Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - A sumptuous celebration of photographer Andy Gott's unique portrait style, charting his 30-year career- With a foreword by Stephen Fry. Contributions from Kate Winslet and John Hurt. Appreciations by David Gandy, Brian May, Michael Palin, Ringo Starr, Dick van Dyck, Vivienne Westwood"His forté is the absolutely direct black and white portrait, full-on, sometimes grainy and remorseless in the detailing of complexion, sometimes mischievously witty and unexpected, always completely unforgettable." - Stephen Fry "Andy Gotts is a genius of his craft" - Tom Hanks In 1990 Andy Gotts, then a young photography student at Norfolk College of Arts and Technology, approached Stephen Fry at an event to ask him for a portrait. That brief meeting led to an even briefer photographic session (90 seconds), during which Andy realised he had discovered his photographic approach: "I cannot remember what I said to provoke the expressions and reactions I had in these 10 frames, but that was it... BOOM! ... my eureka moment. It was like a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders and I knew celebrity portraits were the way for me." Some 30 years later, Andy's unique portrait style - rapidly taken and often face-on - is admired for capturing the charisma of famed sitters such as Kylie Minogue, Meryl Streep, Harrison Ford and Kirk Douglas. Andy's chatty, quick-fire approach led Paul Newman to nickname him 'One Shot Gotts'. The photographs that Andy creates are naturalistic, eschewing the seductive technological traps of airbrushing and heavy styling. Andy Gotts was awarded an MBE in 2012 for his contribution to photography. This book is published in association with Maddox Gallery, London.

Book excerpt: After beginning his career as a photojournalist for a daily newspaper in southern California, Dan Winters moved to New York to begin a celebrated career that has since led to more than one hundred awards, including the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Magazine Photography. An immensely respected portrait photographer, Dan is well known for an impeccable use of light, colour, and depth in his evocative images. In Road to Seeing, Dan shares his journey to becoming a photographer, as well as key moments in his career that have influenced and informed the decisions he has made and the path he has taken. Though this book appeals to the broader photography audience, it speaks primarily to the student of photography--whether enrolled in school or not--and addresses such topics as creating a visual language; the history of photography; the portfolio; street photography; personal projects; his portraiture work; and the need for key characteristics such as perseverance, awareness, curiosity, and reverence. By relaying both personal experiences and a kind of philosophy on photography, Road to Seeing tells the reader how one photographer carved a path for himself, and in so doing, helps equip the reader to forge his own.

Book excerpt: "In 1967, a photojournalist named Baron Wolman met Jann Wenner and Ralph Gleason at a music conference. Wenner and Gleason told Wolman about a new publication they were starting. It would be about contemporary music and the musicians who made it. That magazine, Rolling Stone, would go on to become one of the most iconic magazines ever published and Baron Wolman was the first chief photographer. Happy Daze: From Hendrix to Haight-Ashbury, Festivals and Fashion: The Music, Moments and Magic that Made Up the Summers of Love is a book celebrating Baron Wolman's incredible archive of photographs from three incredible years in cultural history. From festivals such as Woodstock and Altamont, musicians including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead and moments including the Human Be-In and Death of Hippie marches, Wolman was on the visual front lines of an important period in the history of American society. At that moment it all came together for me as a photographer. I was invited to witness what was happening, going down, culturally and socially, and I was taking photos along the way...who would have guessed that fully five decades down the line, we would be here still talking about what an incredible time it was." -- provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: A stunning retrospective of noted celebrity and rock photographer Guy Webster’s work in 1960s Los Angeles. Visually striking and emotionally evocative, this unique volume includes both iconic and never-before-seen images as well as stories from Webster himself and the celebrities he worked with, including Brian Wilson, Michelle Phillips, and Ray Manzarek, among many others. “There was no handbook to navigating the sixties,” admits Guy Webster. It was a time of newfound creative freedom during which any guidebook, had there been one, would have quickly been discarded. From this experiential culture emerged icons who continue to inspire us to this day. Los Angeles was a polestar for the music and entertainment that gave expression to this remarkable time, and Guy Webster, Nikon in hand, bore witness to it all. Webster, an L.A. native, saw his childhood stomping grounds become the epicenter of a youthquake that not only shook up the music scene but also fashion, visual arts, and popular culture. With his controversial cover shot on the Mamas and the Papas’ first album, Webster firmly established his reputation as a photographer capable not only of capturing the emotional nuance of the era, but also of helping to define it. Musicians and actors—such as Simon & Garfunkel, Jack Nicholson, Bob Dylan, Jane Fonda, Jim Morrison, Natalie Wood, Janis Joplin, Raquel Welch, Jimi Hendrix, and Mick Jagger—are among the hundreds of personalities Webster shot before they were legends. In this definitive volume, their early creative worlds and intimate stories come alive on the page.

Book excerpt: * Documents 150 street artists actively producing work right now* Photographs by renowned photographer Claudelondon* Includes new artists as well as some better known street artists, such as Banksy, Invader, and Stik Street art is part of every cityscape. By street art, we mean the crazy and wonderful stencils, paste-ups, paintings and little sculptures that decorate our urban landscape, catching our eyes and surprising us with their beauty, humor or pithy comment on society. It is, however, ephemeral and the work can disappear very quickly or be damaged by the elements or vandalism. Through his website, Claudelondon has documented thousands of works by artists active in the city. Banksy has already become a household name and the success of his movie Exit Through the Giftshop has raised the profile of street art even further. On a state visit, Prime Minister David Cameron gave President Obama a painting by street artist Eine. The street art scene in London is one of the most vibrant in the world attracting not only local artists, but also artists from other countries. Street art galleries are popping up everywhere and attracting lots of visitors. Guided street art walks are appearing in major cities in the UK, the US and other countries. This book will cover over 150 artists and include around 275 photos. While including some of the more established street artists such as Eine, Invader, Banksy, Roa, David Walker and Swoon, the author also includes some of the new generation of street artists like Stik, Public Spirit, Xylo, Elbow Toe, Ludo, T. Wat among others who create wonderful quirky pieces that deserve a wider audience. A must have for anyone interested in street art, urban street culture or contemporary art.

Book excerpt: - A significant collection of textile works from a prolific yet often-overlooked designer, whose influence is felt to this day - Dresser stands out among his contemporaries, both for his efforts to make good designs affordable and his embracing of mechanisation - Written by a renowned expert on Christopher Dresser Dr Christopher Dresser is best remembered for his pioneering advances in design and associated technology. In the new industrial world of the nineteenth century, Dresser was the first designer to understand that machinery was a good servant but a poor master; he made it his business to understand how machines worked. His success gained him credibility. Dresser became a sought-after consultant to several textile manufacturers, most notably Barlow & Jones, Tootal, Warner & Sons, Turnbull & Stockdale, and Wardle, which allowed him to establish the largest design practice in Britain by 1870. Equally, it was his success in promoting textiles at affordable prices that attracted his popular following in the press. Unlike his contemporaries, he was interested in making designs available to everyone. However, Dresser is less celebrated in comparison to other designers of the era, such as William Morris, because Dresser was obliged to abandon this campaign to improve British taste due to an unexplained illness in the early 1880s. At the same time, Morris was expanding his business just as the Arts and Crafts movement was beginning to gain momentum. Despite being the first Victorian to address the decorative needs of all the population, there is a severe lack of appreciation for Dresser's work - whose influence can be found in many textiles that we take for granted today. This book redresses that balance, giving Dresser the monograph he deserves.
