Book excerpt: With the new developments in computer architecture, fairly recent publications can quickly become outdated. Computer Architecture: Software Aspects, Coding, and Hardware takes a modern approach. This comprehensive, practical text provides that critical understanding of a central processor by clearly detailing fundamentals, and cutting edge design features. With its balanced software/hardware perspective and its description of Pentium processors, the book allows readers to acquire practical PC software experience. The text presents a foundation-level set of ideas, design concepts, and applications that fully meet the requirements of computer organization and architecture courses. The book features a "bottom up" computer design approach, based upon the author's thirty years experience in both academe and industry. By combining computer engineering with electrical engineering, the author describes how logic circuits are designed in a CPU. The extensive coverage of a micprogrammed CPU and new processor design features gives the insight of current computer development. Computer Architecture: Software Aspects, Coding, and Hardware presents a comprehensive review of the subject, from beginner to advanced levels. Topics include: o Two's complement numbers o Integer overflow o Exponent overflow and underflow o Looping o Addressing modes o Indexing o Subroutine linking o I/O structures o Memory mapped I/O o Cycle stealing o Interrupts o Multitasking o Microprogrammed CPU o Multiplication tree o Instruction queue o Multimedia instructions o Instruction cache o Virtual memory o Data cache o Alpha chip o Interprocessor communications o Branch prediction o Speculative loading o Register stack o JAVA virtual machine o Stack machine principles

Book excerpt: ETAPS2000 was the third instance of the EuropeanJoint Conferenceson Theory and Practice of Software. ETAPS is an annual federated conference that was established in 1998 by combining a number of existing and new conferences. This year it comprised ?ve conferences (FOSSACS, FASE, ESOP, CC, TACAS), ?ve satellite workshops (CBS, CMCS, CoFI, GRATRA, INT), seven invited lectures, a panel discussion, and ten tutorials. The events that comprise ETAPS address various aspects of the system - velopment process, including speci?cation, design, implementation, analysis, and improvement. The languages, methodologies, and tools which support these - tivities are all well within its scope. Di?erent blends of theory and practice are represented, with an inclination towards theory with a practical motivation on one hand and soundly-based practice on the other. Many of the issues involved in software design apply to systems in general, including hardware systems, and the emphasis on software is not intended to be exclusive.

Book excerpt: The text contains a detailed and current presentation of the program analyses and transformations that extract the flow of data in computer memory systems. The emphasis is on a framework for the optimization of code for imperative programs and greater computer systems efficiency. In addition, the author shows that correctness of program transformations is guaranteed by the conservation of data flow. Professionals and researchers in software engineering, computer engineering, program design analysis, and compiler design will benefit from its presentation of data-flow methods and memory optimization of compilers.

Book excerpt: This volume is the proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Theo rem Proving in Higher Order Logics (TPHOLs 2000) held 14-18 August 2000 in Portland, Oregon, USA. Each of the 55 papers submitted in the full rese arch category was refereed by at least three reviewers who were selected by the program committee. Because of the limited space available in the program and proceedings, only 29 papers were accepted for presentation and publication in this volume. In keeping with tradition, TPHOLs 2000 also offered a venue for the presen tation of work in progress, where researchers invite discussion by means of a brief preliminary talk and then discuss their work at a poster session. A supplemen tary proceedings containing associated papers for work in progress was published by the Oregon Graduate Institute (OGI) as technical report CSE-00-009. The organizers are grateful to Bob Colwell, Robin Milner and Larry Wos for agreeing to give invited talks. Bob Colwell was the lead architect on the Intel P6 microarchitecture, which introduced a number of innovative techniques and achieved enormous commercial success. As such, he is ideally placed to offer an industrial perspective on the challenges for formal verification. Robin Milner contributed many key ideas to computer theorem proving, and to functional programming, through his leadership of the influential Edinburgh LCF project.

Book excerpt: Data security is an important requirement for almost all, if not all, information-oriented applications such as e-commerce, digital signature, secure Internet, etc. All these services use encrypted data. Cryptography is a milliner science that was the key to the secret of ancient Rome and a fundamental piece in the Second World War. Today, it is a star in the computation world. Several operating systems, data base systems or simple filling systems provide the user with cryptographic functions that allow controlled data scrambling. Modern cryptology, which is the basis of information security techniques, started in the late 1970's and developed in the 1980's. As communication networks were spreading deep into society, the need for secure communication greatly promoted cryptographic research. The need for fast but secure cryptographic systems is growing bigger. Therefore, dedicated hardware for cryptography is becoming a key issue for designers. With the spread of reconfigurable hardware such as FPGAs, hardware implementations of cryptographic algorithms became cost-effective. The focus of this book is on all aspects of cryptographic hardware and embedded systems. This includes design, implementation and security of such systems. The content of this book is divided into four main parts, each of which is organised in three chapters, with the exception of the last one.

Book excerpt: I wish to welcome all of you to the International Symposium on High Perf- mance Computing 2000 (ISHPC 2000) in the megalopolis of Tokyo. After having two great successes with ISHPC’97 (Fukuoka, November 1997) and ISHPC’99 (Kyoto, May 1999), many people have requested that the symposium would be held in the capital of Japan and we have agreed. I am very pleased to serve as Conference Chair at a time when high p- formance computing (HPC) has a signi?cant in?uence on computer science and technology. In particular, HPC has had and will continue to have a signi?cant - pact on the advanced technologies of the “IT” revolution. The many conferences and symposiums that are held on the subject around the world are an indication of the importance of this area and the interest of the research community. One of the goals of this symposium is to provide a forum for the discussion of all aspects of HPC (from system architecture to real applications) in a more informal and personal fashion. Today we are delighted to have this symposium, which includes excellent invited talks, tutorials and workshops, as well as high quality technical papers.
