Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a survey conducted by EURYDICE of 30 countries (i.e., the 15 European Union [EU] member states, the 3 European Free Trade Association/European Economic Area countries, and the 12 pre-accession countries) that reviewed progress in incorporating information and communication technology (ICT) into national education systems. The survey covers the incorporation of ICT into education systems at all levels, including initial and inservice teacher training, and sets out to answer the following questions: (1) What are the aims and strategies underlying policies to introduce ICT into education? (2) What are the specific measures implemented (e.g., national initiatives, action plans, pilot projects, etc.)? (3) How is responsibility for ICT in education shared among the various administrative levels? and (4) What public/private partnerships have been established or are planned in order to implement these initiatives on a broad scale? The report covers three areas of concern: a survey of aspects of the debate on how ICT should be brought into education, together with a review of EU initiatives in this area; a summary of types of action implemented in the 30 countries; and separate reports based on the replies of each country to the four questions above. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Success and e?ciency are the latest standards and scales of our society. Virtual surroundings and communication rooms, electronic portals and platforms are pushing us into a new world of personal and professional interaction and c- peration. The network to subdue violence is fragile and crumbly, tradition is no longer a power of our community. What of leisure time, dreams, and fantasy? What of education in the family, at school and at university? Travelling round the world to develop yourself –how man becomes man: pleading for a new determination of the idea of education –a mission of past centuries inadequate nowadays? Regarding September 11th last year, the con?icts and confrontations round the globe, and events in our direct surroundings these questions seem to be a cry at least to re?ect upon what is happening around us and where we –all of us –still play an active role. An International Conference on Computers Helping People with Special Needs is like an island –is this a topic at all these days, is it worth disc- sing the area of ICT and the situation of people with disabilities, persons who are segregated from developing their personal and professional careers? Indeed the biennial meeting has never included these actualities, but the basic idea behind ICCHP, starting in 1989, was to focus on these fringe groups and to o?er a platform of exchange on all aspects of Human Computer Interaction and the usage of ICT for people with special needs.

Book excerpt: This compendium of papers documents educational ICT policies and practices in 37 countries, making it a valuable resource for understanding and comparing ICT-related national policy developments in education. We believe that this work offers a unique in-depth examination of the trends within major education systems and how they have adapted to and taken advantage of the challenges and opportunities posed by the new information and communication technologies. A special feature of this edition is that it allows for interesting comparative analyses of sub-groups of countries, as many Asian, European Union, and former eastern-European countries, as well as the United States and Canada (among others), are included in the book. But it allows also for other than regional comparisons given that a number of newly industrialized countries (such as Brazil, Chile, Malaysia, and South Africa) are represented in this book, together with many OECD countries. This book is the result of the effort and hard work of the contributing authors, many of whom are the NRCs for IEA SITES in their respective countries. Special thanks must go to the Norwegian Royal Ministry of Education and Research and the Netherlands Kennisnet ICT OP School Foundation, both of which provided generous support for the preparation and dissemination of the book, to the Center for Information Technology in Education (CITE) of the University of Hong Kong, which assisted in the technical preparation of the manuscript, and to the IEA Secretariat, which facilitated the copyediting of the chapters. We want to acknowledge especially the professional contribution of Paula Wagemaker, who has copyedited the entire volume. This copyediting work is especially critical and challenging, as many of the chapters were written by authors for whom English is a foreign language. We also want to express our appreciation to David Robitaille, chair of the IEA Publications and Editorial Committee, and his committee for the critical and constructive review of the manuscript.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and explains how digital technologies enter adolescents’ everyday life and learning in different contexts and environments. The book is based on research conducted in recent years in the Czech Republic, the results of which are set within a broad theoretical and international framework. The authors consider the theoretical and methodological anchoring of the topic, describing various approaches in an effort to comprehensively describe and understand the learning process of today’s pupils. They focus on ways to explore learning in the digital era, domestication of digital technology in families, and parents' approaches to digital technology. Attention is paid to adolescents’ competences and autonomy in the use of digital technologies, as well as their views on technology in their lives and learning. The authors summarize the most important results of the research, but also consider the options of empirical research and their own experience with the research of such a complex concept.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues for independent, critical research on education policy in the context of attacks on the quality and usefulness of educational research in general. It takes issue with the argument, promoted by government departments and agencies that education policy research should be limited to work that assists policy-makers. Against this position, the book advocates independent, critical research that scrutinizes policy in relation to its consequences for equality and social justice. It argues that practitioners and academic researchers should form a research community that develops its own knowledge base from which so-called evidence based policymaking in education may be assessed and challenged. The book offers guidance on the theoretical and methodological resources available to practitioners and others with an interest in doing research on policy and discusses some of the main issues and problems in doing policy research on education. It offers examples of research on policy at different system levels, pursuing themes such as globalization, changing governance of education, selection, choice and exclusion, managerialism and the feminisation of educational management. It argues for attention to the history of policy in education as a resource for understanding the present, and concludes with recommendations for future research in areas where contestation of official agendas is needed.
