Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ONE OF THE MOST LOVED NOVELS OF THE DECADE. A long-lost book reappears, mysteriously connecting an old man searching for his son and a girl seeking a cure for her widowed mother's loneliness. Leo Gursky taps his radiator each evening to let his upstairs neighbor know he’s still alive. But it wasn’t always like this: in the Polish village of his youth, he fell in love and wrote a book…Sixty years later and half a world away, fourteen-year-old Alma, who was named after a character in that book, undertakes an adventure to find her namesake and save her family. With virtuosic skill and soaring imaginative power, Nicole Krauss gradually draws these stories together toward a climax of "extraordinary depth and beauty" (Newsday).

Book excerpt: Love are one of those acts, a bit like Gram Parsons, who are very hip to namecheck as an influence. Their seminal album, Forever Changes, is often cited by many musicians as one of their favorites (it was #40 in Rolling Stone magazine s Top 500 albums) and the band have an aura of the Californian Turn on, tune in, drop out vibe. A hard band to pigeonhole, their music drew on many influences from rock, garage, folk and psychedelia, but they were one of the first racially diverse groups. For such an influential band, surprisingly little has been written about them. This book is a welcome addition therefore, particularly as it is penned by the band s official historian, Bruno Ceriotti. Johnny Echols' Love Revisited are still keeping the memory alive, but Ceriotti has wisely chosen to focus only up to 1971 when the original band split up. The book is in the handy timeline format with many original pictures and interviews. Ceriotti leaves no stone unturned to tell the Love story from Arthur Lee s birth in Tennessee though to his breaking up the original band in 1971. Echols contributed a foreword, as did Michael Stuart-Ware, the band s drummer from back in the day who played on Forever Changes and Da Capo.Whilst not an official biography, Arthur Lee s widow, Diane, has offered encouragement to the author as she is keen to keep her late husband s memory alive. The timing of this book couldn t be better. 2016 is the 50th anniversary of the band s debut album so interest will be high. In fact, the book will get two bites of the cherry as 2017 is the 50th anniversary of Forever Changes and all things psychedelic are likely to be in vogue with it being 50 years since the summer of love. By the way, the book's title derives from a Love song from their first album, written by Bacharach and David. The former was unimpressed with Love's version "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruno Latour has written a unique and wonderful tale of a technological dream gone wrong. The story of the birth and death of Aramis—the guided-transportation system intended for Paris—is told in this thought-provoking and fictional account by several different parties: an engineer and his professor; company executives and elected officials; a sociologist; and finally Aramis itself, who delivers a passionate plea on behalf of technological innovations that risk being abandoned by their makers. As the young engineer and professor follow Aramis’s trail—conducting interviews, analyzing documents, assessing the evidence—perspectives keep shifting: the truth is revealed as multilayered, unascertainable, comprising an array of possibilities worthy of Rashomon. This charming and profound book, part novel and part sociological study, is Latour at his thought-provoking best.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SHORTLISTED FOR THE DYLAN THOMAS PRIZE 2011 Bruno Littlemore; linguist, artist, philosopher. A life defined by a soaring mind, yet bound by a restrictive body. Born in down-town Chicago, Bruno's precocity pulls him from an unremarkable childhood, and under the tuition of Lydia, his intellect dazzles a watching world. But when falls in love with his mentor, the world turns on them with outrage: Bruno is striving to be something he is not, and denying everything that he is. For despite his all too human complexities, dreams and frailties, Bruno's hairy body, flattened nose and jutting brow are, undeniably, the features of a chimpanzee. Like its protagonist, this novel is big, abrasive, witty, perverse, earnest and accomplished. The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore goes beyond satire by showing us not what it means, but what it feels like be human - to love and lose, learn, aspire, grasp, and, in the end, to fail.

Book excerpt: Tiré du site Internet de Corraini: ""It's mother's day, it's father's day, today is spring, it's little brother's first birthday, the next-door neighbour gets married ! Every occasion is good to offer a flower. [...] But what really matters is the love with which a little daisy, a lavender sprig or some moss are chosen, that one there in particular and not that other one." (From the text) The creation of floral arrangements aims to transmit a message through a life (the plant) which is expression of silence. The one who gives and receives a flower should be able to compose and interpret this living silence, that tries to express life through another type of life. It's not meant to be a difficult or intricate purpose, but on the contrary a natural gesture which doesn't need money but love and inventiveness. Munari shows here many examples of such an inventiveness, not to be merely copied but as a suggestion to freely invent many other ones. The series "workshop", which is focused on the imagination and the active involvement of children and adults, includes now a new book."

Book excerpt: The first installment in the delightful, internationally acclaimed series featuring Chief of Police Bruno. Meet Benoît Courrèges, aka Bruno, a policeman in a small village in the South of France. He’s a former soldier who has embraced the pleasures and slow rhythms of country life. He has a gun but never wears it; he has the power to arrest but never uses it. But then the murder of an elderly North African who fought in the French army changes all that. Now Bruno must balance his beloved routines—living in his restored shepherd’s cottage, shopping at the local market, drinking wine, strolling the countryside—with a politically delicate investigation. He’s paired with a young policewoman from Paris and the two suspect anti-immigrant militants. As they learn more about the dead man’s past, Bruno’s suspicions turn toward a more complex motive. "Enjoyable.... Martin Walker plots with the same finesse with which Bruno can whip up a truffle omelette, and both have a clear appreciation for a life tied to the land." —The Christian Science Monitor "A nice literary pairing with the slow-food movement.... [It is] lovely...to linger at the table." —Entertainment Weekly "A wonderfully crafted novel as satisfying as a French pastry but with none of the guilt or calories." —Tuscon Citizen's Journal

Book excerpt: A dying man makes a request of his estranged son that brings secrets and grudges to the surface in a novel by the prize-winning author of Under the Net. With not much time left to live, Bruno makes a final request to those who care for him: He wishes to see his estranged son, Miles, once more. After decades of broken contact due to Miles marrying a woman Bruno once found unsuitable, the prodigal son returns home to his father—and finds himself confronting much more than just a dying man’s last demand. As Miles; his wife and his sister-in-law; Bruno’s son-in-law, Danby; and Bruno’s nurses and aides gather at this deathbed vigil, they will become entangled in a web of affairs, passions, and grudges that will change them all—even long after Bruno is gone. Author Iris Murdoch’s examination of “the subjects of death and love [is] beautifully articulated in the dramatic action,” making Bruno’s Dream one of the most entertaining and profound novels in the Man Booker Prize winner’s towering body of work (The New York Times).

Book excerpt: In 1988, Chef Bruno Feldeisen embarked on a search of new horizons, open spaces and new flavors, and landed in New York. That started a journey on a North American love story where he cooked alongside chefs from every walk of life, in cities as vibrant as his curiosity. In Baking with Bruno, Feldeisen begins teaching the fundamentals of making pastries, doughs and more along with the basic items found in a pastry chef's pantry as well as a list of all the tools of the trade. Baking with Bruno then proceeds to reveal extraordinary recipes for jams, sauces, cookies, mousse, custards and cakes. Recipes include: Rhubarb Compote, Chocolate and Pistachio Snaps, Halva Pecan Biscotti, Cranberry Clafouti, Flourless Almond Chocolate Cake and more. "This book of recipes documents my discovery of North American food culture in the context of my French culinary background. Going from a distinct old-world culture with very defined culinary rules to a land where anything seemed possible -- especially for newcomers -- made my exploration all the sweeter. This is my ode to that delightful journey." (Bruno Feldeisen)
