Book excerpt: The American Association of Critical Care Nurses (2005) finds that meaningful recognition is a fundamental human need and a prerequisite to personal and professional development. While research has shown that recognition in the nursing profession is important, further research is needed to identify factors that lead to nurses' sense of dissatisfaction with recognition initiatives. According to Herzberg (Syptak, Marsland, & Ulmer, 1999), if an environment is created that promotes job satisfaction, one will develop employees that are motivated, productive and fulfilled. The purpose of this study was to identify these factors by identifying who needs to provide this recognition, when it should be provided, and in what manner it should be provided. A quantitative descriptive design was employed. The researcher-developed survey was distributed to nurses on a medical/surgical unit of a Midwestern pediatric hospital. The survey included demographic identifiers and was influenced by previous surveys and interviews by Herzberg (1959), Cronin and Becherer (1999), and Goode et al. (1993). Findings from this study revealed that the most meaningful recognition is received from co-workers in the form of private verbal feedback. It was also found that nurses desire recognition for their day-to-day work on the unit and their outstanding performance, optimal care, and positive attitude. Implications for practice include gaining a better understanding of nurses' feelings related to recognition, determining individualized needs in relation to recognition practices, and to improve or create recognition initiatives to fit the desires of particular groups of nurses. Recommendations are made for additional studies with improved sampling, different analysis techniques, or an alternate study design.

Book excerpt: Based on research projections, the healthcare industry will face a severe nursing shortage, creating a situation that may undermine the very quality of care in hospital settings as it relates to nursing recruitment and retention. Job dissatisfaction has been identified as a major factor contributing to the current problems in recruiting and retaining nurses. Grounded in the theories of Goleman, and Mayer, Salovey, and Caruso, the purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to determine the relationship between nurse leaders' emotional intelligence (EI) and followers' job satisfaction, and nurse leaders' EI and length of years (LOY) in healthcare, and followers' job satisfaction related to LOY in healthcare. Data from the nurse leaders were collected using the Mayor-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT), and data from the followers were obtained utilizing the Job Satisfaction Survey. The sample for this study included 31 critical-care nurse leaders and 178 followers, those who directly reported to the nurse leader within two, large, Level-I trauma centers in the Southwestern United States. The goal of this study was to provide empirical evidence to enable nurse leaders to develop new strategies through the use of EI and its reported ability to increase employee job satisfaction. Ultimately, there was no statistical significance between nurse leaders' EI and followers' job satisfaction or between nurse leaders' EI and LOY in healthcare. However, a strong, statistically significant relationship was identified relating to followers' job satisfaction and LOY in healthcare. The significance of the study was to understand nurse leader emotional intelligence and how this may influence the nursing staff's job satisfaction in an acute-care setting.

Book excerpt: Much evidence exists that nurses are leaving the public health sector for the private sector, or leaving the country to seek better working conditions and higher salaries. Studies conducted on the job satisfaction of nurses are proof that there is a need to know more about the factors that influence their sense of job satisfaction. Most of these studies focus on the general nursing context. Due to its unique circumstances, many studies abroad have identified the field of psychiatric mental health nursing to investigate job satisfaction of nurses. The minithesis is an attempt to fill the gap that exists in job satisfaction studies in South Africa of nurses in a provincial psychiatric hospital. The study was a cross sectional, correlational, survey design study. The instrument was a self-administered questionnaire, combining a quantitative questionnaire with one qualitative open-ended question. The study was conducted on nurses of all categories in a provincial psychiatric hospital in the Western Cape. Sixty- eight nurses participated in the study. The data was analyzed statistically using the SAS v9 statistical software and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The open-ended question was analyzed qualitatively. The results revealed that the participating nurses were dissatisfied with remuneration, recognition and appreciation, training and development, as well as benefits and incentives. Nurses were most satisfied with supervision and support, interpersonal relationships, and rendering patient care. The study identified the factors influencing job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction of nurses in a provincial psychiatric hospital. Recommendations were made based on the results of the research.

Book excerpt: Patient-centered, high-quality health care relies on the well-being, health, and safety of health care clinicians. However, alarmingly high rates of clinician burnout in the United States are detrimental to the quality of care being provided, harmful to individuals in the workforce, and costly. It is important to take a systemic approach to address burnout that focuses on the structure, organization, and culture of health care. Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout: A Systems Approach to Professional Well-Being builds upon two groundbreaking reports from the past twenty years, To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System and Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century, which both called attention to the issues around patient safety and quality of care. This report explores the extent, consequences, and contributing factors of clinician burnout and provides a framework for a systems approach to clinician burnout and professional well-being, a research agenda to advance clinician well-being, and recommendations for the field.
