Book excerpt: In addition to Phoenician, Greek, and Latin, at least four writing systems were used between the fifth century BCE and the first century CE to write the indigenous languages of the Iberian peninsula (the so-called Palaeohispanic languages): Tartessian, Iberian, Celtiberian, and Lusitanian. In total over three thousand inscriptions are preserved in what is certainly the largest corpus of epigraphic expression in the western Mediterranean world, with the exception of the Italian peninsula. The aim of this volume is to present the most recent cutting-edge scholarship on these epigraphies and on the languages that they transmit. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach which draws on the expertise of leading specialists in the field, it brings together a broad range of perspectives on the linguistic, philological, epigraphic, numismatic, historical, and archaeological aspects of the surviving inscriptions, and provides invaluable new insights into the social, economic, and cultural history of Hispania and the ancient western Mediterranean. The study of these languages is essential to our understanding of colonial Phoenician and Greek literacy, which lies at the root of their growth, as well as of the diffusion of Roman literacy, which played an important role in the final expansion of the so called Palaeohispanic languages.

At the same time that it presents a state-of-the-art analysis of the shrine of Dodona and contributes with a new theory concerning the function of some structures located in the sacred area, it also highlights the close connection between a settlement and its region. Book excerpt: Phoenician and Punic archaeology have long been overlooked by Mediterranean archaeologists, who focused their attention on Greek and Roman cultures. Although the Punic cities and their rural landscapes are to be found along the southern shores and on the islands of the western Mediterranean basin, comprehensive studies of these archaeological remains are virtually non-existent. This book investigates Punic rural settlement in the western Mediterranean by bringing together and comparing the currently dispersed existing evidence for rural Punic settlement. The core of the volume is accordingly made up by a detailed discussion of the archaeological evidence for Punic rural settlement from Sardinia, Sicily, Ibiza, mainland Spain and North Africa. Because agriculture and agrarian produce have always been assumed to have played a critical role in the Carthaginian colonial expansion, the connections between the various colonial contexts and the local characteristics of rural organisation are explored in detail in order to enhance our understanding of these colonial contexts. This in turn provides better insight into Carthaginian colonialism and local Punic rural settlement and their role in the wider Mediterranean context. By publishing this evidence and these interpretations in English, the authors hope to draw attention to Punic archaeology in general and to these rural studies in particular, and to situate them in the wider Mediterranean context of both classical Antiquity and Mediterranean archaeology.

Todos ellos son calificativos que cuadran con la fíbula Braganza, un broche de oro y esmalte, fechado en el siglo III a.C., que debió de pertenecer a un príncipe ibero que quiso representarse a sí mismo como héroe, desnudo, en la plenitud de la vida, con los atributos del guerrero, luchando contra un monstruo bicéfalo. La imagen es privilegio del aristócrata, para hacerse visible y respetable, para justificar su poder. La biografía más reciente de esta bellísima pieza de orfebrería helenística la sitúa, en un momento incierto del siglo XIX, en la colección de antigüedades de la familia real portuguesa de Braganza. Hacia 1950 pasa a una colección privada de Chicago. En los años setenta vuelve a Europa, donde se exhibe en Londres y Edimburgo, para ser discutida y admirada como objeto arqueológico raro, para el que los especialistas del momento no encuentran explicación; muchos de ellos la rechazan. Finalmente, en el año 2001 el Museo Británico la adquiere en subasta pública, y desde entonces forma parte de su exposición permanente. En el año 2007 la fíbula Braganza vuelve a viajar para reencontrarse con sus orígenes en la Península Ibérica. Será el motivo alrededor del que se monta la exposición "El Héroe y el Monstruo", en el Museo Arqueológico Nacional de Madrid. Este regreso supuso dar a conocer al público español un objeto perdido de su patrimonio histórico. Porque la fíbula Braganza no es solo algo bello, sino que encierra gran cantidad de información social, económica e ideológica de nuestro remoto pasado. Para desvelar esos misterios un grupo de especialistas españoles e ingleses se reunieron e intercambiaron opiniones, dudas y certezas. El resultado es este volumen que incluye una apasionante trama de amor; un sorprendente estudio arqueométrico; el análisis de los usos y modos guerreros en la Europa del siglo III a.C.; la discusión de una escena magistral... y algún cuento maravilloso.
