Download or read book I Will Survive written by Gloria Gaynor and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Will Survive is the story of Gloria Gaynor, America's "Queen of Disco." It is the story of riches and fame, despair, and finally salvation. Her meteoric rise to stardom in the mid-1970s was nothing short of phenomenal, and hits poured forth that pushed her to the top of the charts, including "Honey Bee," "I Got You Under My Skin," "Never Can Say Goodbye," and the song that has immortalized her, "I Will Survive," which became a #1 international gold seller. With that song, Gloria heralded the international rise of disco that became synonymous with a way of life in the fast lane - the sweaty bodies at Studio 54, the lines of cocaine, the indescribable feeling that you could always be at the top of your game and never come down. But down she came after her early stardom, and problems followed in the wake, including the death of her mother, whose love had anchored the young singer, as well as constant battles with weight, drugs, and alcohol. While her fans always imagined her to be rich, her personal finances collapsed due to poor management; and while many envied her, she felt completely empty inside. In the early 1980s, sustained by her marriage to music publisher Linwood Simon, Gloria took three years off and reflected upon her life. She visited churches and revisited her mother's old Bible. Discovering the world of gospel, she made a commitment to Christ that sustains her to this day.

Download or read book I'm Gonna Say It Now written by Phil Ochs and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phil Ochs is known primarily as a songwriter; however, his oeuvre extends far beyond that—to short stories, poetry, criticism, journalism, and satire, all of which are included in I'm Gonna Say It Now: The Writings of Phil Ochs, which represents the majority of what Ochs wrote outside of his large circle of songs. This comprehensive tome presents another side of the famous topical songwriter, showcasing his prose and poetry from across the full span of his life. From prizewinning stories and clear-eyed reporting while a journalism major in college to music criticism, satires, and political pieces written while part of the burgeoning folk scene of New York City in the early 1960s and during the tumultuous Vietnam War era; from sharp and lyrical poems (many previously unpublished) to reviews, features, and satires written while living in Los Angeles and the final, elegiac coda writings from near the end of his life—I’m Gonna Say It Now presents the complete picture. The book includes many rare or nearly impossible to find Ochs pieces, as well as previously unpublished works sourced from the unique holdings in the Ochs Archives at the Woody Guthrie Center. Additionally, never-before-seen reproductions from Ochs’s journals, notebooks, and manuscripts provide a closer look at the hand of the artist, giving a deeper context and understanding to his writings. Never before published photographs of Ochs bestow the visual cherry on top.

Book Synopsis Hollywood Highbrow by : Shyon Baumann
Download or read book Hollywood Highbrow written by Shyon Baumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

Download or read book No Such Thing As Forever written by and published by Red Planet. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Never Ending Tour is the popular name for Bob Dylan's endless touring schedule. During the course of the tour, musicians have come and gone as the band continued to evolve. The shows amassed a huge fan base with some fans traveling from around the world to attend as many Dylan shows as possible. Dylan played his 2,000th show of the Never Ending Tour in October 2007 and his 3,000th show of the Never Ending Tour in April 2019, in Innsbruck, Austria (featured in the book). Dylan has attributed much of the versatility of his live shows to the talent of his backing band, with whom he recorded each of his 21st Century studio albums. The tour's name was cemented when a journalist asked Dylan if it was a never ending tour which Dylan affirmed. Since then he has tried to pay down the tag saying in a recent, 'Critics should know there is no such thing as forever'.
Download or read book Our Path to Safety written by Jason Wells and published by Dtac Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if there was a way to identify a threat to a school, a business or a community before it happened? What attackers who target innocent people have in common is not their psychological conditions nor their social upbringing, but rather their behavioral actions prior to their violence. These behaviors have been studied at length for years, and are now available to the public. Former U.S. Secret Service Agent Jason Wells outlines these behavioral conditions, which have been used by the federal government for decades to protect leaders of the world, to include the President of the United States. With this guide, members of the community can learn what kinds of behaviors should be of concern, and how society can act in a safe and proactive manner to address them. With analysis into behavioral indicators and real-world examples in the stories of some of the most prolific attackers in U.S. history, Jason Wells sets out to empower the reader to understand that it is the national community who will protect itself from future acts of active shooter attacks, domestic terrorism, and random violence in our country. Our Path To Safety is filled with compelling true stories, gripping analysis and outlined solutions to addressing violence through behavioral interventions and positive action.
