Book Synopsis Iamblichus: On the General Science of Mathematics by : John Dillon
Download or read book Iamblichus: On the General Science of Mathematics written by John Dillon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-11 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the General Science of Mathematics is the third of four surviving works out of ten by Iamblichus (c. 245 CE–early 320s) on the Pythagoreans. He thought the Pythagoreans had treated mathematics as essential for drawing the human soul upwards to higher realms described by Plato, and downwards to understand the physical cosmos, the products of arts and crafts and the order required for an ethical life. His Pythagorean treatises use edited quotation to re-tell the history of philosophy, presenting Plato and Aristotle as passing on the ideas invented by Pythagoras and his early followers. Although his quotations tend to come instead from Plato and later Pythagoreanising Platonists, this re-interpretation had a huge impact on the Neoplatonist commentators in Athens. Iamblichus' cleverness, if not to the same extent his re-interpretation, was appreciated by the commentators in Alexandria.

The 56 Wilder articles here include 8 from Johnson's "The Platonist" and "Blibliotheca Platonica," with Wilder's series "Platonic Technology" which is a glossary of 265 terms important in Greek Philosophy. Other articles include "Bacchus the Prophet-God," "Paul the Founder of Christianity," "Hebrew and Christian Occultism," "The Religions of Ancient Greece and Rome," and "A Study of Plato's Phaedo." Wilder was one of the best students of Platonism and Ancient History of his time, and there is much information on the Eleusinian, Cabeirien, Bacchic/Dionysian, Egyptian and Mithraic Mysteries. He was editor of H.P. Blavatsky's "Isis Unveiled" and she held that only Wilder and Thomas Taylor had a deep intuition on Platonic subjects.

Book Synopsis The Lives of the Sophists by : Philostratus (the Athenian)
Download or read book The Lives of the Sophists written by Philostratus (the Athenian) and published by . This book was released on 1921 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PHILOSTRATUS AND EUNAPIUS. (a) Of the distinguished Lemnian family of Philostrati, Flavius Philostratus, 'the Athenian', was a Greek sophist (professor), c. A.D. 170-205, who studied at Athens and later lived in Rome. He was author of the admirable Life of Apollonius of Tyana (Loeb Nos. 16 and 17) and Lives of the Sophists (which are really impressions of investigators alert but less fond of scientific method and discovery than of stylish presentation or things known), one part concerning some older, the other some later 'provessors'. Other extant works of this Philostratus are Letters and Gymnasticus, but the Heroicus or Heroica is apparently by another Philostratus, and the Eikones (Imagines, skilful descriptions of pictures, Loeb No. 256) were probably by two Philostrati, on being the son of Nervianus and born c. A.D. 190, the other his grandson who wrote c. AD. 300. (b) The Greek Sophist and historian Eunapius was born at Sardis in A.D. 347, but went to Athens to study and lived much of his life there teaching rhetoric and possibly medicine. He was initiated into the 'mysteries' and was hostile to Christians. Lost is his historical work (covering the years A.D. 270-404) but for excerpts and the use of it made by Zosimmus, but we have his Lives of Philosophers and Sophists mainly contemporary whth himself. Eunapius is our only source of our knowledge of Neo-Platonism in the latter part of the fourth century A.D.
