Book Synopsis Taste and Odour in Source and Drinking Water by : Tsair-Fuh Lin
Download or read book Taste and Odour in Source and Drinking Water written by Tsair-Fuh Lin and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an updated evaluation of the characterization and management of taste and odour (T&O) in source and drinking waters. Authored by international experts from the IWA Specialist Group on Off-flavours in the Aquatic Environment, the book represents an important resource that synthesizes current knowledge on the origins, mitigation, and management of aquatic T&O problems. The material provides new knowledge for an increasing widespread degradation of source waters and global demand for high quality potable water. Key topics include early warning, detection and source-tracking, chemical, sensory and molecular diagnosis, treatment options for common odorants and minerals, source management, modelling and risk assessment, and future research directions. Taste and Odour in Source and Drinking Water is directed towards a wide readership of scientists, engineers, technical operators and managers, and presents both practical and theoretical material, including an updated version of the benchmark Drinking Water Taste and Odour Wheel and a new biological wheel to provide a practical and informative tool for the initial diagnosis of the chemical and biological sources of aquatic T&O.

Book Synopsis Diagnosing Taste and Odor Problems by : Stephen Booth
Download or read book Diagnosing Taste and Odor Problems written by Stephen Booth and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tastes and odors in tap water are the leading source of customer complaints. Although common tastes and odors in tap water are harmless, many customers perceive them as an indication the water could be unsafe to drink. This field guide provides all the information water utilities need to diagnose and remove objectionable tastes and odors at the tap. With this handy book, you will be able to: determine the source and cause of any taste or odor: raw water source, treatment plant, distribution system, or customer plumbing; provide good samples to your laboratory for testing; know how to control tastes and odors and prevent them from occurring, no matter what the cause; and make proper treatment choices to remove tastes and odors.

Book Synopsis Quantitative Analysis of Earthy and Musty Odors in Drinking Water Sources Impacted by Wastewater and Algal Derived Contaminants by : Danyang Wu
Download or read book Quantitative Analysis of Earthy and Musty Odors in Drinking Water Sources Impacted by Wastewater and Algal Derived Contaminants written by Danyang Wu and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study was to optimize a method to quantify compounds responsible for taste and odor problems (i.e., geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol) at very low concentrations that are in finished drinking water in the presence of wastewater and algal derived contaminants/interferents. A polydimethylsiloxane/divinylbenzene (PDMS/DVB) fiber was used for headspace-solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) to improve the extraction efficiency of the taste and odor compounds from model and raw source water samples. Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometery (GC/MS) in full scan mode was used to analyze the compounds adsorbed onto the fiber. The following parameters were optimized in order to enhance extraction efficiency: extraction temperature, extraction time, desorption time, sonication temperature, sonication time and GC/MS configuration and temperature program. After optimization, the method provided a linear response from 1 to 300 ng/L for 2-MIB, geosmin and camphor. The Method Detect Limits (MDLs) for this method were 0.81 ng/L, 0.42 ng/L and 0.84 ng/L for 2-MIB, geomin and camphor respectively, and the limit of quantification (LOQ) for 2-MIB, geosmin and camphor were 7.43 ng/L, 6.93 ng/L and 6.93 ng/L respectively. After HS-SPME optimization, raw source water samples were successful analyzed for taste and odor compounds with interfering analytes with similar mass charged fragments and elution times. This method proves that low detection limits as well as exact molecular confirmation for taste and odor compounds can be achieved in GC/MS full scan mode.
