Book Synopsis A Van Beuren Production by : Hal Erickson
Download or read book A Van Beuren Production written by Hal Erickson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prolific American film producer Amedee J. Van Beuren (1879-1938) did not start out in the film industry. After a decade spent in business and advertising, Van Beuren turned his intellect and creativity towards acquiring a foothold in film and began building his empire. He is best known to animation fans for his bizarre cartoons of the 1920s and 1930s, featuring such zanies as Molly Moo Cow, Cubby Bear and Tom and Jerry (not the cat-and-mouse duo). But the majority of the 1,499 films produced by Van Beuren between 1918 and 1937 were live-action short subjects--travelogues, comedies, musicals, sports reels and more. His roster of star performers included Bert Lahr, Shemp Howard, Ethel Waters and (indirectly) Charlie Chaplin. Van Beuren also made several feature films starring legendary big-game hunter Frank Buck, and a 12-episode serial headlining horror icon Lon Chaney, Jr. Capped by a complete list of his films, this engrossing chronicle of Amedee Van Beuren's vast output is the first all-inclusive history of one of moviedom's most successful and least-known filmmakers.
Book Synopsis The Mother's Manual by : Audrye S. Arbe

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who am I and where do I come to write this book? I feel it necessary to address all aspects of motherhood, so I decided to include both the sweetness and delight plus the shadow side of motherhood in this book. Some challenging life situations occur that are vital for us to consider, so I am including some disquieting statistics. Because many women (and men) have refrained from checking within themselves or making an examination on emotional, mental, physical and spiritual planes about having children, hardships have been created, both personally and planetary.

Book Synopsis The Hunter, the Stag, and the Mother of Animals by : Esther Jacobson-Tepfer
Download or read book The Hunter, the Stag, and the Mother of Animals written by Esther Jacobson-Tepfer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-08 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient landscape of North Asia gave rise to a mythic narrative of birth, death, and transformation that reflected the hardship of life for ancient nomadic hunters and herders. Of the central protagonists, we tend to privilege the hero hunter of the Bronze Age and his re-incarnation as a warrior in the Iron Age. But before him and, in a sense, behind him was a female power, half animal, half human. From her came permission to hunt the animals of the taiga, and by her they were replenished. She was, in other words, the source of the hunter's success. The stag was a latecomer to this tale, a complex symbol of death and transformation embedded in what ultimately became a struggle for priority between animal mother and hero hunter. From this region there are no written texts to illuminate prehistory, and the hundreds of burials across the steppe reveal little relating to myth and belief before the late Bronze Age. What they do tell us is that peoples and cultures came and went, leaving behind huge stone mounds, altars, and standing stones as well as thousands of petroglyphic images. With The Hunter, the Stag, and the Mother of Animals, Esther Jacobson-Tepfer uses that material to reconstruct the prehistory of myth and belief in ancient North Asia. Her narrative places monuments and imagery within the context of the physical landscape and by considering all three elements as reflections of the archaeology of belief. Within that process, paleoenvironmental forces, economic innovations, and changing social order served as pivots of mythic transformation. With this vividly illustrated study, Jacobson-Tepfer brings together for this first time in any language Russian and Mongolian archaeology with prehistoric representational traditions of South Siberia and Mongolia in order to explore the non-material aspects of these fascinating prehistoric cultures.

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Women and Monarchy in the Ancient Mediterranean World written by Elizabeth D. Carney and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers the first comprehensive look at the role of women in the monarchies of the ancient Mediterranean. It consistently addresses certain issues across all dynasties: title; role in succession; the situation of mothers, wives, and daughters of kings; regnant and co-regnant women; role in cult and in dynastic image; and examines a sampling of the careers of individual women while placing them within broader contexts. Written by an international group of experts, this collection is based on the assumption that women played a fundamental role in ancient monarchy, that they were part of, not apart from it, and that it is necessary to understand their role to understand ancient monarchies. This is a crucial resource for anyone interested in the role of women in antiquity.
Book Synopsis Salt & Light; The Complete Jesus by : Jonathan Geoffrey Dean
Download or read book Salt & Light; The Complete Jesus written by Jonathan Geoffrey Dean and published by Jonathan Dean. This book was released on 2022-07-10 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did Jesus do? What did Jesus say? Who was Jesus? Salt & Light; The Complete Jesus is the highly acclaimed and award-winning definitive statement concerning Jesus of Nazareth, history's most compelling figure. The single most important book about the Historical Jesus in the last 30 years, more comprehensive than Josh McDowell’s Evidence That Demands a Verdict and more powerful than C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity. However, even today, there is still general confusion surrounding Jesus: Was (Is) Jesus God? Did Jesus even exist? Did he rise from the dead? What are we to make of the miracles? Is he Peter's Jesus or Paul's Christ? Or both? Is there evidence for Jesus outside the Bible? Should we still believe? If so, believe what? What does ALL the evidence point to? Salt & Light does not shy away from addressing these and other tough questions. For the first time ever, after years of research using the complete body of early Christian literature and recent modern scholarship, including new and exciting discoveries in many areas such as early manuscripts, science, New Testament studies, archaeology, and history, the real Jesus emerges. Dean offers an eminently readable yet powerful portrait of the authentic Jesus full of astonishing facts for both believers and sceptics alike. So come along for an utterly fascinating journey and meet the historical Jesus, learn about his mission, and discover his teaching! Book Synopsis A More Beautiful Question by : Warren Berger
Download or read book A More Beautiful Question written by Warren Berger and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To get the best answer-in business, in life-you have to ask the best possible question. Innovation expert Warren Berger shows that ability is both an art and a science. It may be the most underappreciated tool at our disposal, one we learn to use well in infancy-and then abandon as we grow older. Critical to learning, innovation, success, even to happiness-yet often discouraged in our schools and workplaces-it can unlock new business opportunities and reinvent industries, spark creative insights at many levels, and provide a transformative new outlook on life. It is the ability to question-and to do so deeply, imaginatively, and “beautifully.” In this fascinating exploration of the surprising power of questioning, innovation expert Warren Berger reveals that powerhouse businesses like Google, Nike, and Netflix, as well as hot Silicon Valley startups like Pandora and Airbnb, are fueled by the ability to ask fundamental, game-changing questions. But Berger also shares human stories of people using questioning to solve everyday problems-from “How can I adapt my career in a time of constant change?” to “How can I step back from the daily rush and figure out what really makes me happy?” By showing how to approach questioning with an open, curious mind and a willingness to work through a series of “Why,” “What if,” and “How” queries, Berger offers an inspiring framework of how we can all arrive at better solutions, fresh possibilities, and greater success in business and life.
