Book excerpt: The Cedar Mountain and Dakota Formations are significant gas producers in the southern Uinta Basin of Utah. To date, however, predicting the stratigraphic distribution and lateral extent of potential gas-bearing channel sandstone reservoirs in these fluvial units has proven difficult due to their complex architecture, and the limited spacing of wells in the region. A new strategy to correlate the Cedar Mountain and Dakota Formations has been developed using core, well-log, and 3D seismic data. The detailed stratigraphy and sedimentology of the interval were interpreted using descriptions of a near continuous core of the Dakota Formation from the study area. The gamma-ray and density-porosity log signatures of interpreted mud-dominated overbank, coal-bearing overbank, and channel sandstone intervals from the cored well were used to identify the same lithologies in nearby wells and correlate similar stratal packages across the study area. Data from three 3D seismic surveys covering approximately 140 mi2 (225 km2) of the study area were utilized to generate spectral decomposition, waveform classification, and percent less-than-threshold attributes of the Dakota-Cedar Mountain interval. These individual attributes were combined to create a composite attribute that was merged with interpreted lithological data from the well-log correlations. The overall process resulted in a high-resolution correlation of the Dakota-Cedar Mountain interval that permitted the identification and mapping of fluvial-channel reservoir fairways and channel belts throughout the study area. In the future, the strategy employed in this study may result in improved well-success rates in the southern Uinta Basin and assist in more detailed reconstructions of the Cedar Mountain and Dakota Formation depositional systems.

Reservoir characterization and heterogeneity studies play an important role in better understanding reservoir performance to meet this industry goal. This study was conducted on the Boonsville Bend Conglomerate reservoir system located in the Fort Worth Basin in central-north Texas. The primary reservoir is characterized as highly heterogeneous conglomeratic sandstone. To find more potential and optimize the field exploitation, it's critical to better understand the reservoir connectivity and heterogeneity. The goal of this multidisciplinary study was to quantify the permeability heterogeneity of the target reservoir by integrating core, well log and 3D seismic data. A set of permeability coefficients, variation coefficient, dart coefficient, and contrast coefficient, was defined in this study to quantitatively identify the reservoir heterogeneity levels, which can be used to characterize the intra-bed and inter-bed heterogeneity. Post-stack seismic inversion was conducted to produce the key attribute, acoustic impedance, for the calibration of log properties with seismic. The inverted acoustic impedance was then used to derive the porosity volume in Emerge (the module from Hampson Russell) by means of single and multiple attributes transforms and neural network. Establishment of the correlation between permeability and porosity is critical for the permeability conversion, which was achieved by using the porosity and permeability pairs measured from four cores. Permeability volume was then converted by applying this correlation. Finally, the three heterogeneity coefficients were applied to the permeability volume to quantitatively identify the target reservoir heterogeneity. It proves that the target interval is highly heterogeneous both vertically and laterally. The heterogeneity distribution was obtained, which can help optimize the field exploitation or infill drilling designs. Book excerpt: This study describes the distribution and depositional environment of selected sandstone reservoirs in the Oligocene-Miocene fluvial-deltaic Talang Akar Formation (TAF), Delta (DLT) area1, Jambi Sub-Basin, South Sumatra Basin. Three-Dimension (3D) seismic data covering an area of 170 km2 and well logs from four wells are used. The area lies in an early Tertiary rift basin that was subjected to Plio-Pleistocene compression. Growth strata along extensional faults demonstrate that the TAF was deposited during active rifting and basin growth. Well logs (gamma ray and mud logs) show interbedded sandstone, shale and coal typical of a fluvial-deltaic and shallow marine setting. Based on the well logs, the sandstone layers are interpreted as mainly distributary channel fill facies. Two productive horizons defined by drill stem tests at two wells are mapped throughout the seismic volume, together with major faults and top basement. These two horizons are examined using amplitude and acoustic impedance maps. The amplitude maps are related to the character of the interface between the sandstone and the adjacent layers. They may also be affected by tuning effects. Acoustic impedance is related to the layer itself. Comparison of the acoustic impedance with the well logs shows good correspondence in the shallow section but a poorer match at depth. Maps of the reflection amplitude are compared with acoustic impedance along the horizons. Strong variations are visible which appear to be controlled by depositional features and are interpreted to be distributary channels. Emphasis is on features visible in both data sets. Discovered in 1944, the field is estimated to contain 357 million barrels of original oil in place (OOIP). Up to November 2009, 192 million barrels had been produced. The primary target is the Holt-Bryant sandstone reservoir. The field has undergone primary production (1944-1953), secondary waterhood recovery (1953-1980), and since November 2009 is now producing through tertiary CO2 hooding. Reservoir monitoring is being carried out to improve the reservoir characterization and recovery efficiency. Time-lapse seismic interpretation results of this study were the identification of CO2 flow paths within the reservoir. An identified time-lapse anomaly indicates CO2 is flowing from the Paluxy up to the more permeable Tuscaloosa, which is critical to the enhanced oil recovery project because it indicates the Paluxy is not being properly swept. The time-lapse seismic interpretation allowed for the identification of permeability baffles in the Paluxy reservoir. The identified areas with low relative permeability improved the interpretation and delineation of high quality sandstone CO2 flow paths. The interpreted CO2 flow paths and low permeability areas allowed for injection and production pattern alteration recommendations to improve oil recovery. Delhi Field is composed of distributary channel sandstones of the Lower Cretaceous Paluxy Formation. Spectral decomposition resulted in improved imaging and aided in the interpretation of distributary channel sandstones. Core, well logs, and seismic data were calibrated and used to interpret the depositional environment of the Paluxy, which was interpreted as a straight distributary channel system on a delta plain. The peak frequency and coherency volumes provided detailed sandstone thickness and width values, which will provide a framework to improve and expand the reservoir model and assist in well locations to improve sweep efficiency.

