The increased focus on productivity frequently makes maintaining competence a challenge for therapists. For therapists to maintain their competence, resources of time, money, and motivation are required. These resources must come not only from the therapists, but also the employer. Thus, there is a need to explore what role the employers are playing in facilitating continued competence. This study addresses three categories of competence which are: elements of competence, monitoring competence, and methods to promote competence. Variables for each category were identified from a literature review of topics related to competence. The data were gathered by obtaining written promotional materials from national and travel companies who employ occupational therapists. Data were extracted by identifying the variables, included in the three categories above, that these companies' discussed in their materials. Results of the study demonstrated that there is a very low rate for inclusion of competence related information in companies promotional material. Further research needs to be carried out to identify employer efforts to promote competence that are being performed, but not mentioned in promotional material. Assessing if this is a trend with all allied health professionals would be a logical next step to note similarities and differences across disciplines.
