and in transport systems (a pilotless helicopter has recently completed a test flight). Future applications are expected to have dramatic implications for the demand for labor, among other things. It was with such thoughts in mind that this first international survey of future applications of fuzzy logic has been undertaken. The results are likely to be predictive for a decade beyond the millenium. The predictive element is combined with a bibliography which serves as an historical anchor as well as being both extensive and extremely useful. Analysis and Evaluation of Fuzzy Systems is thus a milestone in the development of fuzzy logic and applications of three representative subsystems: Fuzzy Control, Fuzzy Pattern Recognition and Fuzzy Communications.
