Download or read book Definiteness written by Christopher Lyons and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-03-13 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1999 textbook investigates definiteness both from a comparative and a theoretical point of view, showing how languages express definiteness and what definiteness is. It surveys a large number of languages to discover the range of variation in relation to definiteness and related grammatical phenomena, such as demonstratives, possessives and personal pronouns. It outlines work done on the nature of definiteness in semantics, pragmatics and syntax, and develops an account on which definiteness is a grammatical category represented in syntax as a functional head (the widely discussed D). Consideration is also given to the origins and evolution of definite articles in the light of the comparative and theoretical findings. Among the claims advanced are that definiteness does not occur in all languages, though the pragmatic concept which it grammaticalizes probably does.

Book Synopsis The Albanian Orthodox Church by : Ardit Bido
Download or read book The Albanian Orthodox Church written by Ardit Bido and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion in Albania has had a complicated history, with Orthodoxy, Bektashi and Sunni Islam, Catholicism coexisting throughout much of the history of this Balkan nation. This book traces the rise of the Albanian Orthodox Church from the beginnings of Albanian nationalist movements in the late nineteenth century until the end of the Second World War and the Communist takeover. It examines the struggles of the Albanian state and Church to establish the Church’s independence from foreign influence amid a complex geopolitical interplay between Albania, neighbouring Greece and its powerful Ecumenical Patriarchate; the Italian and Yugoslav interference, and the shifting international political circumstances. The book argues that Greece’s involvement in the Albanian "ecclesiastical issue" was primarily motivated by political and territorial aspirations, as Athens sought to undermine the newly established Albanian state by controlling its Orthodox Church through pro-Greek bishops appointed by the Patriarchate. With its independence finally recognized in 1937, the Albanian Orthodox Church soon faced new challenges with the Italian, and later German, occupation of the country during the Second World War: the Church’s expansion into Kosovo, the Italian effort to place the Church under papal authority, and, the ultimate threat, the imminent victory of Communist forces.

Book Synopsis The Space of Memory by : Barbara Gabriella Renzi
Download or read book The Space of Memory written by Barbara Gabriella Renzi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In 2000, two linguistic endangerment experts, Nettle and Romaine, estimated that among the world’s 6000 languages, only about 600 could be considered safe today. Arbëresh, the language that Barbara Renzi and Elsa Musacchio present to the readers in this volume, is one of those languages in danger of dying, recognized as such in UNESCO’s Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger (2010). The great value of this volume is not limited to the preservation and analysis of cultural heritage through the tales, stories and songs included in it, but also in recording the authentic sound of the Arbëresh language that comes to life in Elsa’s voice as she reads the collected material on a special CD. The availability of this authentic voice to future generations of younger speakers of Arbëresh makes the volume a practical linguistic and cultural tool. And the best service we can pay to courageous works like this is to bring them to young speakers in their schools, without which Arbëresh and other endangered languages have a very small chance of survival.” – Eda Derhemi (PhD), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
