Book excerpt: The story of a child refugee who faced her fears, found her home and accidentally made history When she was just nine, Golriz Ghahraman and her parents were forced to flee their home in Iran. After a terrifying and uncertain journey, they landed in Auckland where they were able to seek asylum and - ultimately - create a new life. In this open and intimate account, Ghahraman talks about making a home in Aotearoa New Zealand, her work as a human rights lawyer, her United Nations missions, and how she became the first refugee to be elected to the New Zealand Parliament. Passionate and unflinching, Know Your Place is a story about breaking barriers, and the daily challenges of prejudice that shape the lives of women and minorities. At its heart, it's about overcoming fear, about family, and about finding a place to belong.

So I decided to tell Deborah's and few other ladies' story. The other story is about a young lady that grew in the church but sort of lost her way. Book excerpt: Abstract Musings is a collection of poetical verse where honest feelings are unveiled as disclosed from the imagination of the author. Inspiring works are, offered, inviting open-mindedness as repetitive messages, flow, exposing truth of life where not all is pure and wonderful. Very often rhythmic words combine to form haunting images, revealing belief that everything is mystically possible, yet, sometimes horribly insufferable. Much of this poetry reflects ideals inciting fate as reality on a journey through designated vistas. Many show that, moments of fear obliterate hope, telling we must offer heart-felt prayers to GOD asking to, be shown a new path to our destined eternity. Throughout this book faith is, revealed as uppermost always, testifying to our Creator's power over HIS scientific domain. Existence and illusion intertwined invariably by love or loss are recurring themes explored intuitively in, these writings. Two of Judith's newest poems, "Castles of Sand" and "Crystal Beaches", are examples of the author's passionate cries voicing inequality for mankind, with greed totally violating harmonious guardianship of our Earth. They were, penned mid 2010 after the devastation caused to the world by corrupt governments, big banks, and big corporations (particularly BP) was, realized. Abstract Musings correlates social and moral conscience, deigned through thought and vision by a questing soul, displayed lyrically within the pages of this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brian Daldorph first entered the Douglas County Jail classroom in Lawrence, Kansas, to teach a writing class on Christmas Eve 2001. His last class at the jail for the foreseeable future was mid-March 2020, right before the COVID-19 lockdown; the virus is taking a heavy toll in confined communities like nursing homes and prisons. Words Is a Powerful Thing is Daldorph’s record of teaching at the jail for the two decades between 2001 and 2020, showing how the lives of everyone involved in the class—but especially the inmates who came to class week after week—benefited from what happened every Thursday afternoon in that jail classroom, where for two hours inmates and instructor became a circle of ink and blood, writing together, reciting their poems, telling stories, and having a few good laughs. Words Is a Powerful Thing brings into the light the works of fifty talented inmate writers whose work deserves attention. Their poetry speaks of “what really matters” to all of us and gives the reader sustained insight into the role that creativity plays in aiding survival and bringing positive change for inmates, and, in turn, for all of us. Daldorph’s account of his teaching experience not only takes the reader inside the daily life at a county jail but also sets the work done in the writing class within the larger context of inmate education is the US corrections system, where education is often one of the few lifelines available to inmates. Words Is a Powerful Thing provides a teaching guide for instructors working with incarcerated writers, offering an extensive examination of both the challenges and benefits. When Brian Daldorph decided the story of his classroom experiences and the great writing produced by the inmates deserved to be told to wider audiences, he struggled with how to bring it all together. Not long after, an inmate wrote a poem titled “Words Is a Powerful Thing,” offering Daldorph a title, concept, and purpose: to show that the poetry of inmates speaks not just to other inmates but to all of us.

No subject can be said to be exhausted, but the book is perhaps large enough.
