Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ideals, Aims and Methods in Education The New Educator's Library presents in a convenient form that is likely to appeal to many specialist teachers and others whose interest lies in a select few of the aspects of Education much of the subject matter of The Encyclopaedia and Dictionary of Education recently issued by the Publishers; in fact, the scheme is due in great measure to the suggestions of many readers of the latter work, pointing out the desirability of issuing in sectional form the authoritative contributions on the various subjects. It is hoped that these little books embodying as they do, the results of research and experience of educationists and others of high distinction in their subjects, will serve a really useful purpose to teachers, to students, and to many others connected with or interested in educational matters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Aims and Educational Values This book is written for laymen who are interested in Education, as well as for professional students and teachers. It consists of a series of essays on contemporary educational problems. In the first five chapters the attempt is made to formulate the aims of elementary and secondary education, and to describe the scope and methods of an education that meets the demands of modern life, both in its provisions for the development of the individual and in its training for social service. The remaining chapters deal with the professional training of the college-bred teacher, and with the services of John Amos Comenius who, in the seventeenth century, advocated nineteenth-century educational reforms. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 11 brings together all of Dewey's writings for 1918 and 1919. A Modern Language Association Committee on Scholarly Editions textual edition. Dewey's dominant theme in these pages is war and its after-math. In the Introduction, Oscar and Lilian Handlin discuss his philosophy within the historical context: The First World War slowly ground to its costly conclusion; and the immensely more difficult task of making peace got painfully under way. The armi-stice that some expected would permit a return to normalcy opened instead upon a period of turbulence that agitated fur-ther a society already unsettled by preparations for battle and by debilitating conflict overseas. After spending the first half of 1918-19 on sabbatical from Columbia at the University of California, Dewey traveled to Japan and China, where he lectured, toured, and assessed in his essays the relationship between the two nations. From Peking he reported the student revolt known as the May Fourth Move-ment. The forty items in this volume also include an analysis of Thomas Hobbe's philosophy; an affectionate commemorative tribute to Theodore Roosevelt, our Teddy; the syllabus for Dewey's lectures at the Imperial University in Tokyo, which were later revised and published as Reconstruction in Philosophy; an exchange with former disciple Randolph Bourne about F. Mat-thias Alexander's Man's Supreme Inheritance; and, central to Dew-ey's creed, Philosophy and Democracy. His involvement in a study of the Polish-American community in Philadelphia--resulting in an article, two memoranda, and a lengthy report--is discussed in detail in the Introduction and in the Note on the Confidential Report ofConditions among the Poles in the United States.

Educational methods include storytelling, discussion, teaching, training, and directed research. Education frequently takes place under the guidance of educators, but learners may also educate themselves. Education can take place in formal or informal settings and any experience that has a formative effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts may be considered educational. The methodology of teaching is called pedagogy. Education is commonly divided formally into such stages as preschool or kindergarten, primary school, secondary school and then college, university, or apprenticeship. A right to education has been recognized by some governments and the United Nations. In most regions, education is compulsory up to a certain age. This comprehensive book covers almost all aspects of education required for student of education. It covers the syllabi of various universities. The contents of the book encircle the basic understanding of education, formal-informal and non-formal education, aims and objectives of education, curriculums, peer education, education values, etc. This book can also be useful to the teachers and research scholars as a reference material.

Book excerpt: What is understanding and how does it differ from knowledge? How can we determine the big ideas worth understanding? Why is understanding an important teaching goal, and how do we know when students have attained it? How can we create a rigorous and engaging curriculum that focuses on understanding and leads to improved student performance in today's high-stakes, standards-based environment? Authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe answer these and many other questions in this second edition of Understanding by Design. Drawing on feedback from thousands of educators around the world who have used the UbD framework since its introduction in 1998, the authors have greatly revised and expanded their original work to guide educators across the K-16 spectrum in the design of curriculum, assessment, and instruction. With an improved UbD Template at its core, the book explains the rationale of backward design and explores in greater depth the meaning of such key ideas as essential questions and transfer tasks. Readers will learn why the familiar coverage- and activity-based approaches to curriculum design fall short, and how a focus on the six facets of understanding can enrich student learning. With an expanded array of practical strategies, tools, and examples from all subject areas, the book demonstrates how the research-based principles of Understanding by Design apply to district frameworks as well as to individual units of curriculum. Combining provocative ideas, thoughtful analysis, and tested approaches, this new edition of Understanding by Design offers teacher-designers a clear path to the creation of curriculum that ensures better learning and a more stimulating experience for students and teachers alike.
