Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a survey conducted by EURYDICE of 30 countries (i.e., the 15 European Union [EU] member states, the 3 European Free Trade Association/European Economic Area countries, and the 12 pre-accession countries) that reviewed progress in incorporating information and communication technology (ICT) into national education systems. The survey covers the incorporation of ICT into education systems at all levels, including initial and inservice teacher training, and sets out to answer the following questions: (1) What are the aims and strategies underlying policies to introduce ICT into education? (2) What are the specific measures implemented (e.g., national initiatives, action plans, pilot projects, etc.)? (3) How is responsibility for ICT in education shared among the various administrative levels? and (4) What public/private partnerships have been established or are planned in order to implement these initiatives on a broad scale? The report covers three areas of concern: a survey of aspects of the debate on how ICT should be brought into education, together with a review of EU initiatives in this area; a summary of types of action implemented in the 30 countries; and separate reports based on the replies of each country to the four questions above. Indeed the biennial meeting has never included these actualities, but the basic idea behind ICCHP, starting in 1989, was to focus on these fringe groups and to o?er a platform of exchange on all aspects of Human Computer Interaction and the usage of ICT for people with special needs.

A special feature of this edition is that it allows for interesting comparative analyses of sub-groups of countries, as many Asian, European Union, and former eastern-European countries, as well as the United States and Canada (among others), are included in the book. But it allows also for other than regional comparisons given that a number of newly industrialized countries (such as Brazil, Chile, Malaysia, and South Africa) are represented in this book, together with many OECD countries. This book is the result of the effort and hard work of the contributing authors, many of whom are the NRCs for IEA SITES in their respective countries. Special thanks must go to the Norwegian Royal Ministry of Education and Research and the Netherlands Kennisnet ICT OP School Foundation, both of which provided generous support for the preparation and dissemination of the book, to the Center for Information Technology in Education (CITE) of the University of Hong Kong, which assisted in the technical preparation of the manuscript, and to the IEA Secretariat, which facilitated the copyediting of the chapters.
