Book Synopsis Force, Content and the Unity of the Proposition by : Gabriele M. Mras
Download or read book Force, Content and the Unity of the Proposition written by Gabriele M. Mras and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume advances discussion between critics and defenders of the force-content distinction and opens up new ways of thinking about force and speech acts in relation to the unity problem. The force-content dichotomy has shaped the philosophy of language and mind since the time of Frege and Russell. Isn’t it obvious that, for example, the clauses of a conditional are not asserted and must therefore be propositions and propositions the forceless contents of forceful acts? But, others have recently asked in response, how can a proposition be a truth value bearer if it is not unified through the forceful act of a subject that takes a position regarding how things are? Can we not instead think of propositions as being inherently forceful, but of force as being cancelled in certain contexts? And what do assertoric, but also directive and interrogative force indicators mean? Force, Content and the Unity of the Proposition will be of interest to researchers working in philosophy of language, philosophical logic, philosophy of mind and linguistics.
Book Synopsis Content, Consciousness, and Perception by : Conor McHugh
Download or read book Content, Consciousness, and Perception written by Conor McHugh and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-14 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What sort of thing is the mind? And how can such a thing at the same time - belong to the natural world, - represent the world, - give rise to our subjective experience, - and ground human knowledge? Content, Consciousness and Perception is an edited collection, comprising eleven new contributions to the philosophy of mind, written by some of the most promising young philosophers in the UK and Ireland. The book is arranged into three parts. Part I, “Concepts and Mental Content”, which begins with an attack by Hans-Johann Glock on the representational theory of mind, addresses the nature of mental representation. Part II, “Consciousness and the Metaphysics of Mind”, concerns the prospects for a naturalistic metaphysics of the conscious mind. Finally, Part III, entitled “Perception”, pursues the project of giving a satisfactory philosophical account of perceptual experience. The book begins with an introductory essay by the editors, which provides an overview of the state of contemporary philosophy of mind, locating the articles to follow within that context. The individual chapters of Content, Consciousness and Perception are professional contributions to their respective areas, of interest to any philosopher of mind. The volume as a whole is ideal for non-specialists and students interested in getting to grips with the state of the art in contemporary philosophy of mind.

Book Synopsis Harmful Content on the Internet and in Video Games by : Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Culture, Media and Sport Committee
Download or read book Harmful Content on the Internet and in Video Games written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Culture, Media and Sport Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Internet has become an indispensable tool for communications, research and commerce. But this report addresses the growing public concern at the Internet's dark side: the easy availability of hardcore pornography, which people may find offensive, the uploading by ordinary people of film of real fights, bullying or alleged rape, or the setting up of websites encouraging others to follow extreme diets, or self-harm, or even commit suicide. In particular, there is increasing anxiety among parents about the use of social networking sites and chatrooms for grooming and sexual predation. The Committee welcomes the Government-commissioned report by Dr Tanya Byron on the risks posed by the Internet to children, and agrees that a UK Council for Child Internet Safety should be established. Sites which host user-generated content-typically photos and videos uploaded by members of the public-have taken some steps to set minimum standards for that content. The Committee recommends that proactive review of content should be standard practice for such sites, and calls for provision of high profile facilities for reporting abuse or unwelcome behaviour directly to law enforcement and support organisations. There is a distinct issue about labelling of video games to indicate the nature of their content. Two systems currently exist side by side: the industry awards its own ratings, and the British Board of Film Classification awards classifications to a small number of games which feature content unsuitable for children. The dual system is confusing, and BBFC should have responsibility for rating games with content appropriate for adults or teenagers.
