Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ideals, Aims and Methods in Education The New Educator's Library presents in a convenient form that is likely to appeal to many specialist teachers and others whose interest lies in a select few of the aspects of Education much of the subject matter of The Encyclopaedia and Dictionary of Education recently issued by the Publishers; in fact, the scheme is due in great measure to the suggestions of many readers of the latter work, pointing out the desirability of issuing in sectional form the authoritative contributions on the various subjects. It is hoped that these little books embodying as they do, the results of research and experience of educationists and others of high distinction in their subjects, will serve a really useful purpose to teachers, to students, and to many others connected with or interested in educational matters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Joyous Wayfarers: An Account of Some Modern Ideals in Education It is many years since the old schoolmaster found the Lady Jane absorbed in reading Plato while all the others of the houshold were hunting in the park - "reading Plato's 'Phaedo' in Greek, and that with as much delight as some gentleman would read a merry tale in 'Boccaccio.'" It is less than a year since a Liverpool boy was found reading "Samson Agonistes" in the train, and that with perchance even more delight than other boys were reading Comic Cuts and The Union Jack. Was it for an examination? Not so, shrewd reader, no more in his case than in hers. The reason, if the truth must be told, was in both cases the same. It was a schoolmaster, one "who teacheth me so gentlie" (as the gentle lady hath it), "so pleasantly, with such fair allurements to learning that I think all the time nothing whiles I am with him." The boy used not these exact words, but "words to the same defect." To hear this same schoolmaster talk his free mind on the things he has most at heart, to give us the values as he sees them of those things which count most for the future of the world, to watch him at work in his class and catch the tricks of the tool's true play - this has been my privilege, who have been invited to a private view, and I am right glad this privilege is so soon to be shared by all. "I wiss all their pleasure in the park is but a shadow to he pleasure that I find in reading"; so said the studious lady. So say I. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Ideas and Methods: For School Teachers and Students in Training; From a Practical Teacher's Note Book His book is not intended to supplant, but to supplement, the ordinary text-book on School Method. It is not a collection of ingenious wrinkles, but an attempt to give guidance to teachers and students in method on modern lines, in a way somewhat different from that found in the usual method books. It is theory and practice combined, and is the outcome of many years' teaching experience. The notes have been made from time to time, as circumstance and incident gave rise to them. There may be a little reiteration here and there, but that will serve to impress the points. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Teacher: Essays on Educatioal Aims and Methods The limits of space precluded Art, Music, and one or two other subjects with a claim to appear in the list of contents. English has two Essays devoted to it, as a sign of its capital importance, not yet always recog nized in the curricula of English schools. Citizenship is a new subject in our school time-tables; but in America, under the name of Civics, it has already an established place. The training of character eludes the binet-simon or any similar test, yet no volume on teaching can be con sidered complete that does not deal with it. It is given in different types of schools in different ways; but the underlying principles that are here presented are of general application. Happy the school where they inspire traditions and ideals, or poems like Clifton Chapel, potent to mould the adolescent life! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Aims and Educational Values This book is written for laymen who are interested in Education, as well as for professional students and teachers. It consists of a series of essays on contemporary educational problems. In the first five chapters the attempt is made to formulate the aims of elementary and secondary education, and to describe the scope and methods of an education that meets the demands of modern life, both in its provisions for the development of the individual and in its training for social service. The remaining chapters deal with the professional training of the college-bred teacher, and with the services of John Amos Comenius who, in the seventeenth century, advocated nineteenth-century educational reforms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Secondary Education In the construction of a book on the principles of second ary education one of two methods may be employed. A number of specialists may collaborate in the production of a book which consists of several more or less isolated treatises on various separate phases of secondary education. Such a method has many merits, but precludes the develop ment of a consistently constructive theory. On the other hand, when a single individual attempts to write a book covering a field as broad as that of secondary education, there are always two possible dangers: either the limitations of the individual may lead to superficial treatment and error, or unsupported personal opinion and bias may dominate. The first of these dangers is minimized when the writer refrains from attempting to deal with the details of teach ing appropriate to the various studies of the secondary school program and confines this attention to more funda mental principles. In this book the author deals with special studies only in connection with the broader matters of aims and values, together with the larger elements of method necessarily involved. A later