Book excerpt: Architectural drawings and models are instruments of imagination, communication, and historical continuity. The role of drawings and models, and their ownership, placement, and authorship in a ubiquitous digital age deserve careful consideration. Expanding on the well-established discussion of the translation from drawings to buildings, this book fills a lacuna in current scholarship, questioning the significance of the lives of drawings and models after construction. Including emerging, well-known, and world-renowned scholars in the fields of architectural history and theory and curatorial practices, the thirty-five contributions define recent research in four key areas: drawing sites/sites of knowledge construction: drawing, office, construction site; the afterlife of drawings and models: archiving, collecting, displaying, and exhibiting; tools of making: architectural representations and their apparatus over time; and the ethical responsibilities of collecting and archiving: authorship, ownership, copyrights, and rights to copy. The research covers a wide range of geographies and delves into the practices of such architects as Sir John Soane, Superstudio, Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc, Frank Lloyd Wright, Wajiro Kon, Germán Samper Gnecco, A+PS, Mies van der Rohe, and Renzo Piano.

Book excerpt: The localized attachment of circulating leukocytes to endothelium has been recognized as the cellular hallmark of the inflammatory response. This adhesive interaction, a necessary antecedent to the emigration of leukocytes from the blood into the tissues, is mediated by vascular adhesion molecules. Leukocyte Recruitment, Endothelial Cell Adhesion Molecules and Transcriptional Control: Insights for Drug Discovery outlines some of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of inflammation with contributions from top researchers. This volume provides an overview of three of these endothelial adhesion molecules, as examples of key mediators of leukocyte recruitment. It reviews the structure and regulation of these cell surface proteins and focus on the rapidly expanding field of transcriptional regulation of these inducible proteins, and closes with a discussion of drug discovery possibilities that target the regulation of leukocyte recruitment. This book will be of interest for any researchers, in academia or industry, looking for an overview of leukocyte recruitment or novel approaches to drug discovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brain edema is found in a wide variety of clinical disorders including stroke, intracerebral haemorrhage, subarachnoid haemorrhage, head injury, brain tumors and hydrocephalus. This volume brings together clinical and basic scientists from all over the world. Their expertise in the understanding of brain edema and shifts in brain water compartments has led to a further significant step in our understanding of those diseases characterized by brain edema. This book has also drawn on the expertise of the International Advisory Board of the Brain Edema Society, who have carefully summarized each section, thus providing an easy-to-read summary of the latest advances in each subject. The book is therefore much more than a collection of papers: it represents a critical appraisal and puts each paper into modern scientific context. The greatest advances have come from the rapid development of modern imaging techniques, especially with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Imaging can now produce "water maps” and "metabolic profiles” that bring brain metabolism and water content right into every clinic with access to MRI. This book provides the background knowledge to understand these pathophysiological changes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leukocytes play an integral role in the pathogenesis of different inflammatory disorders. Recent results indicate that leukocytes are also involved in conditions that had not formerly been associated with a cytotoxic effect by leukocytes. In 27 chapters by leading investigators, this book reviews recent research on leukocyte adhesion and microvascular kinetics. Detailed descriptions of adhesive glycoproteins expressed on the surface of leukocytes and endothelial cells are given together with summaries of the current state of leukocyte rheology, kinetics and entrapment in microvessels. Since leukocytes reach all organs, the mechanisms described in this volume may apply to a wide range of cardiovascular disorders. A variety of important inflammatory and circulatory disorders are discussed including cerebral and coronary ischemia, shock, atherogenesis, chronic venous insufficiency, gastric ulcer and diabetic retinopathy. New concepts about the etiology of cardiovascular complications are presented, with emphasis on molecular, cellular, and microvascular mechanisms. The current state of endogenous anti-adhesive and pro-adhesive mediators is summarized, including interventions against leukocyte activation and adhesion.

Book excerpt: The amount of information on the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease is growing rapidly. This is reflected by a continuous increase in the number of papers presented at international GI meetings. To make things more difficult for practicing physicians, there is also a large number of new clinical trials being published which require periodical critical reviews and recommendations. Faced with these issues, the scientific commitee of the Falk Symposium No. 140 decided to take a different approach and to apply a novel format that is reflected in the title of the Symposium: "Translation from basic research to clinical practice". This book contains the proceedings of that Symposium, held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, on May 7–8, 2004. The sections are designed so that they start with the information from basic sciences on different aspects of these complex diseases and further lead to their clinical implications. Special attention is paid to the mechanisms of actions of established drugs. The last two sections are clinically oriented and focus on the most difficult aspects of both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. This format provides state-of-the-art chapters by leading experts in the field and at the same time up-to-date information on the clinical application of the new knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preface During the past two decades, a significant international research exchange has taken place in order to understand the pathobiology of corneal diseases, and to develop more sophisticated treatments. For this purpose, many Japanese cornea specialists have been abroad to the United States, the United Kingdom, etc., to perform collaborative works in basic and clinical cornea research. As a result, many original concepts and thoughts have been produced from Japan, and some of them are now accepted world wide. Further to promote the international exchange of current knowledge and research on corneas in both health and disease, the First Annual Meeting of the Kyoto Cornea Club was held in Kyoto City on December I and 2, 1995. The goal of this meeting was to provide each speaker's updated knowledge that would be of value to all active corneal researchers who are interested in 'state-of-the-art' information from Japan. To achieve this objective fully, 41 selected Japanese cornea specialists registered as active participants in this meeting. James D. Zieske, PhD, from Schepens Eye Research Institute and the Department of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA, and Tadatsugu Taniguchi, PhD, from the Department of Immunology, Faculty of Medicine, Tokyo University, Japan, participated as special guests at this meeting, and both gave plenary lectures. This volume was created to provide each speaker's current opinions on the subjects they presented at this meeting, and also to provide a scientific reference for cornea research. We hope that the first issue will serve as a useful source of current knowledge and insight on Japanese cornea research. We wish to thank all those whose administrative help and/or assistance has made this issue possible; Takakazu Morita of Santen Pharmaceutical Co.
