Book excerpt: Byzantine and Russian Orthodox icons are perhaps the most enduring form of religious art ever developed--and one of the most mysterious. This book provides an accessible guide to their story and power. Illustrated mostly with Cretan, Greek, and Russian examples from the British Museum, which houses Britain's most important collection, the book examines icons in the context of the history of Christianity, as well as within the perspective of art history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Icon painting has reached its zenith in Ukraine between the 11th and 18th centuries. This art is appealing because of its great openness to other influences – the obedience to the rules of Orthodox Christianity in its early stages, the borrowing from Roman heritage or later to the Western breakthroughs – combined with a never compromised assertion of a distinctly Slavic soul and identity. This book presents a handpicked and representative selection of works from the 11th century to the late Baroque period.

This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, newly revised and updated, examines the Eastern Church's theology of icons chiefly on the basis of the acta of the Seventh Ecumenical Council of 787. The political circumstances leading to the outbreak of the iconclast controversy in the eighth century are discussed in detail, but the main emphasis is on the theological arguments and assumptions of the council participants. Major themes include the nature of tradition, the relationship between image and reality, and the place of christology. Ultimately the argument over icons was about the accessibility of the divine. Icons were held by the iconophiles to communicate a deifying grace which raised the believer to participation in the life of God.

Book excerpt: Icon painting, the ultimate expression of Orthodox Christian art, reached its zenith in the Ukraine between the 11th and 18th centuries. This book spans the entire period, showing the development of the style. The Ukrainian is a surprising synthesis of the traditions of eastern Byzantine art and the stylistic characteristics of Russian icon-painting. The introduction to this book explains the stages of development of icon-painting over five centuries and discusses the life and work of the masters of icon-painting. The magnificent, full-color photographs include complete iconostasises as well as individual icons painted in the Episcopal and monastic workshops. There are also icons painted in rural environments for home use, which are beautiful examples of naive art. Each painting is fully captioned with a complete description of the provenance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is mostly about one individual who worked for a large company and found himself on the wrong side of the companys management when corruption was discovered and exposed. This took place even though he had worked for and through the companys internal security forces, contracted corporate investigator firms, and the FBI. The book covers all levels and types of industrial crime, but concentrates more on executive crime. This is because it affects society the most, and it falls under the category of near-perfect crimes. This is because few are ever arrested, convicted, or do prison time even though they steal billions from all areas of society. The Wall Street crash was a prime example, and to add insult to injury, most got their bonuses on top of what they stole. This book continually tries to show its readers by example after example how easy it is for executives to steal billions and never even get questioned, forget about being arrested. Our criminal system is just not equipped or concerned about this type of crime. The ultimate concept being, crime in the executive world really pays big.

Book excerpt: This is one of those rare books whose influence will grow rather than diminish with the years. Icon and Idea is destined to take its place beside Ernst Cassirer's massive and difficult The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms as a basic work on the original, creative power of the human spirit as it is enacted as culture -- in myth, religion, science, art. Sir Herbert Read's book is neither massive nor difficult. It was first delivered as the Charles Eliot Norton Lectures 1953-1954, at Harvard. Text and pictures together illustrate the intellectual courage of a great art critic, aesthetician and intellectual theorist, as well as poet and novelist. Advancing beyond Cassirer's theory of the irreducible autonomy of culture, Read develops his theory that "the image always precedes the idea in the development of human consciousness." Having established this major thesis, Read goes on to elaborate it in a way that will interest not only students of art history and the social sciences but any reader interested in the right basis for education. In arguing the primacy of art work in human development, Read gives the reader a fine general education in the history and psychology of art

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Cort explores the narratives by which the Jains have explained the presence of icons of Jinas (their enlightened and liberated teachers) that are worshiped and venerated in the hundreds of thousands of Jain temples throughout India. Most of these narratives portray icons favorably, and so justify their existence; but there are also narratives originating among iconoclastic Jain communities that see the existence of temple icons as a sign of decay and corruption. The veneration of Jina icons is one of the most widespread of all Jain ritual practices. Nearly every Jain community in India has one or more elaborate temples, and as the Jains become a global community there are now dozens of temples in North America, Europe, Africa, and East Asia. The cult of temples and icons goes back at least two thousand years, and indeed the largest of the four main subdivisions of the Jains are called Murtipujakas, or "Icon Worshipers." A careful reading of narratives ranging over the past 15 centuries, says Cort, reveals a level of anxiety and defensiveness concerning icons, although overt criticism of the icons only became explicit in the last 500 years. He provides detailed studies of the most important pro- and anti-icon narratives. Some are in the form of histories of the origins and spread of icons. Others take the form of cosmological descriptions, depicting a vast universe filled with eternal Jain icons. Finally, Cort looks at more psychological explanations of the presence of icons, in which icons are defended as necessary spiritual corollaries to the very fact of human embodiedness.