volume in this series will deal with the principles of teaching in the secondary school and several volumes will deal with methods of teaching special subjects or groups of subjects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seventeenth Yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education, Vol. 2: The Measurement of Educational Products The National Association of Directors of Educational Re search present this Yearbook on Educational Measurement to the superintendents and teachers of American schools, hoping that it may prove of practical value to them in their work. Its purpose is to gather into one handy volume a rather complete statement of the various aspects of a new movement which seems destined to have a profound and permanent influence upon American education. Each chapter has been written by a different member of the Associ ation, and as in any new field of work, complete agreement in either theory or practice is not to be expected, so in this volume the careful reader will detect many evidences of healthy variations in ideals, aims and methods. However, it is believed that these differences are not serious enough to mar the unity of plan and content and that the book as a whole represents the best judgment of the Associ ation as to what information is of greatest practical worth. The Yearbook is issued in the hope that it may further the cause for which the Association stands - the promotion of educational re search in Amerlcan public schools. The editorial committee, on behalf of the Association, hereby gratefully acknowledges its indebtedness to the National Society for the Study of Education, whose cooperation has made the publica tion of a yearbook possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Educators and Their Ideals The present work is intended mainly for students of pedagogy in colleges or normal schools, teachers and other practical workers in educational fields, and those parents who take a special interest in the problems of education. It aims to give a general idea of the educational views of great philosophers and reformers in modern times, which form the basis of the present-day education in its ideals and practice. The author's endeavor has been to present the fundamental ideas of these thinkers and epoch makers in a concise and coherent form, and with a sympathetic interpretation. An academic criticism or amplification of any theories is purposely avoided; and very little is added to what each writer has said for himself, beyond that which was found necessary to make the connection of thought clearer and its significance more comprehensible to the reader. Thus the book practically consists of excerpts from the main works of the thinkers here chosen, which are either put in their original form or modified by the author so as to meet the extent and intent of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instruction in the Grades, Values and Methods: A Textbook for Normal Students and Young Teachers I shall not attempt to acknowledge my indebted ness to other writers on education. In fact, I could not, if I would. The ideas herein expressed are, now at least, so absolutely my own, that even though I may be only their foster father, I cannot distinguish them from my own Offspring. This much I can safely say, that no view set forth in this book is written simply because it conforms to somebody 's theory. Neither has newness, as such, been a part of my aim. I have merely attempted to collect, in an orderly fashion, such parts of my educational experience and reflection as I thought would be helpful to teachers and normal school students. I trust that, if the reviewer is moved to exclaim with Lessing, This book con tains much that is good and much that is new, he will not supplement it with the caustic comment that the good is not new and the new is not good. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Theory of Motives, Ideals, and Values in Education It becomes, therefore, a part of my obligation to dis cuss civilization, success, education, and progress, for until the terms are defined, neither agreement nor con elusion, neither satisfaction nor enlightenment is possi ble. I must, of course, take for granted certain matters, for education is not a basic science, but rather one that utilizes as its own postulates the conclusions of other sciences. Indeed, by some, the proposition that educa tion is a science is challenged. In this book, I do not discuss these postulates, though I state and, in some instances, illustrate them. The philosophy of education is not quite synonymous with the science of teaching, and the profession of edu cation is not at all coterminous with the art. Teaching is artistic education architectural, architectonic. From want of this distinction, there have been confusion and conflict. This distinction I draw, following it with various conclusions and applications that appear pertinent to the needs and conditions of this American democracy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy and Education: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Education The following pages embody an endeavor to detect and state the ideas implied in a democratic society and to apply these ideas to the problems of the enterprise of education. The discussion includes an indication of the constructive aims and methods of public education as seen from this point of view, and a critical estimate of the theories of knowing and moral development which were formulated in earlier social condi tions, but which still operate, in societies nominally democratic, to hamper the adequate realization of the democratic ideal. As will appear from the book itself, the philosophy stated in this book connects the growth of democracy with the development of the experimental method in the sciences, evolutionary ideas in the biological sciences, and the industrial reorganization, and is concerned to point out the changes in subject matter and method of education indicated by these developments.
