O’Shaughnessy uncovers “industry secrets” on how colleges actually parcel out financial aid—and how even “average” students can maximize their share. Learn how to send your kids to expensive private schools for virtually the cost of an in-state public college...and how promising students can pay significantly less than the “sticker price” even at the best state universities. No other book offers this much practical guidance on choosing a college...and no other book will save you as much money! • Secrets your school’s guidance counselor doesn’t know yet The surprising ways colleges have changed how they do business • Get every dime of financial aid that’s out there for you Be a “fly on the wall” inside the college financial aid office • U.S. News & World Report: clueless about your child Beyond one-size-fits-all rankings: finding the right program for your teenager • The best bargains in higher education Overlooked academic choices that just might be perfect for you

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am the Lawman. Below is my creed. Like a religious creed, it is chanted, so I remember, in exacting detail, everything I believed. All my actions. I once had two milliseconds of love. Then they were removed from me. I can most assuredly attest that it's not better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. Love fueled my excruciating anger. And then anger's loyal bedfellow. Revenge. Love turned me into a hate-fueled monster. To the perpetrators, it was merely a game. Even if the authorities knew who the were, there were no lawmen to punish them. I was without hope, without retribution. I was strapped in a straitjacket with only memories to taunt my immobilized carcass. So I did what any brave soul would do. I went about the slow business of killing myself. Then as foretold by Edgar Allen Poe: ONCE upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore, While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping... It wasn't a Raven. It was a hovering prophet from the past. It had a message for me: "Son. She's buried alive. She's running out of time. Find her. She can do anything." I found her grave deep in the Atlantic Ocean where I would live during her revival. If she could do anything, I knew what I wanted her to do. Remove the straitjacket that bound me. I brought her back to life. We created marionette ghouls that were inspired by unnatural genetic instinct. They avenged my lost love. I labeled myself the Lawman and lived a villainous comic book hero's quest for revenge. We killed every last one of them. Playing the puppet master, we tweaked the strings of my unnatural creatures. Our monsters escaped and mutated into viral, roaming death with a zombie's lack of empathy. Revenge is not a cold meal. Revenge is a warm fillet cut with a butter knife; it's seasoned with blood for just the right amount of saltiness. The blood has to be fresh; it needs to be deoxygenated through the screams of its donor. I am the Lawman. That is my creed. My confession.

Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Worse yet, the worsening interference seems to be regularly occurring cycles. Frank Briar and Aerotrooper in the elite Aerospace Security Division of the world renown megacorporation, Central Solutions. When he and a small detachment of Aerotroppers are selected to assist in the troubleshooting of the second AMOs recovery mission, after surviving a life devoted to the trade of warfare and being deployed with a team of equally skilled warriors, Briar is certain his team will achieve a decisive victory. Book excerpt: In the New York Times bestseller Everything All at Once, Bill Nye shows you how thinking like a nerd is the key to changing yourself and the world around you. Everyone has an inner nerd just waiting to be awakened by the right passion. In Everything All at Once, Bill Nye will help you find yours. With his call to arms, he wants you to examine every detail of the most difficult problems that look unsolvable—that is, until you find the solution. Bill shows you how to develop critical thinking skills and create change, using his “everything all at once” approach that leaves no stone unturned. Whether addressing climate change, the future of our society as a whole, or personal success, or stripping away the mystery of fire walking, there are certain strategies that get results: looking at the world with relentless curiosity, being driven by a desire for a better future, and being willing to take the actions needed to make change happen. He shares how he came to create this approach—starting with his Boy Scout training (it turns out that a practical understanding of science and engineering is immensely helpful in a capsizing canoe) and moving through the lessons he learned as a full-time engineer at Boeing, a stand-up comedian, CEO of The Planetary Society, and, of course, as Bill Nye The Science Guy. This is the story of how Bill Nye became Bill Nye and how he became a champion of change and an advocate of science. It’s how he became The Science Guy. Bill teaches us that we have the power to make real change. Join him in… dare we say it… changing the world.

TRIZ is a set of tools for directing creative thinking based upon the study of patents. Breakthrough thinking is not left to creative inspiration. Instead, new and innovative ideas that solve simple to highly complex technical problems or create new inventions can be systematically derived. TRIZICS is an organized process for the practical application of TRIZ, it incorporates TRIZ tools into a simple step-by-step framework that includes the logic of structured problem solving, leverages TRIZ tools for root cause analysis, and directs the user to select the appropriate TRIZ tool to use during the problem solving process.

Book excerpt: Named one of Vulture’s Top 10 Best Books of 2020! Leftist firebrand Fredrik deBoer exposes the lie at the heart of our educational system and demands top-to-bottom reform. Everyone agrees that education is the key to creating a more just and equal world, and that our schools are broken and failing. Proposed reforms variously target incompetent teachers, corrupt union practices, or outdated curricula, but no one acknowledges a scientifically-proven fact that we all understand intuitively: Academic potential varies between individuals, and cannot be dramatically improved. In The Cult of Smart, educator and outspoken leftist Fredrik deBoer exposes this omission as the central flaw of our entire society, which has created and perpetuated an unjust class structure based on intellectual ability. Since cognitive talent varies from person to person, our education system can never create equal opportunity for all. Instead, it teaches our children that hierarchy and competition are natural, and that human value should be based on intelligence. These ideas are counter to everything that the left believes, but until they acknowledge the existence of individual cognitive differences, progressives remain complicit in keeping the status quo in place. This passionate, voice-driven manifesto demands that we embrace a new goal for education: equality of outcomes. We must create a world that has a place for everyone, not just the academically talented. But we’ll never achieve this dream until the Cult of Smart is destroyed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans have always sought to change their environment--building houses, monuments, temples, and roads. In the process, they have remade the fabric of the world into newly functional objects that are also works of art to be admired. In this second edition of his popular Existential Pleasures of Engineering, Samuel Florman explores how engineers think and feel about their profession. A deeply insightful and refreshingly unique text, this book corrects the myth that engineering is cold and passionless. Indeed, Florman celebrates engineering not only crucial and fundamental but also vital and alive; he views it as a response to some of our deepest impulses, an endeavor rich in spiritual and sensual rewards. Opposing the "anti-technology" stance, Florman gives readers a practical, creative, and even amusing philosophy of engineering that boasts of pride in his craft.
