Book excerpt: The Identification of the Artisan and the Artist: The Proper Object of American Education is an influential work by Elizabeth Palmer Peabody and Nicholas Patrick Wiseman. Originally published in 1853, the book focuses on the value of manual labor and the importance of practical skills in education. The book argues that the traditional emphasis on intellectual development should be balanced with practical training in the arts and crafts. With a foreword by William Morris, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of education and the role of art in society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artisans played a central role in the European town as it developed from the Middles Ages onwards. Their workshops were at the heart of productive activity, their guilds were often central to the political and legal order of towns, and their culture helped shape civic ritual and the urban order. These essays, which have all been specially written for this collection, explore the relationships between artisans and their towns across Europe between the beginning of the early-modern period and the end of the 19th century. They pay special attention to the processes of economic, juridicial and political change that have made the 18th and early 19th centuries a period of such significance. Written by leading historians of European artisans, the essays question the myths about artisans that have long pervaded research in the field. The leading myth was that shared by the artisans themselves - the myth of decline and the belief in each generation that artisans in the past had inhabited a better age. These essays open up for debate the nature of artisanship, the way economic change affected craft production, the political role of artisans, the cultural identification of the artisans with work and masculinity, and the way changing urban society and changing urban structure posed threats to which the artisans had to respond.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Identification of the Artisan and Artist, the Proper Object of American Education: Illustrated by a Lecture of Cardinal Wiseman, on the Relation of the Arts of Design With the Arts of Production; Addressed to American Workingmen and Educators, With an Essay on Froebel's Reform of Primary Education Had the great Cardinal lived in America, he would not have felt this despair. It is the felicity of the constitution which protects the devel Opment of the American nationality, that it quenches no hope of a return (and with interest) of all that the past has intimated of the dignity of man. The events of the last ten years in America have taken away forever the disgrace of work and there is no motto more befitting every American than Ora et labora (pray and labor). The progress of science and its applications, by making slat/es qf flee greaf zasemz'éleforees of nature, are fast vindicating to human beings the pre rogative Of all that work which men only, by their individual intelli gence and skilled hands, can accomplish; or, in other words, it is making all human labor to rise into the degree of creative genius, which is the intellectual image of God in man. Fine Art, that is, architecture, sculpture, painting and music, are now the forms of this creative activity but not all, for every form of human activity, even in dividual formation of character, will become Fine Art when principles of eternal order and beauty, for the use and pleasure of men, shall be embodied in them. The life and manifest destiny Of the American nationality is to make every man creative on every plane of his life. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject History Europe - Other Countries - Modern Times, Absolutism, Industrialization, grade: 1,0, University of Oregon, language: English, abstract: Germany’s handicrafts and their institutional legacy highly influenced the social-economic development of their country. Their knowledge, know-how, and skills were important factors for Germany’s advancement to an economic powerhouse in the late nineteenth-century. But despite economic successes, an “anti-modern” attitude toward the new capitalist industry and its adherent working-class emerged during the last third of the nineteenth-century among the German artisans. This paper will show that the affiliation as well as the opposition of the German artisans toward other social and economic groups expressed a specific identity, both in social and economic terms. The core of the analysis will lay on the second half of the nine-teenth century and especially on the time period between the unification of Germany in 1871 and its short period of economic boom (Gründerzeit) and the end of the Great Depression in 1897. A subjective focus will reveal politically expressed differences in terms of values and preferences to the rising new economic order. Furthermore, it will be shown that the emerging working-class and their growing bond with journeymen compelled the economically prosper-ous artisans to reconsider their economic position within the German economy. Their redefinition as the Mittelstand was the answer to this development.

Being a senior developer all but requires awareness of how those skills, along with their expected technical counterparts, mesh together through a project's life cycle. This book walks you through that discovery by going over the entire life cycle of a multi-tier system and its related software projects. You'll see what happens before any development takes place, and what impact the decisions and designs made at each step have on the development process. The development of the entire project, over the course of several iterations based on real-world Agile iterations, will be executed, sometimes starting from nothing, in one of the fastest growing languages in the world—Python. Application of practices in Python will be laid out, along with a number of Python-specific capabilities that are often overlooked. Finally, the book will implement a high-performance computing solution, from first principles through complete foundation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crafting identities explores artisanal identity and culture in early modern London. It demonstrates that the social, intellectual and political status of London’s crafts and craftsmen were embedded in particular material and spatial contexts. Through examination of a wide range of manuscript, visual and material culture sources, the book investigates for the first time how London’s artisans physically shaped the built environment of the city and how the experience of negotiating urban spaces impacted directly on their distinctive individual and collective identities. Applying an innovative and interdisciplinary methodology to the examination of artisanal cultures, the book engages with the fields of social and cultural history and the histories of art, design and architecture. It will appeal to scholars of early modern social, cultural and urban history, as well as those interested in design and architectural history.
