Book excerpt: Gordon Korman’s uproarious, outrageous, and all-too-familiar summer camp adventure is BACK! Rudy Miller really isn’t into the whole camping thing. So when his parents send him to Camp Algonkian “for his own good” all he wants to do is go home. Rudy teams up with his cabin-mate Mike for a series of carefully planned — yet hilariously bungled — escape attempts. Unfortunately, their counsellor (and nemesis) Chip is as determined to keep them there as they are to get away. Rudy and Mike spend their days plotting, playing chess, and working off punishments for their failed escapes. Hmmm, maybe it isn’t such a bad way to spend the summer after all . . .

Book excerpt: The contemporary figure has somewhat similar characteristics to his father, grandfather, and great grandfather; a soul-searching thinker, all the same, departing from the ruinous while conserving the beneficial side of the culture, customs and manners in which he was raised and the larger generational dimensions embedded in it. A virtual page-turner, highly intense and graphically detailed, the saga continues to unfold. Characters readily identifiable in your own life, cheek by jowl with the hero and foe, stir and percolate the gamut of your emotions. Rooting for the one while despising the other, you’re propelled into the bowels of the narrative. Some personalities appear to be born evil and feed on the environs; others tend to virtue and progress upon it. Protagonists and antagonists are mixed and varied: some eternal optimists finding happiness even in dark periods; some risk takers in the will for clarity putting reputation on the line; some perpetually abstruse, their sad comfort zone; and the many up and down others. The Stanoli patriarch was fond of saying, “There is nothing greater than loving God and loving your neighbor,” and “I am a learner and willing to be corrected and criticized in order to become what I ought to become no matter where it comes from,” and “I make it my moral ambition to be happy around others.”

Book excerpt: - A New York Times and USA Today bestseller - Book of the Month Club 2016 Book of the Year - Second Place Goodreads Best Fiction of 2016 A beautiful and provocative love story between two unlikely people and the hard-won relationship that elevates them above the Midwestern meth lab backdrop of their lives. As the daughter of a drug dealer, Wavy knows not to trust people, not even her own parents. It's safer to keep her mouth shut and stay out of sight. Struggling to raise her little brother, Donal, eight-year-old Wavy is the only responsible adult around. Obsessed with the constellations, she finds peace in the starry night sky above the fields behind her house, until one night her star gazing causes an accident. After witnessing his motorcycle wreck, she forms an unusual friendship with one of her father's thugs, Kellen, a tattooed ex-con with a heart of gold. By the time Wavy is a teenager, her relationship with Kellen is the only tender thing in a brutal world of addicts and debauchery. When tragedy rips Wavy's family apart, a well-meaning aunt steps in, and what is beautiful to Wavy looks ugly under the scrutiny of the outside world. A powerful novel you won’t soon forget, Bryn Greenwood's All the Ugly and Wonderful Things challenges all we know and believe about love. 31 Books Bringing the Heat this Summer —Bustle Top Ten Hottest Reads of 2016 —New York Daily News Best Books of 2016 —St. Louis Post Dispatch

But as Nickers matured into a teenager, she soon discovered that her dreams would not be as easy to achieve as she once believed. In her frank memoir, she begins by detailing her turbulent adolescent years as she struggled with low self-esteem, endured a broken heart for the first time, and lost her innocence. After she is forced to face the unimaginable loss of two friends in her final year of high school, Nickers progressed from a hopeful girl to a woman who hated being alone and found herself attracted to men who did not respect her. With her destiny dictated by her choices, Nickers soon finds herself pregnant with her first child and on a rocky road lined with abusive lovers, infidelity, and utter despair. As she recalls her poignant story, it becomes evident that her innocent pursuit for unconditional love has somehow transformed into a scrappy quest for survival. Disappearing Fathers offers a heartbreaking glimpse into one woman's journey through life as she struggles to find love and raise her children.

Book excerpt: BOOK DESCRIPTION Changing Seasons traces the lives of Warren and Arleta Martin as they seek a better life for their family. After their marriage, Warren goes to work for Arletas father on his farm, but Arleta yearns for something better. The whole country is struggling through the depression, and after Mother Nature ravages the area where they live in Texas, money for work on the farm becomes scarce. Leaving his pregnant wife at home, Warren travels out of state to find a job that will pay cash, promising to be home before the baby is born. The story is told through the eyes of Mary, their oldest daughtera bright and precocious child who is the center of her Grandma Jamisons world. Mary feels secure and loved, even in a world on the brink of World War II. Then that security is snatched away when her parents decide to travel west seeking a better life for their small family. The trip to California in a crowded car with the Jefferson family is a long, tiring ride in late December of 1941, especially to three-year-old Mary who has never seen these people before. When she realizes that this is not just a ride to town, but that they are leaving her beloved Grandma Jamison, she begs to return to Texas, but her wishes fall on deaf ears. When they finally reach their destination she discovers they have moved to what she describes as a wide spot in the road, and their new house isnt much better than the one they left in Texas. Soon after arriving in California Mary is told she must learn to speak correctly, There is no such word as aint, she is told, and shes not to use southern slangwords like didja, gonna, gotta, and dozens of others. Its all very confusing, especially when she is informed that her Mama would henceforth be known as Mother. Soon more of her fathers family joins them in California, and she doesnt feel quite so lonesome. Then she reaches school age, and comes face to face with a whole new world, when she discovers that she is just a small cog in the scheme of things, and she is forever falling out of sync. Marys parents have grilled into her that she is never to get into a car with a stranger. So, when a car pulls to a stop and a lady gets out and approaches her, while she is waiting at the bus stop alone on the first day of school, Mary panics. She is sure that the lady is going to kidnap her, so she runs home, screaming all the way. Things went downhill from there. Most of Marys pretty school dresses were made of printed flour sacks, but some of the girls referred to them as rags. Once the other kids realized that she was very smart, and always got top grades, she became known as smarty-pants, teachers pet, and other names that were not so nice. Mary began to think of herself as a country mouse in comparison to other girls. Especially since her hair was a plain mousy brown without any curl, while her cousin, Olivia, and her sister, Reba, both were curly headed blonds. So Mary withdrew and turned to books and a world of make believe. However, there are happy times too. Once a month the Martins and Jeffersons go on a picnic to a local park, where the children play on the playground equipment and go for exciting boat rides. Another time they attend a war bond rally, where The Sons of the Pioneers, along with Roy Rogers and his horse, Trigger, are the main attraction. And theres the Fourth of July picnic, where one of the rockets went astray and caused all kinds of excitement. Theres also travel. One Christmas, four families of the Martin relatives caravan by automobile to Texas to spend the holidays with the rest of the family. Along the road they run into all types of excitement; rain, wind, snow, ice, flooded roads, and even a cattle drive. Finally they reach their destination, and its a whirlwind of new experiences for Mary. The cousins join in building a snowman, and then proceed to have a snowball fight. Its a rare treat, since there is no snow in
