Book excerpt: This publication aims to assist in the prevention of accidental exposures involving patients undergoing treatment from external beam or solid brachytherapy sources. It does not directly deal with therapy involving unsealed sources. The document is addressed to a diverse audience of professionals directly involved in radiotherapy procedures, hospital administrators, and health and regulatory authorities. The approach adopted is to describe illustrative severe accidents, discuss the causes of these events and contributory factors, summarise the sometimes devastating consequences of these events, and provide recommendations on the prevention of such events. The measures discussed include institutional arrangements, staff training, quality assurance programmes, adequate supervision, clear definition of responsibilities, and prompt reporting. In many of the accidental exposures described in this report, a single cause cannot be identified. Usually, there was a combination of factors contributing to the accident, e.g., deficient staff training, lack of independent checks, lack of quality control procedures, and absence of overall supervision. Such combinations often point to an overall deficiency in management, allowing patient treatment in the absence of a comprehensive quality assurance programme. Factors common to many accidents are identified and discussed in detail. The use of radiation therapy in the treatment of cancer patients has grown considerably and is likely to continue to increase. Major accidents are rare, but are likely to continue to happen unless awareness is increased. In this report, explicit recommendations on measures to prevent radiotherapy accidents are given with respect to regulations, education, and quality assurance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over recent years there has been a vast expansion in the variety of imaging techniques available, and developments in machine specifications continue apace. If radiologists and radiographers are to obtain optimal image quality while minimising exposure times, a good understanding of the fundamentals of the radiological science underpinning diagnostic imaging is essential. The second edition of this well-received textbook continues to cover all technical aspects of diagnostic radiology, and remains an ideal companion during examination preparation and beyond. The content includes a review of basic science aspects of imaging, followed by a detailed explanation of radiological sciences, conventional x-ray image formation and other imaging techniques. The enormous technical advances in computed tomography, including multislice acquisition and 3D image reconstruction, digital imaging in the form of image plate and direct radiography, magnetic resonance imaging, colour flow imaging in ultrasound and positron radiopharmaceuticals in nuclear medicine, are all considered here. A chapter devoted to computers in radiology considers advances in radiology information systems and computer applications in image storage and communication systems. The text concludes with a series of general topics relating to diagnostic imaging. The content has been revised and updated throughout to ensure it remains in line with the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) examination, while European and American perspectives on technology, guidelines and regulations ensure international relevance.

In addition to detailed chapters on patient selection and the use of imaging in diagnostics, treatment guidance, and implantation control, background chapters are included on related medical physics issues such as treatment planning and quality assurance. The results obtained with the different treatment options and the difficult task of salvage treatment are fully discussed. All chapters have been written by internationally recognized experts who for more than a decade have formed the teaching staff responsible for the successful GEC-ESTRO/EAU Prostate Brachytherapy Teaching Course.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atoms, Radiation, and Radiation Protection Discover the keys to radiation protection in the fourth edition of this best-selling textbook A variety of atomic and sub-atomic processes, including alpha, beta, and gamma decay or electron ejection from inner atom shells, can produce ionizing radiation. This radiation can in turn produce environmental and biological effects both harmful – including DNA damage and other impacts of so-called ‘radiation sickness’ – and helpful, including radiation treatment for cancerous tumors. Understanding the processes that generate radiation and the steps which can be taken to mitigate or direct its effects is therefore critical in a wide range of industries and medical subfields. For decades, Atoms, Radiation, and Radiation Protection has served as the classic reference work on the subject of ionizing radiation and its safeguards. Beginning with a presentation of fundamental atomic structure and the physical mechanisms which produce radiation, the book also includes thorough discussion of how radiation can be detected and measured, as well as guide-lines for interpreting radiation statistics and detailed analysis of protective measures, both individual and environmental. Now updated by a new generation of leading scholars and researchers, Atoms, Radiation, and Radiation Protection will continue to serve global scientific and industrial research communities. Readers of the fourth edition of Atoms, Radiation, and Radiation Protection will also find: Detailed updates of existing material, including the latest recommendations of the ICRP and NCRP Treatment of current physiokinetic and dosimetric models All statistics now presented in SI units, making the book more globally accessible Atoms, Radiation, and Radiation Protection is a foundational guide for graduate students and researchers in health physics and nuclear physics, as well as related industries.

This text covers, in a readable manner, advanced modern applications of the technique, how it can play a useful role in different areas of dosimetry and how to approach the challenges presented when working with optically stimulated luminescence. The six chapters are as follows: Introduction, including a short history of OSL and details of successful applications Theory and Practical Aspects Personal Dosimetry Space Dosimetry Medical Dosimetry Other Applications and Concepts, including retrospective and accident dosimetry, environmental monitoring and UV dosimetry Throughout the book, the underlying theory is discussed on an as-needed basis for a complete understanding of the phenomena, but with an emphasis of the practical applications of the technique. The authors also give background information and relevant key references on each method, inviting the reader to explore deeper into the subject independently. Postgraduates, researchers, and those involved with radiation dosimetry will find this book particularly useful. The material is both relevant and accessible for both specialists and those new to the field, therefore is fundamental to any academic interested in modern advances of the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Symposium on Radionuclides in the Food Chain, sponsored by the Interna tional Life Sciences Institute in association with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, was intended to bring together policymakers and other representatives of the food industry with radiation experts involved in measuring and assessing radioactivity in foodstuffs. The symposium was made timely by the problems arising from the nuclear reactor accident at Chernobyl, in the USSR, which brought out the lack of international agreement on guidance for responding to such radionuclide contamination of food and foodstuffs. The presentations by the radiation experts covered the sources of radionu clides-natural radioactivity, fallout from nuclear weapons tests, routine releases from nuclear facilities, and various nuclear accidents. The speakers represented a broad distribution in both scientific disciplines and international geographic origin. They summarized the available data on measurements and indicated the current procedures for assessing radiation exposure. It was hoped that the food industry representatives would bring out the problems posed to industry and governments by the presence of radioactivity in food.
