Book excerpt: Artificial intelligence (AI) can successfully help in solving real-world problems in power transmission and distribution systems because AI-based schemes are fast, adaptive, and robust and are applicable without any knowledge of the system parameters. This book considers the application of AI methods for the protection of different types and topologies of transmission and distribution lines. It explains the latest pattern-recognition-based methods as applicable to detection, classification, and location of a fault in the transmission and distribution lines, and to manage smart power systems including all the pertinent aspects. FEATURES Provides essential insight on uses of different AI techniques for pattern recognition, classification, prediction, and estimation, exclusive to power system protection issues Presents an introduction to enhanced electricity system analysis using decision-making tools Covers AI applications in different protective relaying functions Discusses issues and challenges in the protection of transmission and distribution systems Includes a dedicated chapter on case studies and applications This book is aimed at graduate students, researchers, and professionals in electrical power system protection, stability, and smart grids.

Book excerpt: This book presents an authoritative collection of contributions reporting on computational intelligence, fuzzy systems as well as artificial intelligence techniques for modeling, optimization, control and decision-making together with applications and case studies in engineering, management and economic sciences. Dedicated to the Academician of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Professor Janusz Kacprzyk in recognition of his pioneering work, the book reports on theories, methods and new challenges in artificial intelligence, thus offering not only a timely reference guide but also a source of new ideas and inspirations for graduate students and researchers alike. The book consists of the 18 chapters, presented by distinguished and experienced authors from 16 different countries (Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, China, R.N.Macedonia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Turkey, United States, Ukraine, and Vietnam). All chapters are grouped into three parts: Computational Intelligence and Fuzzy Systems, Artificial Intelligence Techniques in Modelling and Optimization, and Computational Intelligence in Control and Decision Support Processes. The book reflects recent developments and new directions in artificial intelligence, including computation method of the interval hull to solutions of interval and fuzzy interval linear systems, fuzzy-Petri-networks in supervisory control of Markov processes in robotic systems, fuzzy approaches for linguistic data summaries, first-approximation analysis for choosing fuzzy or neural systems and type-1 or type-2 fuzzy sets, matrix resolving functions in game dynamic problems, evolving stacking neuro-fuzzy probabilistic networks and their combined learning in online pattern recognition tasks, structural optimization of fuzzy control and decision-making systems, neural and granular fuzzy adaptive modeling, state and action abstraction for search and reinforcement learning algorithms. Among the most successful and perspective implementations in practical areas of human activity are tentative algorithms for neurological disorders, human-centric question-answering system, OWA operators in pensions, evaluation of the perception of public safety through fuzzy and multi-criteria approach, a multicriteria hierarchical approach to investment location choice, intelligent traffic signal control and generative adversarial networks in cybersecurity.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an increasing demand for dynamic systems to become more safe and reliable. This requirement extends beyond the normally accepted safety-critical systems of nuclear reactors and aircraft where safety is paramount important, to systems such as autonomous vehicles and fast railways where the system availability is vital. It is clear that fault diagnosis (including fault detection and isolation, FDI) has been becoming an important subject in modern control theory and practice. For example, the number of papers on FDI presented in many control-related conferences has been increasing steadily. The subject of fault detection and isolation continues to mature to an established field of research in control engineering. A large amount of knowledge on model-based fault diagnosis has been ac cumulated through the literature since the beginning of the 1970s. However, publications are scattered over many papers and a few edited books. Up to the end of 1997, there is no any book which presents the subject in an unified framework. The consequence of this is the lack of "common language", dif ferent researchers use different terminology. This problem has obstructed the progress of model-based FDI techniques and has been causing great concern in research community. Many survey papers have been published to tackle this problem. However, a book which presents the materials in a unified format and provides a comprehensive foundation of model-based FDI is urgently needed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about synergy in computational intelligence (CI). It is a c- lection of chapters that covers a rich and diverse variety of computer-based techniques, all involving some aspect of computational intelligence, but each one taking a somewhat pragmatic view. Many complex problems in the real world require the application of some form of what we loosely call “intel- gence”fortheirsolution. Fewcanbesolvedbythenaiveapplicationofasingle technique, however good it is. Authors in this collection recognize the li- tations of individual paradigms, and propose some practical and novel ways in which di?erent CI techniques can be combined with each other, or with more traditional computational techniques, to produce powerful probl- solving environments which exhibit synergy, i. e. , systems in which the whole 1 is greater than the sum of the parts . Computational intelligence is a relatively new term, and there is some d- agreement as to its precise de?nition. Some practitioners limit its scope to schemes involving evolutionary algorithms, neural networks, fuzzy logic, or hybrids of these. For others, the de?nition is a little more ?exible, and will include paradigms such as Bayesian belief networks, multi-agent systems, case-based reasoning and so on. Generally, the term has a similar meaning to the well-known phrase “Arti?cial Intelligence” (AI), although CI is p- ceived moreas a “bottom up” approachfrom which intelligent behaviour can emerge, whereasAItendstobestudiedfromthe“topdown”,andderivefrom pondering upon the “meaning of intelligence”. (These and other key issues will be discussed in more detail in Chapter 1.

Book excerpt: The safe and reliable operation of technical systems is of great significance for the protection of human life and health, the environment, and of the vested economic value. The correct functioning of those systems has a profound impact also on production cost and product quality. The early detection of faults is critical in avoiding performance degradation and damage to the machinery or human life. Accurate diagnosis then helps to make the right decisions on emergency actions and repairs. Fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) has developed into a major area of research, at the intersection of systems and control engineering, artificial intelligence, applied mathematics and statistics, and such application fields as chemical, electrical, mechanical and aerospace engineering. IFAC has recognized the significance of FDD by launching a triennial symposium series dedicated to the subject. The SAFEPROCESS Symposium is organized every three years since the first symposium held in Baden-Baden in 1991. SAFEPROCESS 2006, the 6th IFAC Symposium on Fault Detection, Supervision and Safety of Technical Processes was held in Beijing, PR China. The program included three plenary papers, two semi-plenary papers, two industrial talks by internationally recognized experts and 258 regular papers, which have been selected out of a total of 387 regular and invited papers submitted. * Discusses the developments and future challenges in all aspects of fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control * 8 invited and 36 contributed sessions included with a special session on the demonstration of process monitoring and diagnostic software tools