Book excerpt: The Clinton Sandstone is a tight, laterally discontinuous sandstone that was deposited in the Early Silurian in both deltaic and shallow marine environments. This interval is well known in the western Appalachian Basin as the reservoir rock for several large as well as historic oil and gas fields. In eastern Ohio exists the East Canton Oil Field (ECOF) which is primarily controlled by stratigraphic trapping and is estimated to have contained 1.5 billion barrels of oil in place. The presence of a thick regional carbonate above the Clinton Sandstone and advances in directional drilling make it an ideal candidate for horizontal drilling and completion. Located over the southeastern extent of the north south trending ECOF is a 400 square mile 3D survey of which a 40 square mile cutout will be used in this study. Within the 3D survey study area, are 3 wells that contain dipole sonic and bulk density log curves. At the base of the Clinton Sand exists an AVO anomaly seen in the log data by a large increase in shear wave velocity and a large decrease in Poisson's ratio. Using the available logs and seismic data, a pre stack inversion was generated for both compressional impedance, shear impedance and Poisson's ratio. Variations in seismic response of the Clinton Sandstone are closely related to porosity variability within the reservoir interval. Inverting for Poisson's Ratio has shown to be a useful tool for tight sand exploration in the Appalachian Basin as its relationship to clean sand is utilized to better understand and map reservoir variability within the ECOF boundaries as well as outside.

Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the quantity of data generated from monitoring technologies for subsurface operations such as permanent downhole sensors, as well as cross-hole and seismic surveys. Traditional models and techniques have proven inadequate for the purpose of extracting information from Big Data, in support of reservoir management and decision-making. In addition, the last decade has brought about increased exploration of unconventional reservoirs such as shale, due to more favorable economics resulting from advances in directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing. However, existing methods for describing induced and natural fracture characteristics in the subsurface are still evolving, and associated impacts on well performance are not completely understood. To attain optimal development of these resources, we require accurate characterization of fractures and reservoir characteristics from subsurface time-series and spatial data.The above challenges have the potential to be addressed by developing new Big Data analytic tools focused on identifying and characterizing complex subsurface features such as fractures, by exploiting pattern recognition and high-performance computing to uncover masked trends in large volumes of subsurface data. In support of this objective, real-time face detection techniques have been adapted to establish a pattern recognition methodology for feature extraction, statistical learning and probabilistic model evaluation. Under this framework, a set of easy-to-compute features based on Haar wavelets are extracted directly from the data, in order to serve as attributes for training a cascade of probabilistic tree-based ensemble classification models. As a use case for time-series data analytics, production data simulated from hydraulically fractured shale gas wells have been trained to identify candidates for re-stimulation treatment. Results demonstrate the viability of the proposed framework in recognizing favorable re-stimulation candidate wells using solely gas rate profiles, with improved accuracy over conventional tools such as type-curve matches. Secondly, the proposed methodology has been extended to help identify fractures in post-stack seismic data, which has been trained using raw seismic amplitude responses generated using a discontinuous Galerkin finite element seismic wave propagation model. Next, the approach has been validated using 3D post-stack seismic data from the Niobrara Shale interval within the Teapot Dome field in Wyoming. The applicability of the proposed framework has been demonstrated for identifying sub-seismic fractures, by considering the amplitude profile adjacent to interpreted fullbore microimage (FMI) well log data. The up-scaled spatial distribution of the predicted fractures shows agreement with existing geological studies and align with interpreted large-scale faults within the interval of interest.
