Book excerpt: It Takes A Matriarch is the second of four books about the extended Reiss and Basler families who settled on a small farm in St. Clair County, Illinois in 1834 and 1839, respectively. It includes 780 letters saved by first generation Margaret Basler Reiss Ebert from 1852 to 1888. Some letters were phonetic English but most had to be translated from old German. Authors were Margarets siblings, their spouses, her children, their spouses, her grandchildren, and two friends. They mention serving in the Civil War, personal challenges, life in St. Louis and Sacramento and Davenport, and the lost family fortune. One author was friends with John Wilkes Booth who shot President Lincoln. Quilter, Granger, Grandma, Matriarch was the first of these four books. It is the daily diary of third generation Katie Reiss covering 1949 through 1953. It was published first to give the reader a feel for life on the Reiss Family Farm in the German heritage of southern Illinois. Katie and husband George Reiss doubled the original Reiss/Basler farm to its current 360 acres. Relatives gather for a reunion in June 2009 to celebrate 175 years of the ongoing existence of the Reiss Family Farm. The Reiss Dairy will be the third book. It is a history of the Reiss Dairy in Sikeston, Missouri which was founded in 1935 by third generation John Reiss. It is famous for milk bottles featuring poems created by Sikeston citizens to promote Reiss Dairy products. The best of these bottles sell on eBay for over $200. Family, Farming, and Freedom will be the fourth book. It is 55 years of professional and personal writings by fourth generation Irv Reiss from 1949 to 2004. His favorite subjects were family fun and travel, restoring strip mined coal lands to productive farming, and promoting individual freedoms and responsibilities. He was my dad.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Book excerpt: SPOON ME will keep you up like a line of cocaine on the Queens nipple, put you down like a vomiting baby, move your sofa like a friend with a bad back, decline your invitation like it conflicted with a tour of a chocolate factory, offer you advice like your own mother after two shots of tequila, spur your advances like a date with the Pope, and make sense of all your Mustang Ranch marriage licenses like a Nevada judge. Written in gold silk from the melted remains of Egyptian gods by an eighth century mystic on the quills of an extinct peacock species and then recovered on the bottom of the ocean by a shark-bitten surfer, SPOON ME is that rare work of fiction that comes along suddenly and ends up in your bed, curled around your body, keeping you warm, snuggling and nestling against you so you feel that rare sense of perfection in the moment as it is actually happening. It is a book that whispers to you, that you can whisper to spoon me

Download or read book My Gaze Is Turned Inward written by Gertrud Kolmar and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-26 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So a picture of Gertrud Kolmar, a gifted Jewish writer struggling to sustain her art and family, emerges from these eloquent and allusive letters. Written in the stolen moments before her day as a forced laborer in a munitions factory began, the letters tell of Kolmar's move from the family home in Finkenkrug to a three-room flat in Berlin, which she and her father must soon share with other displaced Jews. They describe her factory work as a learning experience and assert, in the face of ever worsening conditions, that true art, never dependent on comfort or peace, is "capable of triumphing over . . . time and place."

Book Synopsis My Sister's Diary by : Nancy Richardson
Download or read book My Sister's Diary written by Nancy Richardson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-08-29 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Sister’s Diary is a hearttouching story of a very strong, passionate woman who endured the hardships of cerebral palsy for seventy-nine years. After Carolyn’s death, Carolyn’s sister, Nancy, read and gleaned amazing facts and feelings from Carolyn’s diaries of sixty-five years. Life started with a premature birth. School days were difficult, but Carolyn persisted in a school for the handicapped. After graduation from high school, Carolyn worked at the Sheltered Workshop in Binghamton. A later decline in her condition triggered her family to pursue a patterning program through the Institute for Human Potential. Carolyn’s improvement was remarkable. After her father’s death, Carolyn and her mother moved to Arizona to be close to family. Life was good for them until declining health took the life of her mother. After this, life for Carolyn was most difficult in Medicaid-assisted living facilities. She endured care that bordered on verbal and physical abuse. Three male aids cared deeply for Carolyn and gave her a reason to live. Carolyn felt like many abuse victims do—that she was guilty of causing the poor care. A move resulted in somewhat better care until her death in 2008.
